    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 58 mins

    Publisher: Novel Audio

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A gripping memoir of friendship with a tragic twist - two childhood best friends diverge as young adults, one woman is brutally murdered and the other is determined to uncover the truth about her wild and seductive friend.
As girls growing up in rural New Jersey in the late 1980s, Ashley and Carolyn had everything in common: two outsiders who loved spending afternoons exploring the woods. Only when the girls attended different high schools did they begin to grow apart. While Carolyn struggled to fit in, Ashley quickly became a hot girl: popular, extroverted, and sexually precocious.
After high school, Carolyn entered college in New York City and Ashley ended up in Los Angeles, where she quit school to work as a stripper and an escort, dating actors and older men, and experimenting with drugs. The last time Ashley visited New York, Carolyn was shocked by how the two friends had grown apart. One year later, Ashley was stabbed to death at age twenty-two in her Hollywood home.
The man who may have murdered Ashley - an alleged serial killer - now faces trial in Los Angeles. Carolyn Murnick traveled across the country to cover the case and learn more about her magnetic and tragic friend. Part coming-of-age story, part true-crime mystery, The Hot One is a behind-the-scenes look at the drama of a trial and the poignancy of searching for the truth about a friend's truly horrifying murder.

    Surprising
As one other reviewer mentioned, this is not exactly "true crime".That being said, it's subtitle is a *memoir* of friendship, sex, and murder--that part rings true. I was expecting this book to go more into the court proceedings, evidence, etc (much like a normal true crime book) but was actually pleasantly surprised by the memoir-style of writing.
Although I didn't get what I had anticipated, I really liked listening to this one. Hillary Huber is always a fantastic narrator and her voice lent well to this material. I found that the author was putting into words many thoughts I've had but haven't been able to articulate; especially those regarding female friendship stemming from childhood. A lot to think on.
    The Smart One
This is definitely NOT just a true crime tale, more of a memoir about female friendship and grief. If you're looking for a gripping whodunit, this isn't exactly it. But, if you want to give it a chance, it's worth it. I found the perspectives on long (stemming from childhood) female friendship incredibly accurate; she put things into words that I've felt but never expressed. Her grieving process and the way she handles her best friend's murder remind me a little of Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking". I teared up a few times, as things hit close to home. And though I would've enjoyed more details about the murder case and the suspect's subsequent prosecution, if you head into this not expecting too much of that, it is still enjoyable.
I received a free copy of this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I'm surprised more people don't like this
I read a review of this on Refinery29, which is what enticed me to purchase it.

    Publisher's Summary:
An astonishing memoir of redemption - the moving story of a former top NBA player who miraculously rebounded from a monumental fall thanks to hard work and his deep, transformative faith.
Sixteen years ago Vin Baker was an NBA All-Star, an Olympic Gold medalist, and a multimillionaire. While he excelled on the court, Vin harbored a dark secret: a dependency on drugs and alcohol that began after the clean-cut preacher's son turned pro. Eventually becoming a full-blown yet functional alcoholic, Vin convinced himself he played better under the influence - until his addiction cost him his basketball career, his fortune, and his health.
But Vin's story isn't a tragic fall from grace. It is a joyous tale of salvation. For Vin, hitting rock bottom was a difficult yet transformative experience that led him to renew his relationship with God and embrace life in a rich and fulfilling new way. Today the manager of a Starbucks and a youth minister, Vin has found more security and happiness in his ordinary working life than in all his years in the glamorous world of professional basketball.
God and Starbucks is a wise and unflinching look at the real dangers of addiction and the importance of taking charge of your life with meaning and purpose. It's a powerful memoir about reaching the top and beginning again from the bottom - an inspiring personal tale of humility and grace that reminds us what is truly important in our lives.

    Fascinating Story
An incredible story. Definitely not a professional writer. But a great perspective into a world the general public doesnt know much about.
    Wow!
This was a !!! What a story of overcoming struggle. I laughed a lot too.
A story that doesn't quite make sense
I am happy that Vin has turned a corner but this book wasn't the best.
It tells his story but it's not a tell all, and he doesn't talk enough about his journey out other than thanking God but doing it in a Bible Belt sort of platitude way.
I wish he aimed more directly at a topic than just spraying all over.
It's good, not great, and it's not bad if you enjoy sports. Otherwise it's just "meh"
    Familiar Story with Inspiring Ending
Where does God and Starbucks rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It is not the best audiobook I have listened to but the narrator's great storytelling made this a great listen.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Vin Bakers father was my favorite character because he plays such a big part in his life and he always remained a pillar of support for him.
Which character as performed by Arnell Powell was your favorite?
Arnell Powell is so talented he made every character a favorite.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The part where Vin describes his lowest point living alone and drinking all day. This part was just depressing and painful, at times it made me want to stop listening. Arnell Powell can make the listener feel like he or she is the one in that situation.
    Any additional comments?
    Great book.
    Very interesting story

