General Chemistry Spring 2009 episodes

  • Lecture March 24, 2009
In today's class we discussed the Arrhenius definition of an acid and base and the Bronsted-Lowry definition of an acid and a base. We discussed conjugate acid/base pairs and how to identify BL acids and bases in a chemical equation. We discussed HCl as an example of a strong acid and how to calculate the pH of a solution of a specific concentration (of a strong acid) and we calculate the magnitude of the equilibrium constant for a weak acid given the initial concentration of the weak acid and the pH of the solution.

  • Lecture March 10, 2009
In today's class we discussed temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant, and the relationship of free energy and the equilibrium constant. We then started discussing acids and bases, specifically the Arrhenius definition of an acid and base.

  • Lecture March 5, 2009
In today's class we discuss Le Chatelier's Principle. We covered the effects of changing concentration, pressure and temperature on a reaction at equilibrium. At the end of class we began discussing the quantitative effect of changing temperature on a reaction at equilibrium..

In today's class we continued our discussion on the concept of chemical equilibrium. We explored a chemical reaction by perrforming a number of experiments beginning with different initial amounts of reactants and predicting the ending amounts. After collecting data we discussed the idea of the equilibrium constant, and the equilibrium constant expression. We worked on several types of problems to understand the nature of the equilibrium expression and how to use an ICE Table to organize all of the information we needed to track for equilibrium reactions.

  • Lecture February 24, 2009
In today's class we began our discussion on the concept of chemical equilibrium. We started by watching and discussing some video of a macroscopic equilibrium reaction. We then looked at an equilibrium reaction at the particulate level to better understand reversibility.

  • Lecture February 19, 2009
In today's class we discussed colligative properties including vapor pressure lowering, freezing point depression and boiling point elevation. We discussed the colligative properties in terms free energy changes and entropy changes.

  • Lecture February 17, 2009
In today's class we discussed the concentration terms weight% mol fraction, molarity and molality and did several sample problems. Near the end of class we began a discussion of colligative properties.

  • Lecture February 5, 2009
In today's class we continued discussing the face-centered cubic and body centered cubic. We discussed the relationship between edge length and atomic radius for both of these systems and we did several sample problems. We also discussed ionic compounds and looked at how holes can accommodate ions.
