A jolly good time!
I became a fan of Ms. Saville after reading Wicked Beloved, so I grabbed this as well. I'm glad I did! A wonderfully paced romance, based in historically factual places and events, and it left me breathless.
Quick Read
The book was shorter than what I had expected. It was fast paced and an easy read. I liked the interaction between Jasabel and Miss Felicity, although, Miss Felicity could me most annoying. There was something about Captain Devlin's personality that was absence.
Short but sweet
If you are looking for an easy read, this book is for you. It is light on plot and development. If you want "real life," heavy pirate reading, you need to read the RB trilogy by C. C. Colee. Expensive books and sometimes hard to find, but well worth the read. Read RB in order.

The book has a good story line, but it was too short for my tastes. I literally finished it in just a few hours and was disappointed that it was over-hence the 3 stars for too short of a read.
Pirate finds his treasure
Captain Devlin's Captive reads like a novella, it is a condensed story of pirates and captives that is entertaining. It is a quick read but one that has likeable leads.
Jasabel Buchanan is the indentured servant of Felicity Chiltingham a mean, spoiled woman, whose father owns a large plantation in the West Indies. It was easy to despise Felicity. She takes selfishness to a new level. The two are attacked by pirates during their Mediterranean voyage.
Captain Neil Devlin has a score to settle with Felicity's father and takes her aboard his ship but he also kidnaps Jasabel too. Instantly Neil and Jasabel form a connection. Neil likes her spunky and generous nature; she is the anti-thesis of Felicity.
Neil and Jasabel are striving to overcome their past hardships, both have found themselves in desperate situations and both are nobly minded. There's not a lot of background story to fill in all the parts of their personalities but since this is not a 300 page novel, there is enough to give the reader an understanding of their motivations. Jasabel wants a fresh start from her humble beginnings and Neil seeks to assist others who have suffered at the hands of oppressive landowners, a fate he too has experienced.
Neil and Jasabel have a passionate romance. However there is a voyeur scene which was decidedly not very romantic, but overall the leads have a sweetly enfolding story. Furthermore they communicate with each other and respect each other's advice and opinions.
