On this special edition of Generation Justice, we’ll dive into a lecture given by Dr. Safiya Noble, an assistant professor at the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Noble, spoke at the University of New Mexico, where she discussed her research on algorithmic biases of racism and sexism commonly found on commercial search engines like Google.

Dr. Noble has taught in the school of Education at UCLA, and is a co-founder of the Information Ethics & Equity Institute.

In this Mother's Day program youth producers share their messages of love and gratitude to the mothers and mother figures in their lives. Listen in to these honest and heartfelt words of love.

This week, Generation Justice celebrates Indigenous peoples by discussing Native advancement. We speak with Warren Montoya, executive director of Rezilience, who will tell us about the upcoming “RezArtx” event here in Albuquerque. Then, Dr. Shawn Secatero, an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico College of Education, talks with us about the importance of Indigenous learning models. Generation Justice is a multimedia project that trains young journalists to harness the power of media for social change. In this segment, Media Justice Intern, Kenia Alonzo, interviews Erin Shields of the Center for Media Justice in November of 2017.

This week, Generation Justice youth producers look at interconnected issues within our community. First, we speak with Luis Leyva, Communications Fellow for the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, who shares about resources and events for immigrants in our community. Then we'll revisit an interview with poet and GJ member, Ludella Awad, a Syrian-American journalism student who published two books of poetry on the Syrian refugee experience. Finally, Riazullah Alikozai, youth producer and organizer, gives a commentary about the ongoing movement against gun violence.

This month, we experience the power of youth organizing. All over the country, students walked out of class to stand in solidarity with gun violence victims. The March for Our Lives gathered people in more than eight hundred cities across the country. Albuquerque joined the “March for Our Lives” National movement and youth from around the city organized for 3 weeks to bring out 10,000 people. It was one of the largest actions in state history.

This week, we are honored to bring you some of the organizers and speakers from the march. We are joined by Quincy Walker, Janelle Astorga Ramos, Riazullah Alkozai, and Amaia Biewen. We’ll also hear some powerful poetry from youth poet, Sarita Sol Gonzalez!

On this special edition of Generation Justice, we offer three perspectives on race, media and the 50th anniversary of the Kerner Commission Report.The National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders, or The Kerner Commission, was established by President Lyndon Johnson to investigate the causes of social unrest after an especially violent 5 days in the summer of 1967. We speak to Fred Harris, former U.S. Senator for Oklahoma, and published author, who served on and is the last remaining member of the commission. We are also joined by, Janine Jackson, Program Director of FAIR the Media Watch group, and co-producer and host of FAIR’s syndicated radio show Counterspin. And we'll hear from Joseph Torres, Senior Director of Strategy & Engagement for Free Press and co-author of the New York Times Bestseller, "News for all the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media." This program was produced in partnership with the Media Makers of Color Alliance who uplift the stories necessary to shift the narrative of people of color in the media. We bring you a special edition of Generation Justice as we reflect on this fact: mass shootings and especially school shootings are increasing. We hear the powerful speech given by 18 year old Emma Gonzalez, a Parkland student survivor who became an activist calling for gun laws to be changed. Then we bring our own New Mexico youth to the airwaves as we hear their reactions to gun violence in schools. And we have special music created for the Parkland student by artist, Phoebe Rose, a high school student in New York City.

The 2018 legislative session closed. This week, we take a look at what was accomplished and what bills are sitting before the Governor. We speak with Jessica Lopez Collins and Lan Sena of Strong Families New Mexico, a program of Forward Together. We also hear from Jessa Cowdrey, the Public Policy Director of CHI St. Joseph’s Children, for an analysis of HR 1, a resolution that would allow New Mexicans to vote on the use of the Land Trust Fund for Early Childhood Education.
