The 5th Commandment, to honor our fathers and mothers, comes with a promise of long life. But honor wears many different faces as we move from childhood to adulthood!

In the 4th Commandment regarding the Sabbath, God continues to teach his people how to be human beings again instead of machines. Your value does not come from the work you do, but from the work God already did for you.

As human beings we are torn between this love of God’s Kingdom and a love for the trappings of the carnal world. One way God helps us grow in our relationship with Him is through tests and trials of our faith.

God commands us not to take His name in vain. But is there more to this issue than not saying “OMG!” on facebook? Hint: yes.

We grow up struggling against what the world says we are, defined and valued only by what we do. But Scripture paints a different picture of us than the one we often paint for ourselves. It is filled with God’s deep love for us and continual reminders of the worth He sees in us.

We’re continuing our summer series on the Ten Commandments, “The Laws of Love.” Number two is God’s command not to have any idols. Why? Because God is bigger, better, and more intimate than anything we can imagine Him to be. Don’t put Him in a box!

The commandments are more than just a 3000-year old list of rules, they’re a picture of the incredible love God lavishes on his people after saving them from oppression and slavery. They’re also a model for how we display that love back to God and out to other people. Step 1? Choose faithfulness.
