In another stunning event, the judge who tried, sentenced, and sent him to prison watched his journey and reappeared eight years after the trial. He became the driving force behind a Presidential pardon although he'd never supported a petition for pardon in all his years on the bench. Lyle retired honorably as a 747 captain for the airline he'd so horribly embarrassed and disgraced. He lives with his wife of 53 years and has five grandchildren. He continues to work with all the major airlines in their alcohol programs.

A Deep, Inspiring Memoir

Would you consider the audio edition of Final Approach to be better than the print version?

I actually read the first half, and then listened to the second half because the audio version was released. I'm a huge fan of audiobooks and that is my preferred method to consume stories.

What other book might you compare Final Approach to and why?

There is another book about the the same flight incident written by another crew member. Capt Prouse does't name names when referring to that other pilot, which makes this this version of events seem more objective.

What about Thomas Blocks performance did you like?

I'm already a fan of Thomas Block's audio performances. This is another fine production.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This is a story of a man who served our country fighting in Vietnam, commanded a commercial airliner, and then lost his battle with alcoholism before he even realized he was fighting it. Worse than the prison, he was publicly ridiculed even to the extent of becoming Jay Leno's regular punchline. Never did Captain Prouse blame others for his actions. He absorbed all his punishment with acceptance and started his life over from scratch--nearly penniless, a felony conviction on his record, prison time served, and his pilot career erased. This is the story of how he found a way to live with alcoholism (beating it everyday), and actually earn all of his pilot licenses back on-by-one.

Good read for the golf fan and sports fans in general

Great Insight into the Game

This is not a "how to do" book but an insight into the world of golf as seen through the eyes, or shall I say words, of George Plimpton. It's a great read, and as of this writing, I'm almost half way through.

I am enjoying this book, and as a new golfer, I am pleased to realize my errors are not mine alone.

If you like and hate golf this is the book for you. Read it.

Mr. Charming

Back way back when there were East Coast types that placed a high premium on what the English would call the glory of amateurism. So slip on that lime sports jacket and checked pink pants combo your grandpa used to wear, pour yourself a cocktail and meander out by the pool for some light evening conversation. Full of classic anecdotes like the one where two golfers are driving cross country and the one riding shotgun has a driver in his hand. Sometimes when they stop at a crossroads he likes to get out and take a few swings. Well out he gets one time and the driver doesn't notice, just takes off for about hundred clicks before he turns back.......

When Breath Becomes Air is a profound book about a young doctor who viewed the practice of medicine in a holistic, human way in terms of how he dealt with his patients, especially those with terminal illnesses. When he himself was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he put his philosophy to work, facing his end with dignity and purpose, and writing about his experience; a book that was completed and published by his wife after his death.

Paul Kalanithiâs When Breath Becomes Air is a book about a sad subject, but the author asks for no tears as he looks objectively at his own mortality. A must read! Very moving!

This is a Summary and Analysis about "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi, a memoir about Paul Kalanithiâs experiences as a doctor and as a terminally ill patient. I feel deeply moved by this summary alone. This is indeed a profoundly moving memoir by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis who attempts to answer the question, "What makes a life worth living?" Everyone should take the time to read this because of the huge impact it stamps on your whole being. This has greatly influenced my decision making whether or not to purchase the original book. I am definitely getting my hardcover copy.

Overall an excellent purchase and I highly recommend this summary book.

Long, rambling, disjointed narrative

I want to state up front that I am a Diane Rehm fan, so I am not happy to write such a negative review. Do I blame Diane for this rambling, disjointed book? No. I blame her editor. This person should have pointed out how the chapters could have been better organized and the multiple times when she is merely repeating ideas that did not need to be reiterated more than two times. This person has clearly failed her and the book.

The story begins, quite predictably, with the decline and demise of Diane's beloved husband John. From there, the story takes many jumps around in Diane's life, weakening the message(s) that she hopes to convey. First and foremost, Diane tells many stories about her relationship with John, freely admitting that he was a emotionally abusive husband (shutting her out many times emotionally, leaving her to feel as if there were something wrong with her). However, she continues to dote on him to the point where, as a reader, I wonder if she is suffering a very mild version of Stockholm Syndrome. Second, Diane jumps backwards often to discuss her own life and her choice to pursue a career in radio. While I find this interesting, she has written other accounts, so I feel as though these were not really relevant to the focus of this book -- On My Own (implying life after John). Third, she addresses how much she desires to advocate for Euthanasia or Assisted Dying. While I find this topic fascinating, her continual circling back to it and repetition about things she has already covered gets old. I respect her decision and hope that she does continue to advocate for such an important issue, I don't feel that she really achieved her goal of convincing others to investigate and possibly decide the same on their own. Lastly, the book continues on and on and on. Just as I would feel that she had finally reached the end, there would be another chapter.

Have read both of Ms Watkins' books re Natchez Trace/Lewis. Highly enjoyable; highly recommend! Humorous and finely crafted.

Yes. Very entertaining during a recent long car drive.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed, which is another memoir about a woman's journey and her relationship with a parent.

There were many, but I laughed when her father kept badgering her to sign books so he could sell them.

The father's chapter on getting older and the health problems it brings.

This was clearly a deeply personal book... All of the characters were realistically flawed, but very likable. It made me reflect my familial relationships.

I liked all of the interaction with people along the Trace... My favorite was when a shoe salesman said something like, "There is no cushion that will cure crazy..." That made me laugh out loud...

I really like when the author reads their work. They know exactly what they meant and it brings an additional depth to the words. I really enjoy it when Neil Gaiman reads his work and the same goes for Andra Watkins.
