Publisher's Summary:

Years ago, Cliona - strong, proud, and practical - sailed for Boston, determined to one day come home. But when the time came to return to Inis Muruch, her daughter Grace - fierce, beautiful, and brazenly sexual - resented her mother's isolated, unfamiliar world. Though entranced by the sea and its healing powers, Grace became desperate to escape the confines of the island, one day stealing away with her small daughter, Grainne.

Now Grainne, motherless at 15 after Grace's death from breast cancer - is about to be taken back across the ocean by Cliona, repeating the journey her mother was forced to make years before. She goes to meet a father she has never known, her heart pulled between a life where she no longer belongs to a family she cannot remember. On the rocky shores of Inis Muruch, she waits for her father, and begins to discover her own sexual identity, even as she struggles to understand the forces that have torn her family apart.

In her first novel, Lisa Carey has crafted voices so real and passionate that they will resonate within the listener long after the last words are heard.

Critic Reviews:

"A wonderfully, vividly written account of the love...between mothers and daughters....illuminates the ways that love fails us and then, as we are about to sink, reaches out and sets us back afloat." (The Washington Post)

Title: Ascension

Author: Douglas D. Brown

Narrator: Jerry Sciarrio

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 40 mins

Language: English

Release date: 03-13-08

Publisher: Books in Motion

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

In 1995 Ben Jones is a fifth-year senior at East Central Louisiana University in Ascension, Louisiana. While trying to graduate from college, he naively runs for the legislature to fill a government-studies requirement. But Ben still doesn't know what he wants to do with his life.

Ben's opponent, Jack Tassin, is the 16-year incumbent. Tassin thought he would be elected unopposed after his main opponent was implicated in a prostitution scandal. However, Tassin's heart is not in the election. His wife is ill and cannot campaign with him as she has in the past four elections. Since he has not been as visible recently, he's also alienated some of his supporters. For Tassin, only one question remains: How far is he willing to go to win the campaign?

After months of vote buying, intimidation, and pulpit pounding, along with some good old-fashioned college debauchery, the candidates are ready for an election day gutter brawl that pits age against youth, experience against idealism, cynicism against innocence, and appearance against reality.

Publisher's Summary:

Neve Halloran and her daughter have shared a fierce love for the austere beauty of Rhode Island's South County ever since Neve guided Mickey's first baby steps along the sandy shore. Now, with Mickey a teenager and Neve's last hope for happiness with her daughter's loving but unstable father gone, both will struggle to make a new life together amid the windswept landscape that sustains them.

As winter gives way to spring, and spring to summer, a secret will emerge that has lain buried in the depths just offshore for decades, a secret that will galvanize the small seaside community. For the waters bear their own vestige of the past, and their ceaseless rhythms may point the way to hope and new beginnings.

Lyrical, luminous, and utterly captivating, The Edge of Winter is Luanne Rice at her most penetrating and insightful, in a moving exploration of the bonds that shape us and set us free.

"Once again Rice weaves together an involving tale of love, loss, and redemption, then deepens the story with a resonant appreciation for nature." (Booklist)

"Rice...draws her cast of appealing characters sharply...and her significant storytelling skills are fully deployed." (Publishers Weekly)
