Arthur Conan Doyle once remarked that The Adventure of the Speckled Band, first published in 1892, was his best Sherlock Holmes story. In it, a young woman, Helen Stoner, consults Holmes about her ill-tempered stepfather whom she suspects had some part in the death of her twin sister, Julia. She fears her stepfather has the same plans for her: he has forced Helen to move into the mysterious and disturbing room in which her sister died under suspicious circumstances. In order to save Helen, Holmes must solve the mystery of Julia's last words: "speckled band." Masterfully performed by Ben Lindsey-Clark.

Awesome

This book was great and awesome I loved it. It had adventure action and mystery. Awesome book I recommend you to read it!

Deductive Reasoning

I purchased this item in conjunction with a unit on deductive reasoning in an eighth grade classroom. The students were able to use the clues and solve the murder.

Really great one

I really like this story and the ending was so rewarding to me.

This was the worst story with Sherlock Holmes I have ever read

This was the worst story with Sherlock Holmes I have ever read. Don't waste your time. Clues make no sense. Writing is good, the story is weak.

Conflicting Economic Interests

The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Goodwin

This is the "Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", similar to the old "Classics Comics" from around 1950. Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). It has a short biography of Arthur Conan Doyle (p.46). There is a listing of Arthur Conan Doyle's works (p.47). Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). These "Sherlock Holmes" stories were written over a century ago. They used to be part of High School English courses. How many other novels from that era are still popular? Doyle followed crime news, his stories were based on true crimes that were adapted for these short stories. The written stories are better than the movies or "graphic novels", they tell about the life of those times. The drawings of these people make them appear much younger characters compared to the books. Your Public Library has the full uncensored story in "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes".

A young lady visits Holmes early one morning. Helen Stoner lives with her stepfather. The family was once very rich but have become much poorer. Her stepfather has a medical degree and married a young widow, the mother of Julia and Helen. Her mother died in an accident eight years ago. She tells what happened to her sister Julia. One stormy night Julia screamed, then died! Now Helen was moved into her sister's room and hears the strange sounds she heard the night her sister died! Holmes and Watson will travel to the Stoke Moran house. Dr. Roylott appears to tell them to keep away. Is there a motive to prevent Helen's marriage? Holmes inspects Julia's room and noticed a strange feature. Holmes looks into Dr. Roylott's room. He has a plan for the night. Early in the morning there is a light, then a noise from the next room. Dr. Roylott perished as a result of his own plot. Holmes explained what happened.

Release date: 02-04-14

Publisher: HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books

Publisher's Summary:

The sleek high-rises of Park Avenue make Frank Clemons uneasy. The former Atlanta homicide detective came to New York after a sickening murder case soured him on the South, but despite the glitz and excitement of his new surroundings and the beauty of the woman he shares them with, the city makes his skin crawl.

Now a private eye, he is only at ease in the city's darker corners, among the whores, gamblers, and pimps who call Eighth Avenue home. That affinity for the socially isolated is what draws him to the case of Hannah Karlsberg, an elderly seamstress who deserved a better death than she got.

Hannah's employer hires Clemons to find the victim's next of kin so the police can release the body for burial, but as he learns about the dead woman's past, which stretches back to the Lower East Side sweatshops of the 1930s, Clemons becomes obsessed with unearthing the decades-old secret that led to her death.

Critic Reviews:

"Rich in character, complex in plot.... Cook constructs a many-layered and shimmering tale in which the history, locale and personality build to an unsuspected, satisfying end." (Publishers Weekly)

"Strong prose and steel-etched characters complete an enticing puzzle." (Library Journal)

"Thomas H. Cook triumphs at teaching an old dog some new tricks." (The New York Times)

Riepilogo Editore:

Giuseppe Bttiston

Would you try another book from Georges Simenon and/or Giuseppe Battiston?

G.B. e' inascoltabile, basterebbe gia' leggere piu' lentamente.

Publisher's Summary:

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #36

Dime Mystery Magazine Audiobook, Volume 1

by Norvell W. Page, Frederick C. Davis, and Paul Ernst

We here at Radio Archives were pleasantly surprised when, with more than a smidgen of trepidation, we released our first Terror Tales audiobook last year. It was a hit, as were a slew of Terror Tales eBooks we subsequently released.

We thought: If customers like this brand of retro-horror so much, why not go back to the dark well from which it all sprang? That meant Dime Mystery Magazine, the pulp that started the Weird Menace sub-genre back around Halloween of the horrific year of 1933. Since we were planning on celebrating the 80th anniversary of Popular Publication's G-8 And His Battles Aces and The Spider during this autumnal epoch, why not do the same for their sister publication?

In brief, Popular Publications had a foundering title in Dime Mystery Book. It featured lead mystery novels with an emphasis on the sinister and the suspenseful. But readers shunned it. Instead of canceling the magazine, Popular dropped the word Book from the title, booted out of the feature novel, and ramped up the terror and horror.

Format: Unabridged

Length: 51 mins

Language: English

Publisher's Summary:

Mild mannered Catholic priest Fr. Brown solves another mysterious mystery. How did the dead man get into the garden of Aristide Valentin, Chief of the Paris Police. There was no way in and no way out other than past a well guarded door. Also you may ask how did he end up dead, and who killed him. There are plenty of suspects, but Fr. Brown sorts it all out without relying on the confessional, therefore remaining true to his vows.

Members Reviews:

Storyline little bit hard to follow

The storyline was a little bit hard to follow it might've been the narrator and the boys GK Chesterton supposed to be an awesome writer and perhaps this was not one of his better told stories though it was nice to listen to.
