As we wind down the year, we pick out some of the biggest sporting stories to happen in 2022. We explore sports-washing in these modern times in conjunction with Qatar WC 2022, go into the nitty-gritty of what goes behind taking up the post of Youth & Sports minister & wrap up with a story on the iconic Stadium Shah Alam.
Preeta Samarasan's second novel is set in Malaysia post May 13, 1969, where a group of people settle down in a secluded mansion in Cameron Highlands, eschewing labels of race and religion, and hoping to remain apart from the country's changing political climate with its increasing religious polarisation. Things take a turn, however, when they are joined by Salmah, a Malay Muslim woman. We speak with Preeta about the complexities of depicting these fraught realities, and how she captured a particularly Malaysian sound with her prose. We close off by reviewing Tale of the Dreamer's Son.
Inspired by historical photographs from the 1860s of an enslaved man's heavily scourged back, thereby providing evidence of the cruelty of American slavery, Emancipation tells the story of Peter (played by Will Smith), who flees a plantation in Louisiana. Inescapably, the film is also Smith's first release since the infamous slap at the 2022 Oscars. We review the movie and talk about Smith's performance.
Newly-minted Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa is hoping to fine-tune the Generational End Game Bill before the Dewan Rakyat sits for the first time next year. We revisit an interview with Dr Kelvin Yii, who was part of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee looking at the bill, to see what the concerns were at the time. Then, we check in with a public health specialist to explore what kind of finessing is needed to make the bill effective.

Oral cancer is one of the most treatable cancers if it’s detected and treated early. But with its signs and symptoms easily mistaken for other conditions how can we improve diagnosis of oral cancer? What if I told you that we have an app for that? To share more about the MeMoSA app and how it will be tested in the community setting, we are joined by Prof Dr Cheong Sok Ching, deputy chief scientific officer with Cancer Research Malaysia.

Many of us have probably experienced the wonderfully magical feeling called ‘love’ at one point or another in our lives, either romantically or otherwise. But what exactly is love? How do we put that feeling into words?

In the past week, distressing reports have once again emerged of Rohingya refugees left stranded on a boat out at sea. Unfortunately in Southeast Asia, it’s something that’s happened again and again, often with countries in the region pushing the responsibility to each other, and in many cases with refugees - adults and children - dying at sea. To shed some light on what’s happening now as well as the larger issue of how we address humanitarian crises such as this, we’re joined by Lilianne Fan, Chair of the Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network’s Rohingya Working Group. Lilianne is also the co-founder and international director of the Geutanyoe Foundation which works with refugees and marginalised groups.
