    Title: Gut Instincts

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 43 mins
    Language: English

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 2000, Heather Abel, a journalist and grad student, awoke from sedation at NYU Hospital to find three doctors standing over her bed. They told her that she had the worst case they'd ever seen of a rare Scandinavian disease called celiac. At first, this diagnosis - and its requirement of total adherence to a gluten-free diet - seemed like the simple answer to a lifetime of strange symptoms including anemia, insomnia, pneumonia, mouth ulcers, missed periods, and neck pain so severe that for months preceding the diagnosis she hadn't been able to turn her head. But even on the diet - and as glutenphobia erupted in this country, with nearly a third of Americans avoiding gluten - Abel still didn't feel well. When doctors, nutritionists, and websites all offered contradicting information on gluten and diet, she began to panic. How would she know what to eat?
In this powerful, wide-ranging, and emotional story about the limits of medical knowledge, Abel discovers why she wasn't diagnosed with celiac as a child. She considers how environmental fears and Internet anecdotes lead people to avoid gluten. And she grapples with the question that confronts us all: how to live calmly, even joyfully, in the face of uncertainty.
Heather Abel worked as a reporter and news editor in Colorado and San Francisco and taught creative writing at the New School University and UMass Amherst. She lives with her family in western Massachusetts where she is finishing her first novel.

gripping essay transcends its subject and had me in tears
I bought and read this gripping essay in one fell swoop this morning, and ended with tears in my eyes. It's a phenomenal, funny, intensely personal piece of writing -- she elevates medical memoir to an art form that deposits the reader in a contemplation of the mystery of the body. And I mean all our bodies, even those without dietary issues; even those following the most yowza diet and exercise regimes. Seriously one of the best pieces of writing I've read in awhile. Wow! read it, y'all!
    Short and sweet
An interesting description of the fight for better health when dealing with celiac disease. The only reason I am not giving this a 5 star rating is due to the open ended finale. As a reader I am left in limbo as to the disappearance and reappearance of the symptoms. What happened to the neck and shoulder ache? The narrative doesn't give a resolution to that issue. Furthermore, we learn about the Hungarian gene pool towards the end of the story, but no explanation as to what the link may be to celiac. (It's a concern for me too since I also originate from that part of town. Lol) Apart from that this was a great short read to finish whilst sitting in the sauna.
An incredible blend of memoir and research; smart and deeply felt
This book is about celiac disease but so much more besides--mothers and daughters, doctors and people living at the edge of medical knowledge, "cures" and doubts. If you've ever struggled to get a diagnosis (of celiac, or gluten-sensitivity, or lyme disease, or IBS, or Crohn's, or choose-your-own-autoimmune disease) only to be as confused as ever about how your body works (or is supposed to, anyway), then you will find yourself in this story.

    Publisher's Summary:
The real-life Alex Vause from the critically acclaimed, top-rated Netflix show Orange Is the New Black tells her story in her own words for the first time - a powerful, surprising memoir about crime and punishment, friendship and marriage, and a life caught in the ruinous drug trade and beyond.
Fans nationwide have fallen in love with Orange Is the New Black, the critically acclaimed and wildly popular Netflix show based on Piper Kerman's sensational number-one New York Times best seller. Now, Catherine Cleary Wolters - the inspiration for Alex Vause, Piper's ex-girlfriend, friend, and sometimes-romantic partner on the show - tells her true story, offering details and insights that fill in the blanks, set the record straight, and answer common fan questions.
An insightful, frustrating, heartbreaking, and uplifting analysis of crime and punishment in our times, Out of Orange is an intimate look at international drug crime - a seemingly glamorous lifestyle that dazzles unsuspecting young women and eventually leads them to the seedy world of prison. Told by a woman originally thrust into the spotlight without her permission - Wolters learned about Piper's memoir in the media - Out of Orange chronicles Wolters' time in the drug trade, her incarceration, her friendships and acquaintances with odd cellmates, her two marriages, and her complicated relationship with Piper. But Wolters is not solely defined by her past; she also reflects on her life and the person she is today.
Filled with colorful characters; fascinating tales; painful, sobering lessons; and hard-earned wisdom, Out of Orange is sure to be provocative, entertaining, and ultimately inspiring.

