Sometimes horror stories are real!
The story opens with Chris and his friends who have all just graduated from high school. The boys have now reached a cornerstone in their lives and are ready to have a little fun before the whole adulthood thing kicks in. There are rumors of a junkie squatter living in an abandoned housing project and they decide to check it out.
Oh, the mistakes we make as kids can follow us for a lifetime. There is indeed a junkie living in one of the homes and as disgusted as Chris finds himself viewing this man's living conditions there is also a curiosity. What could cause someone to be so drawn into a life of drugs that he can't walk away?
I'm sure some of us has experienced this sense of invincibility, the... "Oh no, not me! I am stronger than that." type of attitude. But, alas, it doesn't always work in our favor.
The story reads as a bit of a 'coming of age tale' with dire consequences. It is one that may make you reflect on your own choices in life and perhaps thank God you didn't follow through on all of them. If you know anyone that has or if you yourself have suffered from addiction then you know it is not something you can just walk away from. It is a life sentence that will always be beckoning you.. just one more time.
Addicting!
Wow! What a story! Do not start this book unless you have at least an hour to spare. This story will grip you, immediately, from the prologue until the very end. (I started this book at 11 last night, figuring that I would read a chapter or two, before bed... Needless to say, I was riveted to the story and just had to finish it.)
This story is as addicting as its subject matter, and just like the habit, you want to stop (reading) but you can't!
I love everything about this book, from the cover (designed by Lutzke himself) to the Chapter Headings (very revealing in their downward spiral).
I will definitely be reading more of Lutzke's work!
Addicted to Chad's work
Chad Lutzke blew me away with his last book, Of Foster Homes and Flies. I knew this book would be a worthy follow up. Chad has become one of those authors that you watch their release dates. You base the length of what you read around that date. You make sure you are free the day a new release comes out. Wallflower did not disappoint and I'll be watching and planning for Chad's next book.
Chris is full of curiosity. He doesn't have much going on in his life after graduating high school. He has a few friends, no job, and parents that seem to either not care or want him gone. When he and his friends run across a junkie, Chris feels that curiosity itch. How does a person get like this? What does the Heroin feel like? Chris knows he can scratch that itch and come out of it fine. Just one try. Just once. Then, he'll walk away.
Powerful. Moving. Bleak. We can sit here all day throwing out words to describe this book. Whatever words come to mind when you read it, I'm sure you'll agree with these words: A great book by a great author.
I really liked this book.
I did, I really liked it. Even though thought I could see what was coming, it was like driving by a wreck, you couldn't turn away.
