Inspiring even if not what it claims to be
This is a very inspiring account of putting the creation of a classroom community and the building of character first in a way that brings amazing dividends in student growth. The author does not tell you that he is teaching a gifted class of Mexican and Asian immigrants but let's you think that he is dealing with all o the problem that a teacher of inner city youth deals with. Still, I came away with dozens of ideas for my 4th, 5th and 6th classroom by listening to this book.
I wish I had read this book at college.
Rafe takes you through a magical and captivating journey that will inspire the mind and touch the heart. What a book!!!
Good use of moral development theory
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. The author's use of Kohlberg's moral development as a classroom management/teaching strategy was inspiring. The actual writing was a little sloppy and not always politically correct in terms of characterizing certain groups of people.
What other book might you compare Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire to and why?
    None
Have you listened to any of James Yaegashis other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't know if I've heard other books by Yaegashi.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No
    Any additional comments?
The actual writing was substandard but the concepts and the reader were great.
Not really for high school teachers
There's a part about character development that is interesting and, as a high school English teacher, I found that part the part discussing English slightly helpful.
    Teaching gold
Rafe has re-energized me to believe again. Rafe has given me a new vision of what education can be and should be.

    Title: Bruce
    Author: Bruce Forsyth
    Narrator: Bruce Forsyth
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-07
    Publisher: Pan Macmillan Publishers Ltd.
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In the late 1950s, over half of Britain would tune into Sunday Night at the London Palladium, making Bruce a star in a few weeks. But it had been a long slog since his debut as 14-year-old "Boy Bruce the Mighty Atom" in 1942, then wartime work for the Red Cross and National Service after, and playing every theatre, concert party, summer season, double act, and review known to man. He's been at the very top ever since.
Bruce's first-ever account of his whole life is chock full of anecdotes, honest appraisals of tough times, failed marriages and affairs, comments on entertainment today, and what it takes to be a comedian at the height of his powers.
    Critic Reviews:
"In the gameshow of life, Brucie hasn't just won the TV, the golf clubs, and the hostess trolley. He's won the cuddly toy as well." (Mirror)

    Bruce
A good insight into the life of Bruce, with typical humour.
My only gripe is that he seems to catch a cold 2/3rds of the way through, and consequently his voice changes! Quite off putting.
    Bruce
I was a little disappointed with this . I have always liked Bruce Forsyth , particularly for his humour and cheerful attitude. He read this in a rather boring manner , as if he was reading off a list of his life's events with not much humour.
    Sketchy and incomplete
The narration of the book was poor. The volume changed quite dramatically at one point. The story was the basics of Bruce's life not to much information given. The bare essentials at best. And the ending was abrupt and a little confusing.,

    Publisher's Summary:
Having thrown away the rule book as a teenager, Johnnie has always made decisions from the heart. As a result, he has had a brilliantly colourful life, with more ups and downs than a roller-coaster ride. In this memoir, he reveals all about his time with Radio Caroline, his drug addiction, his fight against cancer and his spiritual awakening. Honest, passionate, and humorous, his autobiography will provide inspiring and entertaining listening to his millions of fans.
    Members Reviews:
An honest sincere and amusing account
I've listened to Johnnie Walker on and off since the late sixties, and I've always liked what he did and the way he did it.This is no different,he is very honest and sincere.I always wondered what happened in the States and why he came back, and now everything is explained in detail.he went through a lot and still stuck to his beliefs in life and music. There are a couple of things that puzzled me,one is that there was no mention of Man,s Fight for Freedom and that when he was telling the story about Caroline coming back in the eighties,he seems to have got it wrong.Maybe this is due to the book being abridged. All in all it is a very well written (read) book and very enjoyable.
    Candid, Interesting & Humbling
If you've ever listened to JW on the radio over any substantial period of time then you'll probably have an affection for him. Listening to this audiobook will only broaden that affection.
His account of his early days at Radio London & Radio Caroline through to his years at Radio's 1 & 2 are very interesting indeed. His(and his wife's) account of his illness and their fight to overcome it are candid, humbling and rewarding to the listener.
Listening to Johnnie tell his own story is something that I personally prefer over reading the book.
All in all, you realise that you were right all along about Johnnie Walker. He's the real deal!
A Must Listen! A Riveting Listen!
Johnnie Walker's writing style is just like his programmes - absorbing and as though he is the room with you telling his story! Cup of tea before you start?
Once the button on the iPod or the laptop was pressed, I could not stop listening.
How his name change occurred is nowhere near how I, and probably many others imagine why it was changed or why the name was chosen!
The events of pirate ship broadcasting put that time into order and sequence. Johnnie Walker's humour makes it all seem like a walk in the park and makes me wonder why I was not there to be in on the fun! His story brought back many wonderful memories of that era.
He and his wife's account of his battle with cancer was factual and makes clear the agonies of battling cancer for both the patient and the carer and all involved with that person's illness. My tears flowed. The actions and emotions of a cancer patient are very different to that of family and friends. I thought it was very clever and sensible to have his wife write and narrate the events of their terrible time. She portrays the fears, horrors and waiting of what this terrible disease does to a person. How they supported each other through it all; how his strength got him through some very gruelling times to get to the other side. Her love and care was with him through it all. How fortunate they are to be together. Some things are meant to be and in this case they are definitely meant to be together.

