    Title: Dreaming the Beatles
Subtitle: A Love Story of One Band and the Whole World
    Author: Rob Sheffield
    Narrator: Rob Sheffield
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-25-17
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 57 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone columnist and best-selling author of Love Is a Mix Tape, offers an entertaining, unconventional look at the most popular band in history, the Beatles, exploring what they mean today and why they still matter so intensely to a generation that has never known a world without them.
Dreaming the Beatles is not another biography of the Beatles or a song-by-song analysis of the best of John and Paul. It isn't another exposé about how they broke up. It isn't a history of their gigs or their gear. It is a collection of essays telling the story of what this ubiquitous band means to a generation who grew up with the Beatles' music on their parents' stereos and their faces on T-shirts. What do the Beatles mean today? Why are they more famous and beloved now than ever? And why do they still matter so much to us, nearly 50 years after they broke up?
As he did in his previous books, Love Is a Mix Tape, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran, and Turn Around Bright Eyes, Sheffield focuses on the emotional connections we make to music. This time he focuses on the biggest pop culture phenomenon of all time - The Beatles. In his singular voice, he explores what the Beatles mean today to fans who have learned to love them on their own terms and not just for the sake of nostalgia.
Dreaming the Beatles tells the story of how four lads from Liverpool became the world's biggest pop group then broke up - but then somehow just kept getting bigger. At this point their music doesn't belong to the past; it belongs to right now. This book is a celebration of that music, showing why the Beatles remain the world's favorite thing - and how they invented the future we're all living in today.

    Pop Storytelling Standout
If you are like me, especially on this 50th Anniversary of Sgt Pepper, you've read some, possibly many books on my favorite subject, The Beatles. And like the escape they provided in the early 60's after the Kennedy assassination and since, this book and the journey it provides functioned as yet another escape in these most difficult political times. Worth spending time together.
    Wonderful ramble
This isn't so much a history of the Beatles as a loosely chronological collection of essays. It's engaging, well-informed, and highly opinionated; it covers the group, the individuals in the group, the music, why many of the songs are brilliant but a few are rubbish, and why and how the world bowed down in homage. If you're a Beatles fan, get it. If you're a Stones fan, get it too - you'll find some useful information here.
Sheffield does a great job narrating his own book, with one exception. His occasional attempt at a British accent (usually in a quote from a Beatle) is pretty bad. Aside from that, he's one of the best writers-as-narrator I've heard. His passion for the subject comes through in his voice.
If you love The Beatles, this is a fun read!
Are you a Beatlemaniac? Listen to them every week? Taught your kids The Beatles? Think The Beatles? Then this is your book. Fun, insightful, educational, arguable and more. Wonderful narration by the author.

    Publisher's Summary:
I'm the Man is the fast-paced, humorous, and revealing memoir from the man who cofounded Anthrax, the band that proved to the masses that brutality and fun didn't have to be mutually exclusive. Through various lineup shifts, label snafus, rock 'n' roll mayhem, and unforeseen circumstances galore, Scott Ian has approached life and music with a smile, viewing the band with deadly seriousness while recognizing the ridiculousness of the entertainment industry. Always performing with abundant energy that revealed his passion for his craft, Ian has never let the gravity of being a rock star go to his shaven, goateed head.
I'm the Man is a blistering hard rock memoir, one that is astonishing in its candor and deftly told by the man who's kept the institution of Anthrax alive for more than 30 years.

    YES!!!
Scott Ian IS the man! I've been an Anthrax fan from day one. This book served to open my eyes to a lot of things that went on that we, the fans, had no idea of, and to dispel more than a few rumors. This book came along at exactly the right time. Huge, HUUUUUGE, respect to Scott for bearing his soul to us.
    love stories about metal
I heart about it finally got it, always loved behind the music this is a good substitute
    Scott is the Man
I feel like I lived this with him. Some things in here are very surprising. Would love to get a question and answer with him about this book.
    I love the inside stories
I was a fan of Anthrax and thrash in the 80s and the stories of their history along with the beginnings of the thrash metal scene was priceless.
No better narrator could have been hand picked.
That guy from Anthrax is a fucking great narrator. Its his own story so hes able to drive home the emotional impact in all the right places. Its almost as if he was in the room right there telling you story, as opposed to some guy reading a peice of paper. Good job "not reading".

