While Halleys Comet lit up Earths sky in 1835, Americas biggest literature star was born. Though Samuel Langhorne Clemens toiled in obscurity as a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi and to this day remains a name oft forgotten, that young man became famous around the globe under his unforgettable pseudonym, Mark Twain.
Although Twain spent the first 30 years of his life working odd jobs, his printing background, sharp wit, and humor helped establish him first as a journalist and later an author. His writing career took off in 1865 after his humorous short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was published. Newspapers enamored with his humorous accounts of his travels began hiring him to chronicle his trips through travelogues, such as The Innocents Abroad or The New Pilgrims' Progress and A Tramp Abroad.
Twains meteoric rise in literature took off in the 1870s with the publications of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Prince and the Pauper, novels that demonstrated Twains versatility, with Tom Sawyer capturing the essence of American childhood along the Mississippi and The Prince and the Pauper providing a biting social commentary that displayed Twains wit and humor. Those books were followed by Twains crowning achievement, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which combined the whimsical adventurousness of Tom Sawyer with social commentary about American culture and its treatment of blacks.

Factual review of Mark Twain's life
This history book in a 31 page, encyclopedic account of Mark Twain's life. Although its Reading Level may be for 7-9 year olds, in my opinion the Interest Level is not. It misses an opportunity to convey Mark Twain's personality and humor found by reading his books.
Ken Burns' American Lives series includes an excellent video summarizing Mark Twain's life. His successes and failures are shown through his interactions with family and business associates.
Great book.
I have a better understanding of Mark Twain and his life and his works. And I definitely recommend this book to others.
Some Things Never Change
Reading this biography I learned that the issues some people have with Mark Twain's works existed in his time. It just goes to show that Mark Twain was such a rabble rouser he can still get people upset and try to ban his works from public libraries centuries after his death.
Great eBook! As a homeschooling mom
Great eBook! As a homeschooling mom, I can never have enough books around for the kids to read. This was a great addition to our collection!
