Episode 9: Madoka Magica And Earth's Mightiest Heroes by Geekdown Podcast

>>PROGRAMMING NOTE: The Game of Thrones discussion this episode gets a little spoilery about S5, so if you’re not caught up, skip from 09:30 to 24:00.<<

A break in format this week as Caitlin and Jordan take a moment to see what’s current in the world of geeky pop culture. With a Flash crossover set to air on March 28, the duo check in on CBS’s new Supergirl series. How’d that go? Not great, to be honest. But we do it for you.

Also in this episode: Daredevil is here, Game of Thrones is coming, The Little Prince is saved, a surprising appearance from Adam Warlock and an appreciation of Gillen and McKelvie’s Phonogram.

After a brief moment to address some personal business between them, Caitlin and Jordan settle in to the task at hand. This week Jordan checks out the cult and darkly comic British superhero drama Misfits and Caitlin dives into dreams with Satoshi Kon’s film Paprika.

Will Jordan finally connect with a UK TV show if it’s about superheroes? Will Caitlin find the layered mindbending of Kon’s final work enthralling or frustrating? Answers await you.

Also in this episode: Civil War gets more plot (and a lot more running time), The Little Prince gets passed over, Ta-Nehisi Coates and T'Challa team up, and Caitlin’s love affair with Ryan Reynolds continues apace.

We’re all about synergy on Geekdown this week, as Caitlin looks at the legendary 90’s baroque shoujo anime Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Jordan takes a look at new animated classic Steven Universe.

Will Caitlin conquer the deliberately incomprehensible Utena? Can Jordan push through the fandom baggage that comes with SU and reach the show’s sweet center? We shall see.

Also this week: the #majdisp of Crouching Tiger: Sword of Destiny, JoGo exits Sandman, Ghostbusters leaves one of us unimpressed, and the alarming ubiquity of David Bowie’s wang.

This week on Geekdown, Jordan spends time with the seminal Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg comedy series “Spaced” while Caitlin takes a spin along the Brazilian coastline with the instant classic anime Michiko & Hatchin.

Can Daisy and Tim sweeten Jordan’s surly attitude to British comedy? Will Michio Malandro capture Caitlin’s heart, throw it on the back of her scooter and ride away with it into the South American horizon? Only one way to know for sure.

Also: Marvel steals our ideas, Vixen takes one small step for black female superheroes, J-Horror trash, the problem of Danny Rand, and updates on Food Wars and Young Justice. Plus our usual squabbling and banter.

The stakes are high this week as Caitlin unloads one of her all time favourites for Jordan to check out, superhero teen action/drama Young Justice. Jordan continues his quest to find an anime that Caitlin will love as much as he does, bringing her the existentialist suspense of Death Parade.

Also this week: Daredevil and Crouching Tiger tease us, Stan the Man says farewell to Canada, Eric Stephenson unloads the hot take cannon, one of us saw Deadpool and the return of Jordan’s tirade voice. #supeshap

Welcome to Geekdown, where every week longtime friends and geeks Jordan Ferguson and Caitlin MacKinnon each bring in something they like to see if the other will like it as much, in an attempt to find the sweet spots where fandoms intersect.

The inaugural episode swings big, with Jordan taking on Marvel’s Agent Carter and Caitlin spending time with breakout anime hit One Punch Man. Will Peggy Carter’s plucky charm win over the typically surly Jordan? Will Caitlin find anything to love in the breakneck action and shonen satire of OPM? We shall see.

Also appearing: cosplaying figure skaters, American Gods casting reactions, comic reboots no one asked for and Caitlin attempting to stay awake through two minutes of pro wrestling talk.

Welcome back to Geekdown, the show where longtime friends and nerds Caitlin MacKinnon and Jordan Ferguson continue their unending search for the sweet spots where fandoms intersect.

This week, Caitlin checks out last year’s reboot of the Archie franchise and Jordan looks at cult British comedy series The Mighty Boosh. Can Caitlin stomach the soapy teen drama of Riverdale 2k16? Can the Boosh break Jordan’s longstanding aversion to British comedy? Only one way to find out.

Also appearing: a change of venue, Deadpool excitement, the DCU’s pants problem and the first appearance of “Jordan’s Tirade Voice.”

For the record, we don’t really think Rob Liefeld is a horrible human being.

Welcome back to Geekdown, where two nerds who like very different things try to find the sweet spots where their fandoms intersect.

After enduring subzero pandemonium and almost splitting up, Jordan and Caitlin get down to business, talking about the intergalactic dystopian women’s prison grindhouse spectacular Bitch Planet and the all-you-can-eat fan service buffet known as Food Wars.

Also on this episode: Jughead’s asexual, Deadpool’s king, Daniel Bryan’s retired and Caitlin really, really hates Shadowhunters.

This episode also marks the first appearance of Jordan’s current alpha and omega. His Ur-Fandom, if you will.