    Publisher: Noise Creators
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 27 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
For over a decade, Jesse Cannon has been pushing creative ideas in music. You may know him from writing one of the most popular books on the music business, Get More Fans, or from his recording credits on records with the most varied set of bands you've ever seen, including The Cure, The Misfits, Animal Collective, Brand New, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Menzingers, Limp Bizkit, Basement, Leftover Crack, Saves The Day, Senses Fail, Weird Al, Lifetime, Say Anything, NOFX, Man Overboard, Bad Books, Transit, Somos, Conflict, and over a thousand others. You may also know his work as the host of the podcast Noise Creators and Off The Record or from writing for outlets like Alternative Press, Tape Op, Hypebot, and countless others. He just wrote a book about what he's learned working on all those records and writing about music's bleeding edge, taking on the subject he knows the most about; helping musicians fulfill their creative vision. Processing Creativity: The Tools, Practices and Habits Used to Make Music You're Happy With is the culmination of four years of poring over scientific studies, books and thoughts from top creators as well as his own experience to write a book every musician should listen to about what goes into making great music versus what bands do when they make a bad album.
Covering the pitfalls of creating music, the book thoroughly explores the hidden reasons we actually like music, how to get along with your collaborators, and patterns that help creativity flourish. While every musician says that being creative is the most important part of their life, they barely explore what's holding back them back from making music they are happy with. When trying to navigate the ways our creative endeavors fail there's no YouTube tutorial, listicle, or college course that can help navigate the countless creative pitfalls that can ruin your music.

    Holy cow, the reading.
This is the moat inept reading and production I've ever heard. The author rushes, reads without feeling, mispronounces simple words, frequently stops and starts in a jarringly new voice, and, worst of all, he frequently speaks through a disconcertingly audible excess of phlegm. Halfway through, after two attempts, I gave it up as unlistenable. The contents up to that point are mostly good, with a couple reservationsif not as novel as I'd hoped for.
    it inspired me
very valuable information for the creative person. helped me realize things about my creative process that could use some serious evaluation and work. excited to get to it.
One of the Most Important Books for a Creative!
This book is absolutely wonderful. I have dislexia and still found it important enough to work my way through a hard copy. When I discovered this had been released and narrated by the velvet voice of Jesse himself, I was ecstatic.
This book comes together in a magnificent way. Jesse works from the ground up by asking questions everyone thinks in the abstract but rarely puts into words, and then he works through and finds solutions to the problems. His approach is methodical, detailed, and interesting. He answers questions, and gives advice on topics that all creatives struggle with. If you create literally anything, this book is worth a fortune.

Rhythm and blues music evolved from all sorts of sounds: swinging jazz, gritty blues, and African American spiritual songs. The music's smooth mix of styles made it unique, and its passionate performers made it a sensation. Ever since Ray Charles hit the charts in the 1950s, R & B fans have held it down on dance floors. And R & B singers have belted out messages of love and calls for social change.

Title: Music in the Age of Anxiety
Subtitle: American Music in the Fifties (Music in American Life)
    Author: James Wierzbicki
    Narrator: Scott Carrico
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-15-17
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Derided for its conformity and consumerism, 1950s America paid a price in anxiety. Prosperity existed under the shadow of a mushroom cloud. Optimism wore a Bucky Beaver smile that masked worry over threats at home and abroad. But even dread could not quell the revolutionary changes taking place in virtually every form of mainstream music. Music historian James Wierzbicki sheds light on how the Fifties' pervasive moods affected its sounds. Moving across genres established--pop, country, opera--and transfigured--experimental, rock, jazz--Wierzbicki delves into the social dynamics that caused forms to emerge or recede, thrive or fade away. Red scares and white flight, sexual politics and racial tensions, technological progress and demographic upheaval--the influence of each rooted the music of this volatile period to its specific place and time. Yet Wierzbicki also reveals the host of underlying connections linking that most apprehensive of times to our own uneasy present.
The book is published by University of Illinois Press.
"The author successfully demonstrates the impact of social change upon Fifties music in a well-written and engaging way. Recommended." (Library Journal)
"This fascinating book is accessible for students and general readers, even as Wierzbicki offers new insights that will be of interest to specialists as well." (Gayle Sherwood Magee, author of Charles Ives Reconsidered)
"Wierzbicki is to be especially commended for his mastery of many sources and the way he has woven them together." (Michael Broyles, author of Mavericks and Other Traditions in American Music)

