Good start and end but not great

Most of the best insights are at the beginning and end. In between is a history of jazz and jazz artists which has been done better by Shipton and others, in much more detail. He doesn't actually get around to saying what his criteria for excellence are! A bit disappointing, but still worthwhile.

As much an ethnography of Black Americans as a history of the Blues, Jones long-established book is a pleasant-enough read for most anyone who went through college long before there were Black Studies courses to take as electives.

A wonderful read

Good read

A very interesting read that very covers the origin and development of a number of genres of music in America and their place in culture. Something to note is that a significant portion of the book is framed around racial issues (as you would expect from the title), and Mr. Jones can take a pretty venomous tone when referring to American history and culture.

Page-turning social history with smart and heart

Marcus writes in Girls to the Front of a cultural moment and movement close to her heart, but miraculously, that doesn't inhibit her journalistic perspective. With a sharp eye, her clear and often lyrical prose, and a masterfully constructed narrative, she gives the first steady view of the Third Wave feminist movement. The book is compelling as any novel, though just a few pages in, the depth and breadth of her research becomes breathtakingly clear. The publication of this book is a momentous moment in the archiving of this country's grassroots political history, and Marcus's burgeoning career. Brava!

Essential reading

This is a powerful rendering of some crucial years, a time that still resonates today in phenomenon like Pussy Riot and Girls Rock! I was part of this moment, and it still matters immensely to me... this book is a worthy document, and the result of painstaking research... check it out if you can!

This the type of media exposure the girls wanted all along.

It seems like Sara Marcus went above and beyond to get all of the different voices that made up the Riot Grrrl revolution. It wasn't about what music they listened, what they wore or how they fashioned their hair, it shows the movements purpose. She clarified a few points ( I always wondered how Courtney Love ended up being linked to it) and she makes it a point to not single out Kathleen Hanna as the leader, though it seems natural to want to do so. It was direct and informative.

I learned so much!

Makes me feel strong. I loved knowing more and getting more connected. Learning more really gets you fired up and feel empowered.
