Publisher's Summary:
Almost everyone prays: believers, unbelievers, wannabe believers, and might-have-been believers. It assures us all in our many parts and many moods that everything is going to be okay, despite any evidence to the contrary. When people say ,I dont know how to pray, what they often mean is I dont believe. Or perhaps they are struggling with disappointment or anger with God and have taken a break from their prayer life. This book is written to remove these obstacles to prayer and to show how honest prayer doesnt require belief or trust, nor does it need constant satisfaction. This book introduces new ways of prayer and thinking about what prayer is - to offer the reader a new experience, because sometimes our heart has a wisdom that our head does not. Whether you are someone who believes, hopes to believe, almost believes, or simply trusts that offering a prayer means something, this book is for you.

I love it for it is all-embracing as she prayed in very simple English for all different kinds of people in different types of situations.
not for your even evangelical christian
I was interested in what the author had to say, although I am Catholic and an ardent believer in prayer (mostly prayers of thanks, or when in despair). I am most definitively not a believer of praying to God to help a team win a sports game (I think it's demeaning to God). The author is senior minister at Judson Memorial Church (affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA and with the United Church of Christ) in Greenwich Village, New York City.
CHAPTERS:
1) Ordinary prayers when waking, when sleeping
2) Prayers for those who are too busy to pray
3) Prayers to calm the monkey's mind
4) Prayers for the great recession to recede
5) Road strengthening prayers for the commuting soul
6) Prayers for the broken heart
7) When hurt, ill or lost
8) For that which is other to us
9) Prayers for hatching, matching and dispatching
10) Prayers through the months and seasons
Still not sure? The Judson Memorial Church has a 14 minute video on youtube "Prayer for People Who Think They Can't" Rev. Dr. Donna Schaper Judson Memorial Church", that may help you decide to order or not.
I wanted to love it.
I wanted to love this more than I do. And there ARE things I love about it. I love that it is prayer book openly addressing the issue that one reason people don't pray is lack of belief...and presents the concept of moving toward prayer in the midst of doubt. Baby steps. That, I love.
However, in terms of both execution (the actual prayers listed) and organization, I feel it lacks the punch of true prayer weaponry.
I would to have a recommend instead for this.... The closest item I can come up with at the moment isEmergency Prayers: God's Help in Your Time of Need, which (though excellent) is not completely parallel. Instead, I find myself wishing for second edition of this book, and I hope the author (and editors) will make the attempt.
The power to become yourself
Donna Schaper explains the contents of this book as prayers for those who maybe believe.
