  • September 26, 2006 CHEM 1314 Lecture
In this lecture we discussed double replacement reactions. We did a quick review of the synthesis and combustion reactions. We also discussed the solubility table and looked at the conductivity data that everyone had generated in the PLE for the class.

In today's class we reviewed acid-base titration curves within the context of the different types of acid-base systems that occurred at important point on the titration curve. We next discussed an example of a weak acid strong base titration by calculating the pH of the solution at several key points on the titration curve. Following that discussion we started discussing buffers and how to look at a buffer as a common ion system, and we discussed how an acid and a base would react with a buffer.

In today's class we reviewed the different types of solutions that we have discussed. We next did a common ion calculation. Then we discussed neutralization reactions and how to calculate the equilibrium constant. Neutralization reactions have large equilibrium constants so they alway go to completion. Now we are ready to tackle titration problems. We discussed the titration of a strong acid and a strong base. We did several type of calculation.

In today's class we discussed the Arrhenius definition of an acid and base and the Bronsted-Lowry definition of an acid and a base. We discussed conjugate acid/base pairs and how to identify BL acids and bases in a chemical equation. We discussed HCl as an example of a strong acid and how to calculate the pH of a solution of a specific concentration (of a strong acid) and we calculate the magnitude of the equilibrium constant for a weak acid given the initial concentration of the weak acid and the pH of the solution.

  • Lecture February 3, 2009
In today's class we began discussing the types of solid and then we looked at simple cubic. We discussed the relationship between edge length and atomic radius and we did a sample problem using simple cubic cells.

  • Lecture February 19, 2009
In today's class we discussed colligative properties including vapor pressure lowering, freezing point depression and boiling point elevation. We discussed the colligative properties in terms free energy changes and entropy changes.

In this lecture we introduced the concept of a formula. We discussed percent composition and how to determine the empirical formula a variety of ways. We also talked about the molecular formula and how to use the molecular mass to determine the molecular formula.