    Great listening!
The book was written with clarity and humor.
While the her drug currier involvement was off putting, I thoroughly was captivated by Wolters
    honesty.
    Fast moving !
I've really enjoyed the "Orange is the New Black" book and Netflix series. I wasn't sure how this book would compare. I thought it might be a copycat of the original work. I was pleasantly surprised that this was the other side of the story and continued to show the daily strife and struggle of women in prison. Well done!
    Must read for OITNB fans
And everyone else for that matter. I was totally enthralled by Piper Kerman's book, and proceeded to become equally obsessed with the show.
Consequently I was always most curious about the "Alex/Nora" character. Who was this woman? I totally admit to being one of those people early on, frantically googling "the real Alex Vause."
Finally we get to find out, and what a story. Fully engaging and entertaining- but at the same time, shining a much needed spotlight on our monstrously corrupt "justice" and prison systems.
We finally get our answers, we get a phenomenal story, and we also get a real wake up call. Piper Kerman is doing good work in the area of prison reform, and calling attention to the huge, huge miscarriages of justice, unfair sentencing practices and subhuman treatment of inmates that occurs on a daily basis. But a couple people are not enough. This is an issue that can touch ALL of us- and more easily than you would think. Something has to be done if this country is going to maintain its fast-fraying reputation as a "free country."
    Big credit to Ms.

    Publisher's Summary:
"[Terrence Holt] is Melville + Poe + Borges but with a heart far more capacious." (Junot Díaz)
Out of the crucible of medical training, award-winning writer Terrence Holt shapes this stunning account of residency, the years-long ordeal in which doctors are made. "Amid all the mess and squalor of the hospital, with its blind random unraveling of lives", Internal Medicine finds the compassion from which doctors discover the strength to care.
Holt's debut collection of short stories, In the Valley of the Kings, was praised by the New York Times Book Review as one of "those works of genius" that "will endure for as long as our hurt kind remains to require their truth". Now he returns with Internal Medicine - a work based on his own experiences as a physician, offering an insider's access to the long night of the hospital, where the intricacies of medical technology confront the mysteries of the human spirit.
"A Sign of Weakness" takes us through a grueling nightlong vigil at the bedside of a dying woman. In her "small whimpering noises, rhythmic, paced almost to the beating of my heart", a doctor confronts his own helplessness, clinging "like a child to the thought of morning". In the unforgettable "Giving Bad News," we struggle with a man who maddeningly, terrifyingly refuses to remember his terminal diagnosis, forcing us to tell him, again and again, what we never should have wanted to tell him at all.
At the bedside of a hospice patient dying in a house full of cursing parrots in "The Surgical Mask", we reach the limits of what we are able to face in human suffering, in our own horror at what happens to our bodies as they die.
In the psychiatric hospital of "Iron Maiden", a routine chest X-ray opens a window onto a nightmare vision of medieval torture and a recognition of how our mortality drives all of us to madness.
In these four stories and five others, Internal Medicine captures the doctor's struggle not only with sickness, suffering, and death but the fears and frailties each of us - patient and doctor alike - brings to the bedside. In a powerful alchemy of insight and compassion, Holt reveals how those vulnerabilities are the foundations of caring. Intensely realized, gently ironic, heartfelt and heartbreaking, Internal Medicine is an account of what it means to be a doctor, to be mortal, and to be human.

    Great book
Great overall, and maudlin at some parts (such as the part about hospice care). Most of the stories were excellent.
    excellent book, phenomenal narration
Loved it, an exquisite book complemented by an excellent theatrical narration; all turned into a work of art.
    Awful.
As a medical student I hated this book. His stories droned on with no point. It was like
he was trying to force memorable characters on us when, they were nothing more than annoying. It didn't make me excited about medicine, I wasn't interested in the outcome of his patients. It was overall a bore.
    Could not get my attention
I read many different medical memoirs and residency accounts and I normally can't put the books down. This was the first one that I couldn't force myself to pick up.

