General information about the ZKM

Within the framework of contract research, the ZKM | Institute for Media, Education and Economics is dedicated to the analysis of economic and social processes put in motion by the increased use of the new media, as well as subsequent consultancy of public institutions and private business. The knowledge thus acquired represents an important basis for one’s own developments in media technology. One of the institute’s focal points respecting content and method in previous years has been the exploration of socio-political potential, especially in the context of television and the Internet. The objective is to include all social groupings and classes into a process of ongoing education.

Das ZKM | Institut für Medien, Bildung und Wirtschaft widmet sich im Rahmen von Auftragsforschung der Untersuchung wirtschaftlicher und sozialer Prozesse, welche durch die verstärkte Nutzung der Neuen Medien in Gang gesetzt wurden sowie der nachfolgenden Beratung öffentlicher Institutionen und privater Unternehmen. Die dabei gewonnenen Kenntnisse stellen eine wichtige Basis für eigene medientechnologische Entwicklungen dar. Ein inhaltlicher und methodischer Schwerpunkt der Forschungsarbeit des Instituts bestand in den zurückliegenden Jahren darin, gesellschaftspolitische Potentiale insbesondere im Kontext des Fernsehens und des Internets zu erschließen. Ziel ist die Inklusion möglichst aller Bevölkerungsgruppen in einen permanenten Bildungsprozess.

In worldwide comparison, the ZKM | Center for Art and Media is a unique culture institution. It unites under one roof production and research, exhibitions and events, mediation and documentation. Each of the departments – the Media Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Institute for Visual Media, the Institute for Music and Acoustics and the Institute for Media, Education and Economics – examines the new media in theory and practice, tests the potential of these media with their own developments, presents possible applications and reflects on the design of information society. The ZKM offers its visitors space to participate in the form of events and guided tours, to view the public collections as well as visit the media library.

Das ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie ist eine weltweit einzigartige Kulturinstitution. Sie vereint Produktion und Forschung, Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen, Vermittlung und Dokumentation. In den einzelnen Abteilungen Museum für Neue Kunst, Medienmuseum, Institut für Bildmedien, Institut für Musik und Akustik und Institut für Medien, Bildung und Wirtschaft setzt man sich in Theorie und Praxis mit den neuen Medien auseinander, erprobt mit Eigenentwicklungen ihr Potential, stellt mögliche Nutzungen exemplarisch vor und reflektiert die Gestaltung der Informationsgesellschaft. Das ZKM bietet den Besuchern Raum zur Teilnahme an Veranstaltungen und Führungen, dem Besuch der öffentlichen Sammlungen sowie der Mediathek.

The ZKM | Media Library's exhaustive collection consists of several kinds of information media.

Visitors find books, video tapes, CD-ROMs and sound carriers related to 20th and 21st century art. The inventory can be researched with the help of the Virtual catalogue film by KOBV. There the collections of other film libraries are listed too.

A server based system provides access to the video collection and the audio CDs. The media library is a reference library, books and other media can only be used on site. The publications of the ZKM and the Hochschule für Gestaltung (State School of Design) make part of the Media Library's stock too.

The ZKM | Media Library participates in the Network of Multimedia Resource Centres, which links more than 60 important archives, libraries, document centres, museums and research facilities in various locations. The aims are to secure, preserve, develop and make available audiovisual media and materials as an important cultural resource for the interested public.

Die ZKM | Mediathek vereint in ihrer umfassenden Sammlung verschiedene Informationsmedien.

Der interessierte Besucher findet im Bestand Bücher, Videos, CD-Roms und Tonträger zur Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Im Virtuellen Katalog Film des KOBV können alle Bestände über Internet recherchiert werden. Darüberhinaus finden Sie dort auch die Bestände weiterer Filmbibliotheken.

Die Videosammlung und Audio-CDs stehen direkt über ein serverbasiertes System zum Sichten und Hören bereit. Die ZKM_Mediathek hat einen Präsenzbestand, Bücher und andere Medien können nur vor Ort genutzt werden. Zum Bestand der Mediathek gehören auch die Publikationen des ZKM und der Hochschule für Gestaltung.

Die ZKM | Mediathek beteiligt sich am Netzwerk Mediatheken, zu dem sich bisher über 60 bedeutende Archive, Bibliotheken, Dokumentationsstellen, Forschungseinrichtungen und Museen zusammengeschlossen haben. Ziele sind die Sicherung, Bewahrung, Erschließung und Bereitstellung audiovisueller Quellen und Materialien als bedeutendes Kulturgut für die interessierte Öffentlichkeit.
