Glimpse of true family emotions

I became absorbed into the narrator's honest, emotional account of his father's last year's. I was able to identify with his main protagonist, his very complex father.

I was very moved by the tender, raw emotions laid bare. Very cleverly written; I was very tearful at the conclusion of Philip Roth's moving account of his father's death. I was also aware of the humorous theme running through the story. I recommend highly.

This is an intriguing inside tale of the United Nations' Iraqi "Oil for Food" program that is interesting enough but add to that a very well written story and superb narration and you have a great story...perfect for audio.

Eye-opener history made entertaining

I read this book a few years back and am enjoying it just as much this time through on audio. The narrator is incredible. The Oil-For-Food program is in the dim past for me, and a great reminder of the greed, bureaucratic bungling and often very funny office politics and personalities behind the scenes. I just read online about the movie, but can't imagine it will be as good as the book, skeptic that I am.

An incredible, perspective changing, listen

Soussan's brilliant text is performed extremely well Maxwell Hamilton, who, (despite one questionable Australian accent for the head of the Australian Wheat Board) is great. The text itself is such an insight into the laughable world of lies, deceit and bigoted egos that block those with true passion and determination to change the lives of people who need it most. My personal favourite parts of the text - when Soussan explains how incredibly smart Saddam was, albeit shockingly corrupt, to mastermind the downfall of integrity of most first world countries of the world and the U.N. Members and chairmen of countries you wouldn't believe would partake in dodgy dealings are the first to be whistle-blown by Soussan; Not just the US and Russia - but Australia, France, New Zealand and plenty of others are all in on it.

Cracking yarn. An absolute must.

Interesting, well read and quite eye opening

Very interesting, and jauntily read with some wry humour, without getting into a huge blame game or cynicism at the end.

touching and inspiring!

This is what happens when someone chooses to get involved in someone else's life rather than just continue on with the ease of retirement and comfortable living well-earned.

The author notices a young boy hanging out in a diner for many hours on end and takes an interest. The boy is blind and one leg is shorter than the other. Spending so much time alone has stunted his social skills also, so people shy away from him. His caretaker grandmother lives hand to mouth, and has no resources to give him more.

The crux is not about solving problems with money (although that always helps), but rather getting to know people and really caring. Many lives were changed for the better as a result of this man's odd curiosity about a little, strange boy. Retirement didn't end up as he had planned, but he wouldn't trade it for the world.

The story is heartening and touching, but is written a tad amateurishly, hence the loss of one star. The narration is wonderful, the narrator perfectly delivering the man's age and temperament. This is a delightful story to warm the cockles of your heart.

Inspirational

This was a good book about a boy and man who change each others life. the narrator was good the story did lose some of appeal because it became too sappy. Made me feel like I was reading those chicken soup books. the best part was I Google's HK found video, soo cool. Don't do this til after book. you'll spoil the book.

Slow to Start But Picks Up Brilliantly

What did you love best about The Outrun?

The narrator's recovery among her native Orkney islands. She made recovery a combo of hard work, being one with nature, and the healing power of the sea

What did you like best about this story?

It didn't grab me from the first - her alcoholism and downward spiral were dull and uninspiring. She told me nothing new. But her return home really picked up the pacing of the book. Counting the birds was terrific.

The narrator of course.

Life on the Orkneys. I may visit.

Oh, the Merry Dancers!

There was a level of honesty reached with the writing of this memoir that must have been difficult to put to paper. That, I admire. Among the brutal honesties are details of living beauties she seeks in place of the drink. What a beautiful journey through the recovery process!

Overall, a well written and read book.

Hearing about some of Amy's experiences with depression and some of her thoughts, I can relate to.

Overall, this book is well written and read and I found her journey to becoming and remaining sober interesting, but I found it a little boring at the end and I feel awkward saying that about a story that is actually real life.

An important listen, but a little haphazard

Dealing with an addiction is no mean feat, it's an illness as Amy Liptrot explains in this memoir where she battles alcoholism. Some of the incidents are truly horrifying, not because of what she does to herself, but more so what the illness does to her and as a result her life spirals downwards. And while that part I can truly engage with, the random long explanations about her newfound passions for astronomy, sea and bird life seems to go off in a tangent.

You can definitely recognise her addictive personality manifesting in new hobbies, and obsessing in the same way. And at least that's healthier, but as a reader, I seemed to lose concentration on her rural lifestyle. Very good insight into mental health and addiction though.

Phenomenal!

I absolute loved this book! The messages it gives are so meaningful for anyone in any human service, education, or really any other job position. Empathy, understanding, and listening are things that everyone should take more time to do.

Don't give on them!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The perseverance of this principal is needed is needed in certain areas of our country. Her desire for the students became their desire for themselves. Sometimes you don't know what you want until others show you the possibilities.

Ms. Lopez's /Mott Hall Bridges story is incredible

I bought the hard cover book, audible book. I loved it and couldn't put it down! I underlined a lot of text in that book! I am recommending this book to everyone that will listen to me! Excellent all the way around!

I read this book years ago and it was a real eye opener. I listened to it again as I have been a caretaker several times since then and I really appreciate the care given by the selfless nurses. The author is truly an example of how all nurses should treat their patient's.

A revealing insight into a chemo nurse perspective

Having been a cancer patient and chemo recipient myself I found this book answering many of the questions I had about my angel nurses and their side of my treatment. All of my nurses, from the time of my diagnosis, surgery and chemo were kind, caring and supportive. This book was well written and the narrator was excellent. I love books written in the first person speaking the truth of their experiences and feelings of the events from their own perspective. I couldn't put it down.

Beautiful and personal book that pulls back the curtain of motherhood

This book made me feel like I had an insider's view of a mother's world. I felt lucky to experience such a personal and vulnerable story - reading thoughts and feelings that we are never able to know about other people unless they share honestly and openly. I watched a mother grow and learn as she raised her three children - and in doing so, I learned from her lessons and experiences. Bergen's writing stye was so enthralling that I enjoyed every page, even when the topics were difficult and honest. At the end of the book, I literally turned it over and started reading from the beginning, appreciating it from a different angle.

What a fantastic read -- buy for yourselves and for family and friends.

Nuggets of Wisdom

I really enjoyed the nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout this book. This truly is the advice you wish your mom told you. It's an inspiration to do the same for my children. Most of her single liners are spot on. There were moments I got a little lost in the story telling but the author still hits you with an amazing takeaway every few paragraphs. Love!