Title: Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight
Subtitle: A young man's voice from the silence of autism
Author: Naoki Higashida, David Mitchell - translator, Keiko Yoshida - translator
    Narrator: David Mitchell, Thomas Judd
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-11-17
    Publisher: Sceptre
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Following his groundbreaking international best seller The Reason I Jump, written when he was only 13, Naoki Higashida offers equally illuminating and practical insights into autism from his current perspective as a young man.
Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight is Naoki Higashida's gently subversive follow-up to his phenomenally popular book The Reason I Jump, which he wrote as a 13-year-old boy with severe autism. Now he shares his thoughts and experiences as a young man, exploring a range of topics from education, identity, family and society to personal growth. He has also written an enigmatic story, 'A Journey', especially for this edition, which is introduced by David Mitchell (cotranslator with Keiko Yoshida). Part memoir, part critique of a world that sees disabilities ahead of disabled people, it opens a window into the mind and world of an autistic, nonverbal young adult, providing remarkable insights into autism in general.
    Members Reviews:
    Most enlightening read
This book gives one an insight into the life of one very courageous young man and shows the power of love and acceptance.
    Help us out!
This is a sensational document which could lead to a significant shift in how non-verbal autistic people (in Naoki Higashidas words neuro-atypicals) are treated. Hagashidas writing (carried out laboriously by means of an alphabet board) is introduced by the novelist David (Cloud Atlas) Mitchell who translated Fall Down 7 Times, Get up 8 with his Japanese wife Keiko Yoshida. The Mitchells intense involvement with Higashidas writing springs from their experience of raising an autistic non-verbal son who displays the same epic meltdowns and ferocious head-banging as Higashida has done. With Thomas Judd, David Mitchell reads the work with skill and empathy so that although this is a translation, you can belive this is Hagashidas voice.
What Higashida shows through his writing is that the Japanese term for autism which translates as self-locked-up disease is wrong. Now nineteen, he talks to us directly, asking for our understanding and advising us how we can reach and best help people like him. Perhaps his strongest message is: dont think that because we cant communicate in words that we are incapable of comprehension talk to us. Mitchell took this advice and spoke to his son normally with great improvements in his autistic behaviours. Higashida leads us inside his head so that we can understand how complex the world is for him; how meltdowns and sleeve-biting are signs of his anger and frustrations with himself; how he is not closed in and unimaginative and incapable of empathy as is generally thought, and people need to see that despite the apparently useless strangled sounds he makes, he is open, grievously isolated and lonely, kind, loving and deeply appreciative of his family. The moment he manages after years to say buy and carnation to his carer by painstakingly joining links in his brain and so give his mother a Mothers Day gift is very moving.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the indigenous cultures of Central America, what western medicine terms a mental illness is understood as signaling the birth of a healer or shaman. Mental disorders are viewed as spiritual emergencies that require support from sages in the community who understand the connection we have to the spirit realm. A shaman walks the thin line of insanity and bliss. There is nothing casual about how this calling presents itself. Those who become shamans must make a sacrifice: The mind must be rewired in order to make room for the soul. This is what happened to Lori Morrison several years ago.
Upon the death of her husband of 23 years, American-born Lori found herself living alone on the edge of a volcanic crater lake in El Salvador in contact with the spirits of hundreds of Mayans trapped beneath the waters waiting to be set free by her. In the throes of a full-blown mental crisis, she went from hospital ER to locked ward, to a daring adventure in the jungles of Colombia, where a team of local brujos helped her complete her transition into the role she currently plays as a healer and spiritual counselor. It is a powerful memoir of a woman coming to recognize herself and gifts that she has previously rejected so she may fulfill her destiny.

    A wild spiritual journey!
Superbly written and narrated, this audiobook tells the compelling story of the tumultuous events following the death of Loris dear husband, Tino, after his gradual decline in health. It is told from an intimate personal perspective of what it is like to answer yes to a psychiatrist asking Do you hear voices inside your head? After cycling in and out of the psychiatric care system, she is guided to healers who help her realize her souls purpose. And what a purpose it is! All I will say is that it involves Mayans, shamans, butterflies, and jaguar spirit guides, but I dont want to spoil your enjoyment of the enthralling tale of her transformation and the scope of what she learns about life, death and beyond. Definitely the most fascinating and moving true-life story of clairvoyance, out-of-body experience (OBE), and afterlife that I have read so far. Inspiring and uplifting, but not preachy, it will appeal to religious and non-religious readers. Well worth 1 credit and 8+ hours!

