William Haines, the number-one box office star of 1930, has somewhat faded into obscurity. In all likelihood his career wouldve survived the shift from silent films to talkies but could not survive the increasingly repressive atmosphere of Hollywood at the time of the production code. Biographer William Mann says the first "openly gay" actor may be somewhat of an anachronism - the idea didnt even really exist at the time - but calls Haines courageous nonetheless for abandoning his career when Louis B. Mayer told him to choose between his contract and his boyfriend. Bo Foxworth gives a rich, refined performance of this well-researched, sympathetic biography of the wisecracking actor whose life has proved as historically important as his work.

Juicy, Thoughtful and One of a Kind!

I had little to no knowledge of "courageous" Billy Haines and author Mann told an involved historical tale superbly. As the audio book ended I found myself going to google to look for additional information. I found archived photos of Haines, his pals and his amazing decor at a website in his name. Someday we will have audio books that

feature actual archived voices counter poised against the authors rendering. Mann's book and it's narration came alive when Haines was quoted. In the meantime I am content to remember Mann's rich and thoughtful exploration.

A Story That Needed To Be Told

What a fascinating life! Yet so few people really know of William Haines today. The author is right when he states that when you come down to it, this is a love story of a couple who just happen to be of the same sex. No different than the great enduring marriages you hear or read about from the humblest to the mighty.

AHHHHHHH - Just wonderful!!!

Just what I needed.

I love love loved it. I remember the moment that I heard that Nora died. I was on vacation with friends and one of them looked at the news burp on their phone to report it after a gasp. I had no clue who she was. I found out from the lengthy discusssion afterwards. Because of Delia's last name I took a chance on this book and boy oh boy am I glad I did.

Here is the skinny - 1) It's four and a half an hours long and 2) Meg Ryan reads it to you. Which can be bad and good if you are expecting hours of bang for your buck. It's exceptionally good and fabulous if you need a book to get you through 5 hours that will make you feel confident, chatty and fun at the end. It's a real mood elevator.

This book is chatting with your best friend - reliving heartbreak with a friend - hearing all your friend's funny stories and clucking your tongue at life with a friend. It's good company.

I ended up spending a lot of time googling Delia's entire family throughout the whole book. Imagine their parents, who wrote many of my most favorite movies, being so different from the characters that they created. That was mind boggling to me.

I've read over 80 books this year and Delia is the only one of those authors that I have joined facebook page with so I can keep track of them. When she writes her next novel or movie - I want to know about it.

Spectacular

Robert Greenberg's Great Masters are the BEST "Great Courses" lectures that I have heard until now. I loved Beethoven's courses and I loved Tchaikovsky's as well. Greenberg's style is unique: he speaks full of passion, the characters are well painted, the music is properly inserted.He points out to the music for example-- listen to the oboe, or look how the piano is the superb instrument-- and demonstrates the mood of the author at that precise time-- here he was sad, then he was happy. He retells with music the history of Tchaikovsky's life, his torments, and greatness.

Robert Greenberg's lectures are as entertaining as educational. Listen to them. You won't regret!

Would you listen to Great Masters: Tchaikovsky - His Life and Music again? Why?

I don't know if I would have the time again with all the other Dr Greenberg courses I am listening to. I have listend to about fifty four hours and counting. These courses are most invormative.and give you a very good idea of the composers life and the history of the area in which he lived.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Great Masters: Tchaikovsky - His Life and Music?

His relationship with Van Meck is very interesting, and the story about his Romeo and Juliet.

Right Up the Middle

After a very disappointing Wagner course followed by a stupendous Shostakovich course, I decided to put Greenberg in the lineup once again. This course started rather pleasantly with solid biographical background and excellent musical analysis of Stravinsky's early life and works. There's the typical Greenberg train wreck at about mid way through. He launches into a sort of "whose on first" dialogue about Stravinsky and another artist discussing a new piece.

