Simply crappy - don't waste your money

Would you try another book from Terri L. Sjodin and/or Terri L. Sjodin?

I may. I don't know. This book has been pretty bad - it hints to me that the author is all fluff. Lots of buzzwords thrown out, none actionable.

What was most disappointing about Terri L. Sjodins story?

As opposed to what was written on her Linkedin's page, I didn't think this was a very high content book.

Community is key to ones belonging

The Art of Community: Seven Principles for Belonging is a well-written, well-structured, and excellently delivered business focused book, targeting those in leadership roles, however its teachings can be applied to any person wanting to build or strengthen a community. The book is written by Charles Vogl, and it appears to be his first published work. The audiobook is narrated by Tom Dheere who has nearly fifty titles already narrated on Audible.

The book opens by explaining how our lives, whether we see it or not, are impacted and molded by our involvement within various communities we are a part of or seek to become members of. The author discusses the concept of inner and outer community rings and how we strive to be a part of an inner ring, yet within that ring we learn there are yet additional inner rings to be sought; a trap if that is our only reason to join a community. An inner ring member has additional privileges that are only given to its members such as executives in a company, etc.

The book covers the structure of a community requires with or without our knowledge. What the community stand for, what defines its member, what information is included or excluded, along with many other aspects make up a community. Leadership are those who make many of these decisions listed above, Gatekeepers are those who bridge the gap between outsiders and the inner part of the ring, while Members as those within the community ring, and outsiders are those external to the community ring. The author stresses that it is important to acknowledge, create, and nurture or grow the many communities which are a parts of our lives. I thought the discussion on both formal and information communities was informative. After reading this book you will begin to see the vast number of communities you are involved.

The author was able to open with a decent number of statistics and third-party research showing the importance of community and belonging. The book is similar to Tribes writing by Seth Godin, with this book being more generic in its application. The author covers each of the seven aspects of a community. These seven include: boundaries, initiation, rituals, stories, symbols, and growth of inner-rings. Communities provide a means of growth, nurturing, and belonging. After reading this book, I began to see the many communities we are all a part of or join to be one of the in-crowd.

Should be a movie

Hope it's true that Tom Hanks is developing something for HBO based on this book as it's a tale well told of how a man with deep family roots in the furniture manufacturing industry didn't cash in his chips as cheap imports flooded the US market. He fought back to keep factories going and save US jobs. The author doesn't paint him as a saint or someone with all the answers. If you don't know someone who has lost a manufacturing job because it went overseas or if you don't think those jobs matter to you personally, read this book. Millions of people have lost their jobs as US plants have closed. And those job losses affect everyone in this country one way or another. Reading about international trade agreements may sound like a cure for insomnia. But the author simplifies what happens when unfair trade practices by other countries leave people in this country with no way to feed their families. The book traces the history of the good, bad and ugly of furniture making in the South from its beginnings to the current day when some people question whether it can survive. If everyone doesn't support US manufacturing, lots of other jobs will keep going with it. This book isn't dry statistics about imports and exports. It's about real people struggling to survive and how US industry has to get creative to make that happen.

An internet blog review at best

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This title is a "review" of Peter Senge's book titled, The Fifth Discipline. The review was a poor regurgitation of the terms used by Mr. Senge. The review had no real insights into the uses of the 5 disciplines. It's only real valid point was that the 5th discipline, Systems Thinking, is the central point that cannot be ignored in his book.

The performance was poor in that there was an obvious pitch and rhythm change in the readers voice at a recording session break. This inconsistency is annoying. In addition, the editing of the audio was extremely poor. Several sections were read twice including the closing credits.

The 5th Discipline is ultimately about quality. This rendition and review did not have the quality I have come to expect from Audible titles.

Not actually a UPS Driver

The author spent most of his career in UPS management not as a driver. I thought the book was informative.