    Publisher: Audible Studios for Bloomsbury
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1966, at the ripe age of 22, Richard Goldstein approached The Village Voice with a novel idea. "I want to be a rock critic," he said. "What's that?" the editor replied.
It was a logical question, since rock criticism didn't yet exist. In the weekly column he would produce for the Voice, Goldstein became the first person to write regularly in a major publication about the music that changed our lives. He believed deeply in the power of rock, and, long before it was acceptable, he championed the idea that this music was a serious art form. From his unique position in journalism, he saw the full arc of events that shaped culture and politics in the 1960s - and participated in them, too.
He toured with Janis Joplin, spent a day at the Grateful Dead house in San Francisco, and dropped acid with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. He was present for Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, the student uprising at Columbia, and the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention. He was challenged to a boxing match by Norman Mailer and took Susan Sontag to her first disco. Goldstein developed close relationships with several rock legends - Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, to name two - and their early deaths came as wrenching shocks, fueling his disillusionment as he watched the music he loved rapidly evolve from a communal rite to a vast industry - and the sense of hope for radical social upheaval fade away.
Another Little Piece of My Heart is the intimate memoir of the writer as a young man with profound ambition. It is also a sweeping personal account of a decade that no one else could provide - a deeply moving, unparalleled document of rock and revolution in America.
    Critic Reviews:
"A deeply felt and largely compelling portrait of an age that indelibly marked everyone who took part in it. Indispensable for understanding the culture of the '60s and the music that was at its heart." (Kirkus Reviews [starred review])

Undeniable story that can span generations.
Amazing story. The kind of struggle that can span generations. Something the current alternative culture can relate to and a life their parents lived. Maybe they can better understand each other through Goldstein's story.
Impressive how self aware the author is of himself and how truly he can capture the flaws of even his idols. Insightful perspective to the rockers like Joplin, Morrison, Dylan, Jagger, etc that no one else has revealed in their grounding vulnerability that led to their downfall, fame, or both.

    Title: Visiting Hours
Subtitle: A Memoir of Friendship and Murder
    Author: Amy Butcher
    Narrator: Emily Woo Zeller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-07-15
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
With echoes of Darin Strauss' Half a Life and Cheryl Strayed's Wild comes a beautifully written, riveting memoir that examines the complexities of friendship in the aftermath of a tragedy.
Four weeks before their college graduation, 21-year-old Kevin Schaeffer walked Amy Butcher to her home in their college town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Hours after parting ways with Amy, he fatally stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Emily Silverstein. While he awaited trial, psychiatrists concluded he had suffered an acute psychotic break. Amy was severely affected by Kevin's crime but remained devoted to him as a friend. Over time she became obsessed - determined to discover the narrative that explained what Kevin had done, believing that Kevin's actions were the direct result of his untreated illness.
The tragedy deeply shook her concept of reality, disrupted her sense of right and wrong, and dismantled every conceivable notion she'd established about herself and her relation to the world. Amy eventually realized she'd never have the answers or find personal peace unless she went after them herself. She drove across the country, back to Gettysburg for the first time in the three years since graduation, to sift through hundreds of pages of public records - mental health evaluations, detectives' notes, inventories of evidence, search warrants, testimonies, even Kevin's own confession.
This is Amy Butcher's deeply personal, heart-wrenching account of the consequences of failing her friend when perhaps he needed one most. It's the story of how trauma affects memory and the way a friendship changes and often strengthens through seemingly insurmountable challenges. Ultimately it's a powerful testament to the bonds we share with others and the profound resiliency and strength of the human spirit.

