Title: South and West: From a Notebook
    Author: Joan Didion
    Narrator: Kimberly Farr
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 2 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-21-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
From one of the most important chroniclers of our time come two extended excerpts from her never-before-seen notebooks - writings that offer an illuminating glimpse into the mind and process of a legendary writer.
Joan Didion has always kept notebooks: of overheard dialogue, observations, interviews, drafts of essays and articles.
Here is one such draft that traces a road trip she took with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, in June 1970, through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. She interviews prominent local figures, describes motels, diners, a deserted reptile farm, a visit with Walker Percy, a ladies' brunch at the Mississippi Broadcasters' Convention. She writes about the stifling heat, the almost viscous pace of life, the sulfurous light and the preoccupation with race, class and heritage she finds in the small towns they pass through.
And from a different notebook: the 'California Notes' that began as an assignment from Rolling Stone on the Patty Hearst trial of 1976. Though Didion never wrote the piece, watching the trial and being in San Francisco triggered thoughts about the city, its social hierarchy, the Hearsts and her own upbringing in Sacramento. Here, too, is the beginning of her thinking about the West, its landscape, the Western women who were heroic for her and her own lineage.
    Critic Reviews:
"Didion at her most fascinatingly unfiltered, recording folksy vernacular at a motel pool, having G & Ts with Walker Percy, and searching fruitlessly for Faulkner's grave in an Oxford cemetery...her riffs on everything from Gertrude Atherton to crossing the Golden Gate bridge for the first time in three-inch heels captures the thrill of a writer discovering her richest subject: the American mythologies that governed her own romantic girlhood, a yearning for an MGM-style heritage that never really was - a yearning that feels freshly perilous in its delusions." (Vogue)
"A compelling book - rooted utterly in a past now all but lost to us, while also incredibly timely and relevant.... It bears the hallmarks of Didion's sparkling prose.... It finally sees the light of day at a moment when California and the Real America of the South are warring over the soul of the country.... Vital, ultimately, for how it demonstrates (even inadvertently) how such a tension plays out." (Los Angeles Review of Books)
"You'll learn more about America's future from Didion's 40-year-old field notes than you will from tomorrow's newspaper." (Esquire)
    Members Reviews:
    Good Read
A must read for any Didion fan or fanatic, which I am!
    Mixed bag--but still great writing
Didion's meditation-slash-travelogue on the American South ranks with her best writing. The piece on the West, though, feels unfinished (as it is).
THE LEGEND CONTINUES TO EXPLORE AND CHALLENGE US.
My guess is that some of the negative reviews posted here are from readers who always expect "something to happen". The ironic part is, as with most of Didion's canon, a great deal in fact happens. Just not in the typical, overdramatic fashion of writers like Mailer or Tom Wolfe. These brief snippets of the South are haunting; I could almost feel the humidity and ennui of the citizens rising from the pages. And the California section answers a question I've asked most of my adult life.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Nonsense wakes up the brain cells. And it helps develop a sense of humor, which is awfully important in this day and age." (Dr. Seuss)
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
In the United States, March 2 has been designated "Read Across America Day", and the date of that commemoration is due to the fact that Ted Geisel was born on that day in 1904. Few Americans are familiar with that name, but as kids, everyone comes across the books he wrote under the famous pseudonym Dr. Seuss.
Believing that fantasy "is a necessary ingredient for living", Geisel was attracted to writing humorous stories from a young age, even as a contributor to Dartmouth's humor magazine. During the first 30 years of his life, he wrote humorous short stories, articles, and even comic strips for a variety of publications. Occasionally he used his middle name, Seuss, to publish. But it was not until the late 1930s and early 1940s that "Dr. Seuss" truly found his niche as a writer of children's books.
Initially, readers knew Dr. Seuss as a World War II political cartoonist (if at all), and his first attempt at a children's book, "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street", was rejected over two dozen times by publishers. It was not until the 1950s that Dr. Seuss began publishing some of his most famous and revered titles, including "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." In 1954, Houghton Mifflin asked Dr. Seuss to make a book only out of words that first graders could read. The result was his seminal "The Cat in the Hat", a popular illustrated rhyme book for kids that has remained a best seller for over 50 years, along with the equally famous "Green Eggs and Ham" (1960). Dr. Seuss had hit it big, and he continued to write children's books even as he and his wife steadfastly refused to have children of his own.
American Legends: The Life of Dr. Seuss examines the popular works that everyone remembers, but it also profiles the life, controversies, and legacy of one of America's iconic authors. You will learn about Dr. Seuss like you never have before, in no time at all.

