Author's blindspots mar this book

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoy Ed Ward's NPR pieces about little known rock performers very much, but significant omissions and biases keep this from being an authoritative history of rock. This book purports to cover 1920-1963, but the author skips rather quickly from 1920 to about 1950 with only brief mentions of important artists like Louis Jordan and Bob Wills. He then gives short shrift to Bill Haley whose important role in the evolution of early rock, predates Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Elvis. Ed Ward is evenhanded in his approach to other performers here, but he is not only outright derisive of Haley ("his ridiculous spit curl") but worse, he perpetuates the uniquely American myth that Haley was an insignificant anomaly.

Comprehensive

It is wonderful to read such a well researched history of rock. I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment.

Tedious, monotone tome

This is much more like an encyclopedia (in chronological order) than a story. It is an endless recitation of names of people, songs, record companies, etc. There is no story interest or emotion whatsoever. How can rock & roll be told in a 14 hour monotone??

If you are looking for a reference guide this may be it, but I recommend it in print form where it would be easier to look up references. Otherwise, the reading of this book is great for insomnia as I have used it with great effect.

Better than several college texts on the topic

This book does an excellent job at navigating the odd twists and turns that happened in American music leading to the birth of rock and roll. I'm anxiously awaiting the next volume!

It would have been great if it also included audio clips of the guitars and music referenced in the book. For example, it would help to hear the difference between a single coil vs humbucking pickups, a Gibson Les Paul vs a Fender Strat, sample riffs, techniques, etc.

The Rise and Fall of the Glass Armonica

Angelic Music by Corey Mean is the story of Ben Franklin's Glass Armonica, the invention that gave him the "greatest personal satisfaction."

When we lived in Philadelphia in the mid-1970s to late 1980s we saw the Glass Armonica at the Franklin Institute. And we had heard a man perform on musical glasses in several venues around the time of the Bicentenniel. So I had heard the ethereal, angelic music of the musical glasses.

I had not realized that the Glass Armonica was all the rage in the 18th c and early 19th c. Chamber music including the instrument was written by Mozart, Beethoven, and Handel. Vituosos toured Europe playing the music that made women swoon.

It gained a tarnished reputation in the early 19th c when people believed the music could drive one mad and cause illness, or summon the dead with magical powers. Mesmer used it in his seances.

As music changed from small ensambles to large symphonic orchestras in halls the Armonica fell out of favor, relegated to being a museum curiosoity. But in the last twenty years it has found a revival, electronically enchanced, and used in pop music, movies, opera, and chamber music.

I was fascinated by this book. Corey covers the rise and fall of the musical glasses, the development of glassmaking, early musical glasses, Franklin's musical background and development of the Armonica, the hey-day of the Glass Armonica, and Mesmer's career and his use of the instrument, including his comissioning an opera from Mozart, the decline and revival of the instrument.

When German glassblower Gerhard Finkenbeiner saw a Glass Armonica in a musem in 1960 it was a curiosity. He rediscovered how to create the glass and instrument and the instrument found a revival.

Today a few people are experts, including Dennis James whose collaboration with Linda Ronstadt on six CDs revived an interest in the instrument.

I will never be Satisfied...with this

This isn't a bad examination of the songs in Hamilton and there are lots of interesting insights. In particular, as someone who doesn't know much about hip hop, I was interested to learn about all the call outs and references to hip styles and artists that appear throughout the show.

The audiobook is accompanied by a PDF annotated Hamilton script, featuring all the songs and Lin Manuel Miranda's footnotes about them. In the second part of the audiobook, Lin narrates these footnotes, though I think most people would need to have the PDF open in front of them to see what he is talking about in each footnote, as no context is given. The PDF looks nice and features photographs of the show in performance.

I definitely don't regret buying it and would recommend it to other Hamilton fans.

Fascinating History

Would you listen to Altamont again? Why?

Brilliantly researched, perfectly crafted. If you're over 55 and were reasonably tapped into popular culture in 1969, this reads like a whodunnit starring a cast of people that you at least feel like you know. Just an amazing tapestry of events that led to the death of Meredith Hunter and, ostensibly, the end of an extremely short period of naive innocence for the nascent Boomer Generation. Much like Gimme Shelter, the documentary of The Stones '69 American tour, this is written cinema verite. You will feel like you are there. But unlike the movie you will actually see how, over a period of months, a series tragic decisions were made by mostly guileless people with, again, mostly, pure, or at least reasonable motives. These decisions led to what has been called the worst day in rock-n-roll history. How was the acid at Altamont different than it's "Summer of Love" predecessor? What role did The Grateful Dead play in setting up the concert? How did The Stones Hyde Park experience with English Hell's Angels lull them into accepting the California Angels as concert security? What role did Rock Scully play? Who the hell is Rock Scully? Why was the concert moved, 36 hours before the start, to the hellhole that is the Altamont Speedway? Was Meredith Hunter just and innocent kid in the wrong place at the wrong time? Or was he something more nefarious? Was Mick Jagger to blame? The author says yes to this last question, although over 9 hours he does not make a compelling case to back his contention.
