Made me ponder!
The author does a great Job analysing what values we humans should comprise of. The book is highly philosophical and in a seemingly nice manner. Will definitely leave you pondering and reflecting on your own life/values.
What a great 'reference' of morality
What a great 'reference' of morality, nicely compiled, in alphabetical order no less!
Much has been written on ethics, morality, values, etc. This book sort of compiles, in short, simple-to-follow excerpts, everything and anything you may have ever read on the subject. A great book for morning coffee, I can't think of a better way to start the day. Imagine what a world we would have if everyone was even just interested in this topic, let alone this wonderful book.
Thoughtful and Well done
I was really impressed with the Book of Values. Obviously, the author spent a lot of time researching, studying, and pondering what values mean to us as human beings. Also, I was impressed by the number of topics (values) that she addressed. I especially like the fact that at the top of each of the values she included a notable quote that set the stage for what she would be writing about. Also, she included many references in the body of the topics themselves, ones that added a lot of credence to her observations. I found, too, that the values explicated were filled with pragmatic and philosophical insights. Thus, I would highly recommend The Book of Values if you are searching for a reference on the importance of values themselves and insight into how those values can be applied to make us all more empathetic and effective human beings.
The Book of Values Shows the Way
Some books are meant to be read and savored in one sitting. This book is not one of those. In 172 pages the author has spanned the most relevant moral, spiritual, intellectual and emotional constructs of human existence. Arranged in alphabetical order each value is placed into context with an appropriate quotation to reinforce the idea and to ponder further. Each value deserves more than cursory contemplation. This is a book to read one value at a time as if a missal. The reader may start any place and jump from value to value without losing the basic message of the book. The author must be complimented in producing a work that deserves reading again and again. I say this is a must have and read book.
Useful and Inspiring
In this remarkable compendium, Yal Eylat-Tanaka has assembled no less than 140 moral imperatives that apply to any civilized society. These values, listed alphabetically, run from Acceptance to Zeal, enhanced with Ethics, Graciousness, Impartiality, Silence (so often woefully missing) and Tact, among many others. With each value comes intelligent guidance as to how to achieve it. In some cases there are also appropriate quotations from such varied notables as Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Watson, and Salvador Dali.