    Two Stars
    boring
    Sad read
I found this book to be very depressing. It was an effort to finish as there is no way it could turn out with any hope of a positive outcome. I realize such is life...
    Indulgent
This author is so driven to make a tragedy about her she morphs into someone she is not. Initially characterized as from a healthy happy home, she then strangely and suddenly tells the reader she was really depressed and suicidal and suffering just like her friend, the murderer. She is as tormented as he. The victim is an afterthought--the author is just as much as victim. She really really does have PTSD and it really really is her tragedy. She keeps saying so at least.
    Beautifully sensitive and thought-provoking
Despite the murder tagline, this is not the story of what happened to Emily. It is a story about Amy and a rich, vulnerable, and often poignant exploration of how our memories are reforged by tragedy. I enjoyed Visiting Hours and look forward to seeing what's next from the author!
I hated this book for so many reasons - the most ...
I hated this book for so many reasons - the most important is that the victim who was stabbed 27 times is just an afterthought. Emily who will never marry, Emily whose parents will never hold her baby and Emily who never gets any sympathy whatsoever in this self-indulgent book.
Instead we are supposed to grieve for the author who didn't even know Emily and I'm guessing didn't know the killer all that well either.

    Entertaining and Realistic
This book is a good help for those struggling with overeating. As a therapist-intern working with such clients, it left much to be desired... A little slow and not enough depth of coverage.
Loved this so much I bought the book and audiobook
Where does Thinspired rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Immediately when I began reading this book, I felt as thought it was written just for me. I have never felt as connected to another author's story as I did this one. I bought the audiobook after I read the book so I could listen to it as well, and reinforce the helpful information that I got from the book.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the fact that it felt as though I was having a conversation with a friend, rather than just reading a book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I actually did laugh at how frankly the author spoke at times. I loved it!
    Any additional comments?
I really wish that the author had narrated the book. Having someone else read it takes some of the personal feel away from it.
    Informative.
Mara spoke about what worked for her. The message that resonated with me is that you can NOT work out and eat whatever you want and expect weight loss results.
    great tight book.
very good information in right sized chunks. very inspirational and one of the few tell it like it is weight loss books for real people
    Inspiring
I really liked this book. it was an inspirational story of weight loss, struggles, and coping mechanisms.

    Publisher's Summary:
Barbara Bush is certainly among the most popular First Ladies ever to live in the White House. Politics aside, people worldwide have come to admire her wit, her candor and compassion, as well as her unswerving devotion to her husband and children.
In her memoir, Mrs. Bush for the first time gives listeners a very private look at a life lived in the public eye for more than 25 years. She begins with a compelling portrait of her early years, including: growing up in Rye, New York, and meeting George Bush; life as a young bride and mother, moving far away from home to West Texas; and the almost unbearable pain of losing a child.
With contemporary American history as the backdrop, Mrs. Bush remembers the shock of learning that her fiancé has been shot down in the Pacific during World War II; the disbelief when a black friend is refused service in a Southern restaurant in the 1950s; and the fear when she is caught in the middle of a student protest march in the 1960s.
She recounts her years in public life, from first moving to Washington when George Bush was elected to Congress; to her experience living in New York as the wife of the Ambassador to the United Nations and in China as wife of the U.S. envoy. She talks candidly about the ups and downs of three presidential campaigns and describes her role as the wife of the Vice President, culminating in the climactic White House years.
Drawing upon excerpts from her diary, which she has compiled for more than 30 years, Mrs. Bush takes us behind the scenes of the Persian Gulf conflict and the end of the Cold War. She talks about both the Bushes' struggle to overcome Graves' disease and how she faced the controversy that erupted at Wellesley College before her commencement speech.
Through the friendships she developed over the years with world leaders and their spouses, we meet and get to know the Gorbachevs, the Thatchers, the Mitterrands, the Mubaraks, and many others.

It is so well done but I believe that to be true because in this case, truth is better than fiction. This is a real love story about people I can be VERY proud are Americans and served my country, each other, their family and friends with love, honor, and loyalty. And they love God...most important of all.
Very happy to experience such a fun peek into their lives.