Again, the jokes. This time we get a full routine smack in the middle of a serious discussion about World War 1 and the Russian Revolution. From there out, we get the usual corny Greenberg humor but not in as strong an application as usual. Perhaps his seemingly endless parody satisfied the frustrated comedian long enough to limp through the remaining lectures without need to ham it up?

I did learn from the course and enjoyed it for the most part. I am, however, weary of Greenberg's jokes which detract much from the subject matter. If you want to learn a bit about Stravinsky and get some insight into the technical aspects of his music, buy the course knowing you'll have to endure some bad humor.

The Great Courses should consider adding a couple of other music experts to their stable. It would be wonderful to have some variety in this category.

While not a home run, the course is a hit that will get you to first base of Stravinsky understanding. It's got some solid content and Greenberg obviously knows his stuff. Scale way back on the sophomoric humor and this would be a much better course.

Greatest 20th century composer I like

Robert Greenberg has done it again, Learn about the great Stravinsky and go to the ballet. Hunt up Dumbarton Oaks for a listen and you will be pleased with the results. I enjoy these great courses very much. I have now listened to all the composers that Robert has recorded, very enjoyable.

very informative about his life and music. enjoyable. I intend to buy some of Stravinsky' s music work very soon.

Well done

This is a good introduction to Stravinsky and his most beloved compositions including The Rite of Spring, Petrushka and his later works. Prof. Greenberg speaks clearly with good diction and displays a clear love and appreciation for Stravinsky's varied works. My one problem is that the course does feel a bit rushed at times (and Greenberg even says such!). Why not give the proper amount of time necessary to cover all of Stravinsky? Overall though, it's a nice course to listen through.

Greensberg is engaging, comedic and relatable in his lecture style biography of Stravinsky. He talks not only of his life but offers great education about his compositional style and insets musical samples of his work where appropriate.

Narrator seems to be reading off the page as if from the first time. almost seems like he's losing his pace sometimes. a very difficult listen

It was very informative to learn about Mark Twain. I have started to listen to Innocents Abroad. Great refresher and I learned many things that were new to me. Look forward to many more great courses lectures.

Annoying

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Eliminating the introduction in the beginning and the applause after each segment. This is unnecessary and really annoying.

Things about Mademoiselle Magazine I never knew

I came of age when Mademoiselle Magazine was not all beauty and fashion as it seems today. I also envied the girls that were chosen to be interns for the month of June and live at the Barbizon. By the time I was in college Mademoiselle no longer published articles about writers and politics and the arts plus fashion. Plus the intern program has lost its momentum. The 60's were taking their toll. However it is always interesting to see the underbelly of glamorous.

Very interesting but narration was unusual

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, as I am a photographer and have admired Lange's work without knowing anything about her. The story introduced quite a bit of conjecture and assumption along the way, but in general the story seemed well researched. There were obviously more gaps in documentation than is common when putting together a book like this. Things that seemed obvious conjecture were well considered and generally had the ring of truth that keeps them from being speed bumps.

I wish I had read this book rather then listened to it. The narrator mispronounced quite a few words along the way, enough to be jarring each time. And they weren't just uncommon place names like San Joaquin (as San JoeWokin) but numerous common words.

I always assumed they would edit while recording to fix gaffes like these when producing audio books.

This is a very long and detailed book that is more about the world during Dorthea Lange's time than it is about Lange. With this said, it is eye opening, and provides some incredible insight into American History. I felt as though I received three books for the price of one. I am grateful to the writer for all the research as well as the narrator for the reading. Books of this magnitude, are not easy to read. Yes, there are mistakes in the narration, but this was not easy ground to cover. To sum everything up, if you like to hear the untold story of America's history during the depression as told through a photographer's life don't hesitate read this book.

Narrator is pathetic

What disappointed you about Dorothea Lange?

The narrator's voice and reading (mispronunciations, nasal, whiny) quality made this grating to hear.

What did you like best about this story?

i couldn't listen to it. I am a great fan of Lange, but this is a disservice.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kathleen Gati?

Rosenblatt or someone who can read orally.