excellent comprehensive look at the life and legend of Ted Geisel
Ted Geisel, famously known as Dr. Suess, lived a life of extreme tenacity and indomitable will that refused to allow what was birthed in him to die. He faced along his career many rejections, both as a person, writer, and cartoonist, yet continued to dream until his desires turned to reality and in a rather enormous way.
He was born into a family of means in Springfield, Massachusettes to German immigrants that came to America at the end of the 19th century from Bavaria. From an early age he had a fascination with drawing goofy looking animals and at age 12 he would win a youth drawing contest. He attended Dartmouth College and eventually became editor of the school's humor magazine.

I've said this before...some people go through their entire lives without a story to tell. Daniell's story is amazing.
Decades ago I began a mission to read everything Grahame Green wrote. I'm unsure why I selected his work from all the others I'd managed to avoid throughout my entire education, but I'm more grateful than ever to have absorbed so much of his work. Being a Vietnam veteran changed my attitude about one, The Quiet American. Having studied more than my share of history pertaining to the Vietnam Wars The Quiet American made the years prior to our involvment much more real to me. Personal. Now Danielle's book. I only received my copy yesterday, but from the opening comments I couldn't put it down. It made one small time frame vivid, but more than that, Danielle shared so much of herself and her disharmonious upbringing by her gorgeous but very complicated mother. I've said this before...some people go through their entire lives without a story to tell. Daniell's story is amazing. The fact that she matured into the woman she is is astounding considering the emotional obstacles she survived during her entire youth.
    Couldn't stop reading!
I chose a 5* rating because once I starting reading I couldn't stop and read it in one sitting. Excellent!
    She seemed quiet growing up
A story that many might find difficult to believe but sadly, it is the true story of the author. Well documented as memories can sometimes change over time. Some grammatical errors but not enough to keep me from reading the book.
    Bright New Voice
As a college Dean, I want recommend this book to all English departments searching for a bright new voice in the fantasy genre. Great read!
    Excellent
This book was impossible to put down. What the author experienced with her very demented mother over decades was heart -wrenching. It is just unbelievable how much she achieved and overcame all on her own!

    Publisher's Summary:
This essay resulted from an article written by the author, for a website in the United States. It tells of how four of the greatest British authors of the Gothic period, at one time or another, came to visit or stay in the ancient seaport of Whitby, on England's rugged North Yorkshire Coast. Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Lewis Carroll, and Bram Stoker all came to Whitby and its surrounding area during the 19th century, and received direct, or in some cases and as the author proposes, indirect inspiration for the wonderful works they wrote. You will hear in this audiobook, about where they stayed or dined within the town, as well as what elements of its folklore and scenery became part of their fascinating literary works. It also mentions who they met or chose to be with them, as they roamed this lovely old town's piers, cobbled streets, and narrow yards.

