Pretty Good for First Time Leaders

This is a pretty good book for first time software leaders to get an introduction to everything they will need to learn from a mentor. The book alone will give you the ideas and concepts with a few sort of real world examples. What you will need to make the experience complete is a mentor to help you understand the nuance that a book just cannot give. The contributions at the end of the book are really valuable and I like how they tie to the overall themes presented in the book. Overall a good read that makes you think what you can do better.

I wouldn't have bought it if I was more aware of the 2nd half of the book

The initial advice sounded to me like a management style that is contingently applicable. If you happen to have a particular set of employees and a particular management at a particular company, then this advice would be useful.

The one star is for filling the 2nd half of the book with dreck. The collected writings are blog post quality, thematically jump all over the place and some had a advertisement feel to them.

Very practical with great advice. Short and to the point.

I consider Notes to a Software Team Leader a great introduction into (team) leadership literature. It helps you identify which mode your team is in (most likely the detrimental survival mode, which appears 'normal', because it's so common) and gives practical advice on how to level up your team to the next mode. Once the team is stable, more in depth books, recommended in NTASTL, are helpful for further improvement and to understand the theory behind NTASTL.

Great insights

Definitely recommend this book. Great set of real world examples, that I could totally relate to. At the end, the author has invited other writers who are experts on this topic - great idea coz that adds so much diversity to the book. Definitely a must read for a budding team lead but also any lead!

Interesting read with some good real world experience. Having read a number of blogs from Roy's website it was good to get some in-depth insight into some real work leadership issues.

I would recommend this book to any developer who has been pushed into a leadership no matter what the size of the team.

I liked this short book because it opened my eyes to the benefits and culture of the modern water cooler.

There are no better places than coffee shops to watch this develop

Ancil has tapped into something that is fundamentally a part of solopreneurs; working from coffee shops. I have been working from coffee shops for about seven years. Staying caffeinated and having wifi is a critical part of this journey.

Also, a part of this journey is community, building relationships that work, and connecting with other entrepreneurs that will enable us to be more successful entrepreneurs.

This is an enjoyable quick read extolling the benefits of working in coffee shops. I enjoyed the different perspectives - entrepreneurs, writers, coffee-shop owners - and the positivity of the stories they told. This is a discussion about how supportive your local community can be, especially within your local coffee shop. And when you add the easy access to caffeine, it's true that "coffee shop office" has perks it's hard to find elsewhere. I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

When I get stuck on a problem or need to shift gears in my work, my best tool is changing context. And the easiest way to do that is to change locations. Coffee shops are the first choice of places to go where I know I'll get the mental shift I need. It's no coincidence that the rise in popularity of coffee shops over the last 20 years has mirrored the rise in the capability of working remotely.

I've really enjoyed this book - best book on leadership I've read in the last five years.

The author really helps to separate the stereotypical leadership style of the military, which is basic and rudimentary, the stuff you see in movies made about Marines or boot camp, from real leadership that you need to lead bigger units. We have to understand how our co-workers and followers think, and how our boss thinks, but everyone is different. Too many people think that other people think like they do, and they could not be more wrong. The author lays out 9 types of individuals, which compares favorably to a ancient classification system used by the Greeks, so it is scientific and has stood the test of time.

Highly Recommended

For anyone running a small business, or about to start a new business this book is a valuable to the point text, which provides helpful insights as well as a structured approach (system) to better assuring effective and efficient business results. Having read M. Gerber's EMYTH and EMYTH revisited etc i found this text a very good succinct up-to-date account of how to build and grow a successful business. I also bought the Audiobook which allows me to listen again on the hoof. Read by Marianne herself i enjoyed her personable voice and enthusiasm which came through. A much enjoyed change of voice tone etc to so many other books i listen too...

Its not just a book to build a better and prosperous business - its as much to do with building a better, happier, and healthier life! Well worth the money! Best Regards Mel. Banford