    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 48 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A funny and intimate look at fatherhood from the actor and writer/director of The Boss and Tammy that combines stories about his own larger-than-life dad and how his experiences raising two daughters with his wife, Melissa McCarthy, are shaped by his own childhood.
Though he's best known for his appearances in the movie Enough Said, as well as his hilarious role as Air Marshall Jon in Bridesmaids, Ben Falcone isn't a big-shot movie star director at home. There, he's just Dad. In this winning collection of stories, Ben shares his funny and poignant adventures as the husband of Melissa McCarthy and the father of their two young daughters. He also shares tales from his own childhood in Southern Illinois and life with his father - an outspoken, brilliant, but unconventional man with a big heart and a somewhat casual approach to employment named Steve Falcone.
Ben is just an ordinary dad who has his share of fights with other parents blocking his view with their expensive electronic devices at school performances. Navigating the complicated role of being the only male in a house full of women, he finds himself growing more and more concerned as he sounds more and more like his dad. While Steve Falcone may not have been the briefcase and gray flannel suit type, he taught Ben priceless lessons about what matters most in life. A supportive, creative, and downright funny dad, Steve made sure his sons' lives were never dull - a sense of adventure that carries through this warm, sometimes hilarious, and poignant memoir.
Foreword read by Melissa McCarthy and featuring the voices of Stephen, Margaret, and Flynn Falcone.

Laughed My Ass Off AND Learned Key Life Lessons!
Would you consider the audio edition of Being a Dad Is Weird to be better than the print version?
No but you really get great comedy flavor from the voices! (Note: Mr. Falcone is a comedic actor so as you might imagine his narration is terrifically funny.)
What other book might you compare Being a Dad Is Weird to and why?
    There is no other.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Let's put it this way, I'm a nature lover but you'll never catch me on Ocracoke Island.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Many, but "Choose Happy, and It Is a Choice" sure goes a long way.
    Any additional comments?
An authentic, heartfelt, wise, and extremely hilarious account of Mr. Falcone's upbringing at the hand of his larger-than-life father Steve in the sleepy college town of Carbondale, IL, and his subsequent adventures as a celebrity dad in LA. I'm a big fan of comedy memoirs, but this one had more startlingly odd, insightful, and laugh-out-loud moments than I'd previously read or heard. In learning about Ben's laudable life fueled by the wonderful lessons imparted by his dad, I somehow came to know quite a bit more about what's most important in my own. Highly recommended!
    So disappointing
I was so excited to listen to this book. I think Ben and Melissa are hilarious. But it was boring. I just kept waiting and waiting and waiting for something to be funny. Never happen.

    Publisher's Summary:
In a real-life version of Little Big Man comes Indian captive narrative of Herman Lehmann. He was captured as a boy in 1870 and lived for nine years among the Apaches and Comanches. Long considered one of the best captivity stories from the period, Lehmann came to love the people and the life. Only through the gentle persuasion of famed Comanche chief, Quanah Parker, was Lehmann convinced to remain with his white family once he was returned to them.
Lehmann saw some of the most dramatic changes in the western United States from a perspective few whites had. He didn't just play the part...he was living as an Indian. His struggle to readjust to white culture is detailed here as well. At the time of this writing, he was married with five children, although he maintained the ties to his Indian friends and family for the rest of his life.
Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the movement that changed the country forever.

Poignant and insightful, Always by My Side is an inspiring book that explores the unbreakable bond between man and dog, how faith shapes our love for our dogs, and how our dogs shape our faith.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent book.
Edward Grinnan is a gifted writer and I would probably buy any book he writes. This one is about the dogs in his life and who doesn't love a good book about "man's best friend".
Tears Down My Cheeks and Landing by My Side
This is a very emotion-spawning book. One thing I hate about dog books is that they usually end with the dog dying. Well, this book has about 8 different dogs in it, so prepare to cry. The author skips forward and backward in time; I understand he was connecting stories, but it was slightly annoying. It was a good book to read as long as you were prepared for the alternating emotions.
but I love it so far
I'm still reading this, but I love it so far.
Edward Grinnan writes to the point and makes it fun to get you through the hard times of the book (when a beloved pet dies).