Length: 8 hrs and 51 mins

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This hilarious, irreverent, and profoundly honest memoir explores our cultural obsession with social media and dares to ask: Who is the real you, and what is the story you tell others?
At age 26 Dave Cicirelli found himself at a crossroads. While his friends on Facebook appeared to have lives of nonstop accomplishments, his early adulthood felt disappointingly routine. So one October morning, Dave announced on Facebook that he was dropping everything and heading west. Many thought him brave - or crazy.
No one guessed he was lying. "Fake Dave" set off on a wild adventure, toilet papering an Amish horse and buggy, freight hopping with a farmer's daughter, and being kidnapped by a religious cult. But the online prank quickly became a social experiment. People began connecting over his journey, and some were inspired to change their own lives. But as Fake Dave's popularity grew, the real Dave became increasingly isolated, struggling with the implications of his secret.
Clever, funny, and surprisingly candid, Fakebook is a true memoir of our digital age. It explores what the old ideas of reputation and relationships mean in our new world of constant connection and ultimately asks: How do you draw the line between your virtual self and who you really are? And can you discover yourself on a journey that never took place?
    Members Reviews:
Not Certain I would Forgive Him
I bought this book because I often wonder how much of what people put on their statuses is true. I also wonder at how gullible we are. Would we believe what the status says even as we question whether or not it could possibly be true? This book dives into that with an experiment. I enjoyed the posts and responses in the book. They were what is best about this book. Even some of Dave's musing were interesting. More often though I was bored by his musings. Maybe because I had my own going on and just wanted to know the facts. So while I give it only three stars if you are a Facebook user, I would probably tell you to read it but be prepared for some parts to bore you.
Humorous and Thought Provoking - Highly Recommend
If you post on Facebook you will appreciate the context of this book. Far more than a humorous memoir of a virtual life posted on Facebook, Fakebook is a thought provoking and insightful look at social media and its affect on our relationships. Fake Dave will make you laugh but the Real Dave will make you think. Publishers Weekly said it best, "Cicirelli's comic online fever-dream is told with style and is a knockout."
    Great read
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was easy to read, entertaining, funny, but also thought-provoking. Very interesting social commentary on how people want others to perceive them on facebook, but it goes beyond that into just people and relationships. If you are interested in social media or sociology, and like humorous, light reading, I think you would like this book.
    Hilarous and smart book
Really really enjoyed this book. It's part memoir, part fiction, and part intersting sociological study of how our online personas and social media in general has changed the way we all relate to ourselves, our peers, our "friends" and actual friends, etc. Smart and thoughtful, while being totally fun.
    Not what I expected
    This book was entertaining.

The fifteenth fostering memoir by Cathy Glass.
Danny was petrified and clung to me in desperation as I carried him to my car. Trapped in his own dark world, he couldn't understand why his parents no longer loved or wanted him and were sending him away.
While Danny's parents have everything they could wish for in material terms, they are unable to care for their only child. This is where Cathy comes in. On a cold, dark evening, Danny finds a place in her home where he can be himself, away from his parents' impatience and frustration. Often in his own little world, six-year-old Danny finds it difficult to communicate, finding solace in his best friend and confidant George - his rabbit.
Cathy quickly becomes aware of his obsessively meticulous behaviour in addition to his love of patterns - he sees them everywhere and creates them at any opportunity - in his play and also with his food. She realises that patience is the key to looking after Danny as well as her well-tried strategies for managing children's behaviour.
With his father refusing to cooperate, it becomes increasingly likely that Danny will be living with Cathy permanently until she gets an opportunity to speak her piece.

Thank you Cathy for sharing Danny's story. I'm so glad that you helped his father understand Danny so that they could be a family again :)
The most hands on: how to become a better parent, book by Kathy class I have ever read
I love reading about what each child brings to the lives of Kathy and her family. And what she does for them.
One of the reasons why I found this book particularly enjoyable, are the descriptions in detail that she makes of Danny interacting with his pet. Shows how much pets can help people deal with their own emotions.

Listen at night for full effect!
There is something about listening to horror stories at night that make them a bit more effective. I chose this one as a story to listen to before bed, and I believe it made it that much better. The stories are not very realistic, but something about the description and narration in the dark drew my attention in and haunted me until I fell asleep!
