Publisher's Summary:
"People don't leave an organization; they leave a boss" has become a truism in the workplace. The most common issue is that employees who get promoted from supervisor to manager or from manager to senior executive don't have adequate leadership and communication skills for the job. As a result, they are stuck in micromanagement mode.
This audiobook addresses the micromanagement problem by providing principles to help professionals think, coach, converse, speak, write, and meet strategically to deliver results. Booher guides listeners through the transition from being a tactical thinker conducting day-to-day administrative work to a strategic thinker dealing with critical problem analysis, generating innovative ideas and aiming at a targeted solution. While strategic thinking is the first step to standing out, if you are unable to communicate your strategic thinking, you will remain stuck. Booher's research-based practice of strategic communication gives managers the training they desperately need as they move into leadership positions.
The ability to take your knowledge, experience, and judgment and translate it for different groups and different levels in an organization transforms leaders from being ordinary to extraordinary.
Members Reviews:
Be a leader who laughs and other great advice
Dianna Booher is an incredibly prolific author who has emerged with another highly readable and practical book that will be helpful to people across many functions and levels of an organization. It not only asks leaders to think before acting but gives them the tools to do that effectively. I especially enjoyed her chapters on crafting strategic questions and being a leader who laughs. The examples and advice are spot on and well researched. Highly recommend this one!
An Essential Game Plan for Leaders Who Want to Excel
First, I invite you to watch my video portion of the review before reading this text section.
With clear language and vivid illustrations, Dianna Booher spells out the qualities of an ideal leaderâaddressing primarily the required communication skills for coaching, inspiring, and getting things done.
I applaud her recommendation that leaders who want to establish strong rapport will âditch the desk barrier.â They will move from behind their corporate desks, and then sit side by side with conversational partners.
Another valuable section offers her advice about negotiations. Reminiscent of the time-honored advice not to âwin the battle but lose the war,â she cautions us to be fair and reasonable in our requests. This approach will maintain good will, and will gain more for both parties eventually.
Regarding social media, she dislikes a shotgun approach that has marketers spending hours daily maintaining multiple platforms. Her solution: Participate in only a few, and engage in active dialogue regularly.
This book reflects why Dianna Booher has attracted numerous readers and audiences for three decades. You might wear out your highlighter noting âstrategic communicationâ passages you want to refer to again.
For anyone who wants to communicate well within teams and between teams
If there were a Pulitzer Prize for writing what you know, I'd nominate Dianna Booher for it based on her shiny new business book, Communicate Like a Leader.
