Not nearly as good as I remembered; still worth a read if you're into dystopian fiction.
So, it doesn't measure up to my memory of reading it in the 80's. It's terribly sexist, rambling, and strangely, the characters aren't all that memorable. Still, it stuck in my mind for 30 years, so I guess that says something.
For creativity and world-building, I'll give it 4 stars. For character development and style, it gets a 2. Frankly, the plotting and writing was careless, left me skimming pages. A concise editing could have fixed this.
If you enjoy dystopian fiction, I suppose it's a must-read, but you have to temper it with Sherri Tepper or Margaret Atwood, lest you believe the heros of the future are exactly the same as the heros of the past - men who lust after breasts attached to brainless beauties - only with newfangled weapons.
Excellent novel (but don't mistake this for the comic book version)
This rating is for the book (novel), and NOT for the item as listed on Amazon at the time of purchase. A long-time fan of this book, I met Nolan recently (WFC2013) - fantastic guy, full of stories about the inception of this book with GCJ. He went on to mention the Blue Water comic book edition, which he praised highly, and so I want in search of it. Happening upon this hardback, and after reviewing the contents via the Amazon "Look Inside" function, I promptly purchased and waited for delivery. When it arrived, I was disappointed to find it was not the comic book version. Whilst the "Look Inside" blurb clearly states the preview was of the paperback edition, I had no reason to believe the contents of the hardback would be any different. I was wrong - there does not appear to be a hardback version of the comic book. That said, this is a fantastic book - it has long been rumoured that there may be a remake of the film (which though flawed, I also loved) - I look forward to that, but in the meantime, strongly advise that you purchase and read the novel first.
Not bad
Iâm old enough to have seen the original movie back in the day. This short comic brought back a memory or two. Enjoyed the artwork and sketches attached. Had me thinking of âCarousel.â
If you have the original Kindle, download the Kindle app to your computer, tablet or phone so you can capture all the colors.
Not too bad.
Three Stars
Great book short read Utopia or dystopia?
I read this book in high school and although it was a bit strange then, I re-read it for a graduate work entrance exam and comparison study. It is a strange read, but really good, well worth the short read a mere 148 pages. That's a one sitter for most readers. For me thought it took me two days, as I have a life and many other things that get in the way of three to four hours straight, that it would take to read this book.