    Supernatural influence?
A short essay about the village of Whitby, which could have been the influence for some of the world's greatest scary tales! The author takes us to this village, where Bram Stoker, Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens, and Wilkie Collins spent time. He delves into some of the possible inspirations for some of their greatest works, including Dracula, Alice in Wonderland and The Woman in White.
An interesting read told with wonderful narration by Ms. Kingham. I was given an Audible version of this book by the narrator and chose to review it.
Paranormal Travel Guide to Whitby, England
Summary: The blurb sums up the tale. It's an essay about how Whitby, a town on England's North Yorkshire Coast, might have influenced the works of Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Lewis Carroll and Bram Stoker.
    Additional comments:
    - I heard the audioversion. The narrator did a nice job. I might be a tad biased, but so is the rest of the world who thinks the British accent is just lovely to listen to.
    - It's a super-short work. ~45 minutes
    - It probably would have meant more to me if I was a bigger fan of those authors. (Alas, Dickens is okay, but I find him a tad depressing and high school English sort of ruined his works for me. I've not heard of Wilkie Collins. A movie when I was a kid is probably my only experience with Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland. And I've never read Bram Stoker.)
    - The other thing that could make the work mean more to me is if I planned a trip to Whitby. I heard a rumor that it's been called the one book you SHOULD read if you plan to visit Whitby, England.
    - I found it kind of cool to hear about the tie-ins to the literature anyway.
Conclusion: Not sure if this book alone would tempt me to visit Whitby, but if I'd planned on visiting, it certainly would enhance the experience.
*I received a copy of the audio version... I freely chose to review it.
Enjoyed Dra c meeting the Jabberwocky!
Loved the Whiby Ghost Book by Mr. Fit z George and this works in partnership with that book. Petrina Kingham's narration adds an elvin charm to these proceedings, shedding light on the more literary history of this haunted seaport town. Good read!

    Publisher's Summary:
No one laughed more loudly than the King himself when the Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein, boasted, 'My boys are going to be bigger than Elvis Presley'.
It was the early '60s, and Presley, a living legend, appeared unassailable. Yet, in 1964, John, Paul, George and Ringo suddenly topped the American charts - and Beatlemania rolled the King in the greatest rock coup of all time.
Chris Hutchins, then a music journalist in his early 20s, was at the eye of the hurricane as the Beatles swept all before them. No other writer grew as close to the Fab Four from Liverpool as they conquered the world. As America turned on to the Beatles in a big way during their 1965 tour, Chris Hutchins used his extensive network of connections to mastermind the greatest rock summit meeting ever: a one-and-only rendezvous between the King and the pretenders who were seizing his throne.
With coauthor Peter Thompson, Hutchins draws on his own exclusive sources and unpublished personal archives as well as FBI files and explosive dossiers from the district attorney's investigators in Memphis to probe into the greatest rock story never told - one in which the lives of Elvis Presley and the Beatles became dramatically entwined.
They reveal the passions and the power play, the corruption and the conspiracies, the vendettas and the vanity behind pop culture's greatest phenomena. No audiobook has ever penetrated so deeply into the secret worlds of Elvis and the Beatles. This is the graphic firsthand account of the ambition, lust and greed that drove the most gilded icons in pop history to the very peak of the mountain. And of the dark and dangerous forces that destroyed them.

    Publisher's Summary:
James Joyce was an Irish novelist, short story writer, and poet. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde and is regarded as one of the most influential and important authors of the 20th century.
Joyce is best known for Ulysses (1922), a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in an array of contrasting literary styles, perhaps most prominent among these the stream of consciousness technique he utilised. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners (1914), and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). His other writings include three books of poetry, a play, occasional journalism, and his published letters.
Joyce was born in 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, Dublin - about half a mile from his mother's birthplace in Terenure - into a middle-class family on the way down. A brilliant student, he briefly attended the Christian Brothers-run O'Connell School before excelling at the Jesuit schools Clongowes and Belvedere, despite the chaotic family life imposed by his father's alcoholism and unpredictable finances. He went on to attend University College Dublin.
In 1904, in his early twenties, Joyce emigrated permanently to continental Europe with his partner (and later wife) Nora Barnacle. They lived in Trieste, Paris, and Zurich. Though most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe centres on Dublin, and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies, and friends from his time there. Ulysses in particular is set with precision in the streets and alleyways of the city. Shortly after the publication of Ulysses, he elucidated this preoccupation somewhat, saying, "For myself, I always write about Dublin, because if I can get to the heart of Dublin I can get to the heart of all the cities of the world. In the particular is contained the universal."
