Most enjoyable read
Fabulous book from everybody's favorite TV gardener. Had to finish in one sitting.
An absolute charmer!
Why has this book not received more reviews? What is wrong with you readers out there? You don't know what you are missing, but I am going to tell you!
Lighthouses have been "un-manned" now for a good number of years and what a pity for the hardy souls who lived in them and remained on duty through thick and thin. My own husband applied to be a lighthouse keeper back in the early 1960s, but fortunately for me, his application to migrate to Australia as a "ten pound POM" was accepted before he could have his job interview.
Alan Titchmarsh has beautifully crafted the gentle story of a lonely man for whom one lifestyle is complete and a woman embarking on a new life.
Will Elliot is sad that his time as a lighthouse keeper has come to an end, as it has been a comfort to him for six years, but he is also looking forward to buying a boat and sailing around Britain. Imagine his surprise when he buys a forlorn motor vessel with a glorious past and makes new friends, which may put his plans in jeopardy.
Integrated into the life of the community - which he has managed to avoid while working shifts on the lighthouse - Will is reluctantly drawn into a mystery and confronts a tragedy, all within the space of a few short weeks.
This unassuming book is superbly written; the characters finely drawn and immensely likable. I was drawn into the lives of those on the coast of Cornwall, didn't want the experience to end and will keep this book in my shelf for a return reading in a couple of years. Needless to say, I have recommended it to my husband.
Congratulations, Mr Titchmarsh, and I shall immediately start searching for more of your books.