    Five Stars
Purchased for my husband for Christmas He is reading this book and enjoying it
oew te Beatles Klled Rock and oll was better
I'll get around to it eventually.
Excellent contextualization of 50s American music
Music in the Age of Anxiety by James E. Wierzbicki does a great job of placing the American music of the 1950's in historical and sociological context. He mentions that for him the 50s were simply the time when he grew up, so he brings that perspective to the analysis of what role the various music played as well as why. A writer significantly younger might have been unconsciously influenced by either the sugar-coated version of the 70s (Happy Days, Grease, etc) or the more realistic but dark version of the turn of the new millenium (Pleasantville, Good Night, and Good Luck, etc).
The writing flowed well with little academic jargon in the text itself but offers detailed explanations and resources for those interested in more than just the "that song really sounds good" aspect of music. If your interest is in music and not just songs, the endnotes and resources are a treasure while the text itself is clear and easy to follow.
As with almost every book that addresses music in conjunction with history, whether music history or history in general, this is 'a' history of music in the 19502, not 'the' history. Wierzbicki is not exhaustive in his examples but rather uses enough examples to illustrate his points within each section as well as the book as a whole.
Most of the history books and courses with which I am familiar emphasize a couple of points about why the musical changes that took place then took place, based primarily on the perspective of the authors or instructors.

Nothing "goes viral". If you think a popular movie, song, or app came out of nowhere to become a word-of-mouth success in today's crowded media environment, you're missing the real story. Each blockbuster has a secret history - of power, influence, dark broadcasters, and passionate cults that turn some new products into cultural phenomena. Even the most brilliant ideas wither in obscurity if they fail to connect with the right network, and the consumers that matter most aren't the early adopters but rather their friends, followers, and imitators - the audience of your audience.
In his groundbreaking investigation, Atlantic senior editor Derek Thompson uncovers the hidden psychology of why we like what we like and reveals the economics of cultural markets that invisibly shape our lives. Shattering the sentimental myths of hit making that dominate pop culture and business, Thompson shows quality is insufficient for success, nobody has "good taste", and some of the most popular products in history were one bad break away from utter failure. It may be a new world, but there are some enduring truths to what audiences and consumers want. People love a familiar surprise: a product that is bold yet sneakily recognizable.
All businesses, artists, and people looking to promote themselves and their work want to know what makes some works so successful while others disappear. Hit Makers is a magical mystery tour through the last century of pop culture blockbusters and the most valuable currency of the 21st century - people's attention.
From the dawn of impressionist art to the future of Facebook, from Etsy designers to the origin of Star Wars, Derek Thompson leaves no pet rock unturned to tell the fascinating story of how culture happens and why things become popular.

Insightful. Performance was better than I expected
I feel like I understand the world more after reading this. It wasn't too long and got straight to the information. I feel as though Thompson used the theories he outlined to make this book a HIT. I have no complaints at all and I plan on listening to this one a few more times.
    A hit!
I've never taken as many notes listening to a book as I did durning this one!
Very informative but too long at times
I learned a lot from this book as it was very informative however I found myself at times thinking to myself man is this chapter still going. overall this was a very solid read or listen I plan on buying this book just so I can reference back to it I strongly recommend this book.
Lots of interesting facts, not much content
the first few chapters are tough. Some of the stories the author shares are interesting, but he never tied it all together so it was useful in your business/ life. struggled to finish. Best part of book was the acronym MAYA. Just Google it and save yourself time and money.
    Interesting information with limited application
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would take the information in each chapter and create a clear application for the average business person, artist, or writer that wants to create a "Hit." The information in this book which comes primarily from anecdotes about past "hits," is interesting and even sometimes fascinating.
