    Title: I Know This Much
    Author: Gary Kemp
    Narrator: Gary Kemp
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-03-09
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
From schoolyard battles between the Bowie Boys and the Prog Rockers to Mrs Kemp's firm insistence on net curtains, from acting for the Children's Film Foundation to manning a fruit and veg stall on Saturdays, Gary brilliantly evokes an upbringing full of love, creativity and optimism.
As the Thatcher years begin, Gary's account of the outrageous London club scene centred around the Blitz and Billy's is just sizzling. Out of this glamorous mayhem of kilt-wearing mascara'd peacocks would emerge Spandau Ballet - the band that would define the era, and hold high the victorious standard of the New Romantics.
Gary's thrilling journey with Spandau Ballet would see them record worldwide hits such as True, Gold and Through the Barricades, play the biggest stadiums in the world, and take to the stage in togas when their luggage gets lost in flight. Stallions, supermodels and dwarves would be hired for video shoots, and through it all, Gary records the wonderful friendships, and the slowly-building tensions that would eventually see five old friends facing each other in court.
I Know This Much tells the story of Spandau Ballet, but it's far more than a book about being in a band. Whether it's meeting Ronnie Kray before filming The Krays, sketching out the fashions and subcultures of the day, or hanging out with Princess Diana, this book offers a story in every minute. And all the more so because it's all written - brilliantly - by Gary himself.
    Members Reviews:
A story of life and stardom
I attended the same school as Gary and other members of Spandau Ballet, but a few years later and after its relocation from Islington to Hertfordshire. The school stayed close to its roots and Gary's story resonates strongly and is told straightforwardly and lovingly, vis a vis friends, bandmembers, lovers and family. It made me laugh and cry in equal measure, although i doubt it was written or narrated to deliberately pull at the heartstrings. Being down to earth and honest conveyed the highs and lows more than any hyperbole could do. This is not just for Spandau Ballet fans, although the band is the obvious strong thread upon which the book is based. If you grew up in the 80's, or are curious about how music is made and promoted (Steve Dagger, the band's manager was quite a genius) or simply enjoy a good autobiography, you can enjoy this tale, as i did, very much.

Title: My Name is Daphne Fairfax
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Arthur Smith
    Narrator: Arthur Smith
    Format: Abridged
Length: 6 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-30-09
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In fact, he is neither Daphne or Arthur. Family and old friends know him as Brian.
Arthur Smith is best known as a comedian, a broadcaster and an opening bat for Grumpy Old Men. But he has also been a West End playwright (his plays include An Evening with Gary Lineker), an English teacher, a failed rock star, a busker, a road sweeper and a bombsite boy in post-war Bermondsey.
Smith was one of the 'alternative comedians' who shook up light entertainment in the eighties and remains a legend at the Edinburgh Festival fringe where he has been fêted and arrested. His rumbustuous drinking years ended in Intensive Care where he narrowly survived an attack of acute pancreatitis. He gave up drink and got diabetes but continues to perform, write and act in peculiar ways and delight his fans.
This memoir encompasses a range of extraordinary, funny and often moving experiences by a unique and individual commentator on the peculiarities of modern society.
    Members Reviews:
    An Unexpected Delight
As an inveterate Edinburgh Festival goer since the mid-1980's, Arthur Smith's (or Daphne Fairfax's) paths and my own have crossed many times. I've always thought that he was "OK" but not much more.
This erudite, charming and generally well read audio biog then, was a surprise. The major events in his life are already quite well known, but what makes this story stand out and be worth hearing, apart from being very well written, is the self deprecating but sincere tone he manages to set. His affectionate, yet honest portraits of the less well known people in his life (there is, as one would hope, plenty of name dropping too!) reveal a thoughtful man with a big heart and a clear understanding of his own failings.
I shall listen to this audiobook again, I know - and in that listening will discover delights missed at first hearing. I hope that he does an unabridged reading - not what I expected to write about a showbiz biog!
    what an interesting man!
    Any additional comments?
I always liked Arthur Smith but have only known him through his radio work, mainly Loose Ends. I didn't realise he wrote plays and had done so much stand up comedy. I thought his autobiography was very interesting, well written and well read. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. A clever, drunken!! but thoroughly nice man. A joy to listen to his life so far.
A funny old life for a funny old man
After being a little disappointed at my last listen to an autobiography I started to listen to this one with a little trepidation. However my fears were unfounded and I very much enjoyed listening to the gravelly voiced comedian tell me about his life. Like with other autobiographies by comedians, its not all funny and anecdotal and Mr Smith has not had all that easy in his quest for recognition (Steve Martin is another great example). But that said I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan or interested in the rise of alternative comedy.
    Nice one Arthur!
    Sad excuse for a biography.
    Any additional comments?
I hate saying this about someones story of there life but this guys book is just very Dull.I have been aware of arthur for many years and never been impressed with his comedy, I love stand up and this guy has been on my radar as someone to try and see more of as i assume its me thats not quite getting the "godfather" of comedy.I spotted his book and thought what a great way to find out more. Laugh? i never.

