GenErik

Previously my They Came Down From the North mixes have been months in the making studio mixes with everything planned and mixed to the second. There is a reason for that, mixes on a theme is hard. Much harder than live mixing a single genre. And this is what I have tried here: Whittling down a playlist of only Norwegian and Scandinavian artists of the last decade and a half into a semi-cohesive whole. It is much harder than it sounds, but then again I appreciate a DJ challenge.

And here is the result. I hope you enjoy the cool scandi sounds I have collected from 1996 to the present.

Intro in support of Scottish Independence. Soon my friends. Soon.

Dedicated to the godfathers of Norwegian electronica: Mikal Telle https://soundcloud.com/telle-records and Olle Abstract https://soundcloud.com/olle-abstract, who has influenced me (and the world) so much over the last two decades. And also to house legend Tore "Erot" Kroknes. RIP.

So this week's set didn't quite turn out the way I wanted. An hour before my set was scheduled I got hit by the iOS8/iTunes 12 syncing bug, which necessitated a complete nuking of my library. To even get tracks on to my iPad, I needed to do a full restore. Which of course also meant deleting any built up metadata: key, tempo and cue-point information. I ended up getting my music synced over, but none of that useful metadata. So for this one I had to lean back on my non-digital DJ skills. It's a bit rougher in some of the transitions that I'd normally like (especially some bad key changes), but for a flying by the seat of my pants sets I'm overall happy. It's got some orthodox programming, starting off with my favourite Beatles remix of all time, moving on to a good chunk of classic hip hop, some mashups and ending up at tropical house. Once I relaxed from my initial panic I had a lot of fun with this. Hope you do to.

01. The Beatles - Come Together (Rhythm Scholar Remix)

02. The Nextmen - Blood Fire (Feat Dynamite MC)

03. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Summertime

04. De La Soul - All Good?

05. Guru - All I Said

06. Daft Punk - Around the world (Fdel Remix)

07. Go Home Productions - Rapture Riders (Blondie vs. The Doors)

08. Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead (featuring Will.I.Am)

09. Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime (Virgin Magnetic Material Remix)

10. St Germain - So Flute (Mozambo Remix)

11. GenErik - Something Good Can Make a Lisztomaniac of You

12. GenErik - Warehouse Parties (Sample)

13. GenErik - How Do You Really Know Something to be GenErik? (Sample)

14. Thulin - Dancer (Kygo Remix)

15. INXS - Need You Tonight (Rhythm Scholar Funk Planets Remix)

16. James Yuill - This Sweet Love (Prins Thomas Sneaky Re-Edit)

17. GenErik - Just Jack - Starz in Their Eyes (House DJ Retooling)

18. Foster The People - Helena Beat

19. Passenger - Let Her Go (Kygo Remix)

An important lesson for all (digital) DJs: Your equipment will let you down sooner or later, be sure to be ready for that.

Teja (https://soundcloud.com/tejavuofficial) is a local up and coming talent I have been tracking almost all this year. Been hunting her down to get on the podcast for a while, so I am finally glad to have her. She's certainly on to a great start in her career with being a finalist in the Your Shot 2014 competition, mentorship from the best in the business and gigs and residencies aplenty. I am super stoked to have her on the show and she's selected a cracker selection of tracks including the SBRBN 21 Questions remix I featured in episode 11: Into the Sea.

Unfortunately Teja had some bad news regarding a close family member just prior to this mix, so she'd like to dedicate this to her grandfather.

Slightly less bro-ish ghetto funk edit. All credit to Funkanomics. Slightly edited and remastered for 2014.

Just edited and mastered to fit in better with my current sets. Again: FUNKANOMICS.

Sorry the Podcast is late this week. Had a late cancellation, and a disastrous attempt at a mix of my own. Fear not, bringing you an absolute classic: They Came Down From the North I + II. The cream of nordic and scandi electronica with a bias towards Bergen and Norway (of course). Poured my heart and soul into these in 2012, and again when I had to remaster and partially remake them again last night until 4am. Enjoy!

RIP The Knife :(
