Publisher's Summary:
Picture the worst boss you ever had.
Some or all of the following terms will probably come to mind: self-centered, liar, autocratic, has favorites, bullies, doesn't listen, dismisses your ideas, etc.
Then think of the best boss you ever had.
You will probably think of qualities such as the following: honest, keeps you in the loop, treats everyone the same, treats you with respect, wants your ideas on how to improve things, cares about you and your co-workers, good communicator, etc.
What these lists show is that what makes someone a bad or good boss is not their technical skill or job-related knowledge, though both are important.
What makes them a good or bad boss are the behaviors we call a person's character.
The better our character, the better manager we will be.
We can improve our character, and thereby improve our organization's effectiveness and productivity as well as our job satisfaction.
Now is the time to start!

Improve Your Character for Better Results as a Manager
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would put this book on my âmust read listâ for aspiring public service professionals. The book provides a concise formula, including how-to suggestions for self-improvement, to guide the manager. Robert Beezat blends academic, philosophical, and practical principles to show how character influences success as a manager. He draws upon his experience as a local government and non-profit manager, along with hundreds of management consulting assignments, to synthesize these principles. From the academic sphere, Beezat relies upon Henri Fayol who extols that âmoral characterâ.determines the quality of decisions.â The author reflects on the limits of a managerâs ability and philosophically discusses how a manager must recognize that for many factors, e.g., knowledge and certainty, there is a limit on the precision of managerial decision making. Beezatâs practical gems, based on his lifelong management experience, are sprinkled throughout the book and brought a smile to my face because his examples mirror some of my own. Fatherly advice to âdo it right the first timeâ reminded me of my fatherâs directive to âthink before you act.â
Beezat shows how actions and behaviors shape our characterâand how that character impacts our decisions and the success of the organizations and people that we manage.