As foreclosure fragments her family, five-year-old Mildred and her three siblings find refuge with her grandparents - God-fearing farmers, enjoying a modest retirement. Makes you appreciate today's living
Love this story! Only reason I didn't give a 5 star is because some parts are better in the written forum. Recipes are hard to write down while I'm driving!! If people had grown up in this way of living, I believe the world would be a better place.
A glimpse of simpler times on an Iowa farm...
What made the experience of listening to Little Heathens the most enjoyable?
The narrator is perfection & really gets you involved in the story, a true re-telling of a girl growing up with her 3 siblings & her mother on her grandparent's farm in Iowa-along with a large extended family in the Great Depression. How they all 'made do' and had happy lives even through privation is amazing. Until late in the 30s, they had no electricity, no indoor plumbing, survived on food they raised/grew on the farm with the exception of coffee, sugar & salt. This is truly a case of the author passing through the fire and coming out 'refined to gold'. She takes us through to her marriage, her training as a teacher (she taught in a university for a while) and her thankfulness for the lessons she learned growing up in hard times.Very rewarding, interesting book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Mildred, the author of the story. She always made the best of the hand she was dealt, without grumbling. I felt as though I had found a new friend. The author must have been in her 80s when it was written & her memory is amazing. I doubt if I had been thrust into her life that I could have made such a success of it as she did. She discusses just about every facet of her life, which fascinated me, since I love social history, the little things that make up people's daily life. This is a social history that the younger generation would do well to listen to, since it is so different to the way we live today-like day and night. The people who survived the Great Depression are leaving us daily, so we should ask questions of our grandparents about this period in history before it is too late.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Hard to decide, but I think when the whole family got together to cook for a holiday or some special occasion & everyone helped, even the small children-the way they shared the work. There were chores for all but the smallest kids on the farm every day so everyone felt they were of help & had self-worth.

    Publisher's Summary:
For ten years Christian has dispensed his wisdom and advice to millions of lucky radio listeners on every topic conceivable. It was when he saw his wife reading and laughing at a book called How to Kill Your Husband that he realised he had to write this book.
In his sage opinion, men need to be saved from themselves. Women need to understand men better and stop hating them, and men need to make sense of why they are the way they are.
This book reveals some hard but hilarious truths about the male race. Who do men actually look to for inspiration? The Hoff? Simon Cowell? James Blunt? Why do men behave in that odd way at barbecues? Why can a man have his heart broken a thousand times by his football team and yet still forgive them more than he would a woman?
With his outspoken humour and his ironic take on life, Christian explores male-dom, celebrating all that is great about being a man and unravelling the mysteries of masculinity that have stumped women for centuries.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
better content, tired old re-hashed material.... different narrator, dull dull delivery
Would you be willing to try another one of Christian O'Connells performances?
    no
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    not really.
    Any additional comments?
very disappointed especially after reading all the positive reviews.if you have an ounce of sophistication you'll find this very tired and dull.
    Don't bother, its all cliches.
    Complete drivel.
I didn't need to know, that some people might take offense if you look at them whilst using a urinal in a public toilet.
Then there is the cliche of the man in charge of the barbeque.
The most important thing to me is not that I have my own chair in the living room.
Naturally he also listed who would be in his ideal football team...
You don't need this guy to tell you what is important in your life.

Length: 2 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 2 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Addictive listening, this is the story of the inexorable rise of this thing called celebrity, crammed with previously unheard of stories from the likes of Victoria and David Beckham, Kate Moss, Pete Doherty, Amy Winehouse, Britney Spears, Cheryl Cole, Jordan, Will Young, Teri Hatcher, and more.
In 2000, Mark was tasked with turning around the fortunes of an entertainment magazine that was just two months away from closure. He did it - by sweet-talking Victoria Beckham into giving him an interview and stealing a Robbie Williams exclusive from another magazine and essentially inventing the now familiar mix of celebrity photos, confessionals, rumour and gossip.
As celebrity obsession took hold of the nation sales of Heat topped 500,000 a week. Heat was there for the incredible rise and fall of Big Brother, and started the Size Zero debate. Tony Blair even agreed to appear topless in their pages. In green rooms and VIP lounges celebrities have confided in Mark, hurled abuse at him, and have been highly indiscreet in his presence. The Celeb Diaries is the exposé of the celebrity world.
    Members Reviews:
    Guilty Pleasure!
Just like the magazine that is the subject of this book, The Celeb Diaries is full of good tabloid fun. It's a fast-read that chronicles the British magazine Heat's rise in popularity through the 2000's in England. For those who don't know, Heat is like US Weekly here and that equals a chance for a little mental vacation for me. I would suggest that the stories and celebrities will probably only be interesting to Anglophiles because if Posh and Becks are the only British celebrities you can think of you probably could care less about Jordan, Big Brother, or the mag's rise from new to it's domination of OK! or Hello.
The only reason I took a star off is the horrendous copy editing for this book. I think it seems as though some attempts were made to American-ize the text (think metric system conversions), but they're so inconsistent they begin to stand out. There are also quite a few grammatical errors and words missing from sentences and I don't really care but it becomes a little distracting. Otherwise this is an amusing and smart book about a magazine I've gladly spent 10 dollars on at Borders which is insane I know. It's like getting a really thick copy Heat. Guilty Pleasure!
brilliant insight into a mad world
Intrigued by this era of celebrity. We are now used to the way celebrities tell all at almost every opportunity at the beginning of a career and then claim to be hounded when they have become estalished and have plenty of cash in the bank. I thought it would be great to read the inside story of those conversations and more importantly the arguements. Come on, everyone likes a bit of gossip! Brilliant read.
