This Novel Didn't Quite Come Together for Me

The narrator has a pleasant vocal quality overall, with excellent articulation and diction. I am always surprised by the stylistic differences between text narration and acting for other media--it always take me a few minutes to adjust to the relative neutrality of text narration, when I expect something more emotive or demonstrative.

In regard to the actual novel, I thought the narrative voice moved inconsistently between restricted and unrestricted narration. Also, the tone of the piece never seemed to settle--is this noir, is this mob/Mafia fiction, is it modern espionage? I'm afraid that, for me, the novel never quite gelled as a result.

not too heavy, not too light

Engaging.

One of Walker's better Bruno stories.

Narration was pretty good.. There were a few pronunciation startles when obviously well known French words were given odd pronunciation. The different character voices on occasion, were out of sync with the character speaking. While French speakers may be upset I was simply startled. For me the narration was better than 3 star overall.

An interesting plot that referred to shortcomings of French Intelligence and Diplomacy, was made more interesting through development of personalities at the higher end of policing.

Famous and wealthy people and a few beautiful women of all ages, set in the vineyards and old houses are linked to Bruno's beloved town and politics at many levels.

All up an 'enjoyable' listen.

Disappointing

Normally a satisfied follower of Bruno's evocative French stories with their marvellous French atmosphere but this one I found patchy with exciting incidents which didn't flow or grip as others in this series. Very well narrated as usual by Peter Noble.

Back on form

The narration was perfect and enhanced the sense of place which is the predominant feature of the Bruno books. The plot was carefully constructed and believable. Interspersed by the wonderful descriptions of the food and scenery of the area. I had been a little disappointed with the last Martin Walker novel but this has him back on form with the minutiae seamlessly absorbed. Can see this as a TV series.

Bien écrit, fluide, facile a lire. Excellent ÂjauneÂ. Peu de caractères et ceux-ci bien décrits, de manière complexe. La richesse des informations soutient un auteur érudit de lectures, intéressé et informé sur la police judiciaire. Roman élaboré. S'est avéré un excellent choix pour un roman de vacances! Merci M.
