This was a superb blast of fun, even for us grown up kids. Spot on, it made me chuckle, feel happy and the flow was effortless. Two boys get into fun and mischief, one is a wizard, the other human. May not be for every adult (the genre being Juvenile fantasy), but it was light and refreshing. Good to be reminded of the fun you wanted to have as a kid. It made me happy.
Fun Fantasy for Pre-teen boys
Eleven-year-old Tyler Dunsmore notices a âpuffy, marshmallow-like cumulus cloudâ floating above his suburban neighborhood in Providence, Rhode Island as heâs wishing for a best friend. Then, out of nowhere appears a boy with black hair and an impish grin. Tyler and Dirk immediately hit it off as if theyâve known each other since kindergarten.
Thus begins My Wizard Buddy by the writing team of Brian Wu and Scott Spotson. The 123-page fantasy novel is a perfect match for pre-teen boys looking for a thrill ride as Tyler soon discovers Dirk is a wizard from a distant star offering Tyler an adventure heâll never forget.
Since Tyler is shy and doesnât have many friends, Dirk, under the cloak of invisibility, gets Ryan, the most popular boy in sixth grade, to actually visit Tylerâs home. Other adventures include threatening crocodile men, a paintball war, and an actual real life adventure with the amazing Spider-man.
Warning: Just keep a watch on your kid while heâs reading this book so he comes up for air. He wonât be able to put this book down.
Michael Thal is the author of the Koolura series.
Light, fun, creative ...
I enjoyed reading this and it took me only a few days to finish, which sort of says it all. Light, fun, creative â with a few additional life lessons mixed in between. Thumbs up!
Tyler is a typical kid with a typical life until he meets a wizard
Tyler Dunsmore, the main character in "My Wizard Buddy," is a pretty typical 11-year-old boy. He doesn't like his older sister and he hungers for the newest video game, which his parents refuse to buy for him. He also doesn't have many friends and doesn't really know how to go about getting some. He's bored and more than a little whiny about life in general and especially his. (If you're a parent you can relate.) While daydreaming in an open field one day, however, his life changes dramatically when he's visited by a wizard - an alien wizard no less. Suddenly, he's cool but while things go better in his life there are some, well let's call them bumps in the road.
The narrative is fast paced: Tyler and his wizard buddy are busy almost all through the book and the adventures come thick and fast. For kids who are used to the rapid-fire pace of television and Internet broadcasts, this high-speed adventure novel should hold their attention long enough for them to make it through to the end.