    Release date: 01-17-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 19 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A beautiful, heartrending literary memoir about the tragic death of the author's beloved older sister and a tribute to their bond.
When Sheila Kohler was 37, she received the heart-stopping news that her sister Maxine, only two years older, was killed when her husband drove them off a deserted road in Johannesburg. Stunned by the news, she immediately flew back to the country where she was born, determined to find answers and forced to reckon with his history of violence and the lingering effects of their most unusual childhood - one marked by death and the misguided love of their mother.
In her signature spare and incisive prose, Sheila Kohler recounts the lives she and her sister led. Flashing back to their storybook childhood at the family estate, Crossways, Kohler tells of the death of her father when she and Maxine were girls, which led to the family abandoning their house and the girls being raised by their mother, at turns distant and suffocating. We follow them to the cloistered Anglican boarding school where they first learn of separation and later their studies in Rome and Paris where they plan grand lives for themselves - lives that are interrupted when both marry young and discover they have made poor choices. Kohler evokes the bond between sisters and shows how that bond changes but never breaks, even after death.
    Members Reviews:
    Magical & Haunting
What Sheila Kohler has done is quite magical - moving backwards and forwards in time and hovering in between.
"Once We Were Sisters" is haunting and exquisitely written, a sensual and brave book about love.
It is rare for a writer to be so gifted as both a fiction and memoir writer, but Sheila Kohler is that writer.
    Gorgeous and stark
I've long been a fan of Sheila Koehler' writing. She was a professor of mine at graduate school and I've always admired her sleek voice. Every line, every paragraph and page of this book is stripped down to the most beautifully elemental. It was wonderful to read this and think about how these real and tragic events of her life have worked their way into her novels and short stories over the years. Beautiful!
Memoir of privilege and pain resounds with love and regret
This memoir is primarily one of domestic abuse, resulting ultimately in the wife's death - in the view of the author, sister of the dead woman. A subsidiary yet striking feature is the dysfunction in at least two prior generations of the author's family. The story unfolds in the setting of an upper class family in Johannesburg, South Africa, where lives are both shaped and compromised by events in that country in the second half of the twentieth century; additional scenes in Europe provide insights into the family's wealth and privilege. The sisters' bond is strong, and is the source of the author's need for revenge in the telling of this inevitable tragedy so many decades later. The writing is spare, preventing any sense of the lurid. Sheila Kohler has written many novels, some based on isolated events in this memoir; this book is proof of her ability to transcend the divide between fiction and reality.
    Sad and fascinating book!!!!
Sad memior of two sisters. Both married abusive men - one sister was physically abused and the other sister was emotionally abused by a cheating husband. Fascinating look at the lives of 2 children of wealthy parents who were neglected.

My heart feels so warm and full!
What did you love best about Free Days with George?
The memories of the grandfather, who in turn, advocated healing as a loving unit between man and dog without even being there in the physical sense.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Free Days with George?
The first surf. It was so exciting that I held my breath as I listened.
What about Rudy Sandas performance did you like?
He's a good reader in that he tells the story as if he is sitting across the table from the listener. He doesn't just read words.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the author's copilot warmed up to George, and that the author chose loving care, and safety even though his friend wasn't that excited about it. I chuckled the whole time while picturing the author in the jump seat-peering over the dash. LOL!!
I felt really sad after Jane (Doe, as I called her in my mind) went away. That night in the basement, and in the porch felt so raw and hollow. Very gut-wrenching.
    Wonderful
    I completely enjoyed this book. Not only the fear, humor, patience and heart that comes into saving another as well as saving yourself;
but also the story behind the story. the reality that need each other and it really takes is love.

Sager has undergone three stem cell transplants - with his son as the donor for two of them - and more than 20 chemotherapy cycles since his diagnosis.
In Living Out Loud, Craig Sager shares incredible stories from his remarkable career and chronicles his heroic battle. Whether he's sprinting across Wrigley Field midgame as a college student with cops in pursuit, chasing down Hank Aaron on the field for an interview after Aaron broke Babe Ruth's home run record, running with the bulls in Pamplona, or hunkering down to face the daunting physical challenges of fighting leukemia, Craig Sager is always ready to defy expectations, embrace life, and live it to the fullest. Including a foreword by Charles Barkley and with unique insight and narration from Craig's son, Craig Sager II, this entertaining, honest, and introspective account of a life lived in sports reveals the enduring lessons Sager has learned throughout his career and reminds you to always look at the bright side, no matter what life throws at you.

    Craig Sager will inspire you!
If you are a sports fan you will thoroughly enjoy hearing about Craig Sager's charmed life. How he made a living out of his passion - being a sports fanatic - is inspiring! His struggle with AML is very sobering but he doesn't want you to pity him. The book makes you celebrate his life and to want to live your own with the same passion and optimism.