It is a disarmingly honest account of his relationship with his parents: his bullying father who died on the day of his bar mitzvah, but particularly the very close relationship he had with his beautiful but troubled mother, whose lengthy struggle with depression and carefully planned suicide has haunted him since the afternoon he found her, just days after his 21st birthday.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 80 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Alice Cooper, Golf Monster is Cooper's tell-all memoir. In it, he talks candidly about his entire life and career, as well as his struggles with alcohol, how he fell in love with the game of golf, how he dried out at a sanitarium back in the late '70s, and how he put the last nails in his addiction's coffin by getting up daily at 7 a.m. to play 36 holes.
This is the story of Cooper's life, and also a story about golf. He rose from hacker to scratch golfer to serious Pro Am competitor and on to his status today as one of the best celebrity golfers around - all while rising through the rock 'n' roll ranks, releasing platinum albums and selling out arenas with his legendary act.
Alice Cooper, Golf Monster is an unlikely and captivating tale full of wretched excess, life-saving redemption, ghoulish eye makeup, power chords, and five irons to the center of the green.
    Critic Reviews:
"What a blast from the past, and such insight to the future! Alice Cooper, Golf Monster shares Alice's personal life mission, interwoven with great stories and characters from the 60s through the present in rock and roll. Not to mention some wonderful golf tips and experiences, humorously presented. Thank you Alice, for a nice ride!" Very Enjoyable
This was an extremely entertaining book and I especially appreciated that it was narrated by Alice Cooper. I just wish it had been the full book instead of abridged.

Douglass spent his first 20 years in slavery, before escaping to the North. As a slave, he experienced both the kindness of his master's wife, who taught him to read, as well as the cruelty of sadistic overseers. This powerful story helped recruit many to the abolitionist cause.

    Perhaps it's better than nothing...
    Perhaps it's better than nothing...
But it is a shame that, as important as The Narrative of the LIfe of Fredrick Douglas is to the American literary and historical traditions, both versions available to Audible listeners are woefully deficient.
The narrators of either version--Jonathan Reese (this one) and Charles Turner (the other)--possess all of the timing skill of child actors performing a cold readings of Shakespeare and possess the vocal inflective talents expected of people who are nearly stone deaf. Considering that Douglas was one of the greatest oratory talents in the history of the United States, these grossly deficient narrators' inept representations of his great rhetorical work is an insult to his memory.
In addition to the undeniable technical insufficiencies that render listening nearly unbearable, neither version includes the essential "qualifying" documents written by William Lloyd Garrison or Wendell Phillips that are representative of slave narratives and inseparable reminders of the disenfranchisement of black people even in the free North.
If you still feel you must purchase one version or the other, that which is narrated by Turner has a more informative introduction at the cost of a laughably wretched narrator; and the version with Reese is slightly less talentless, with only a brief introduction, but even the highest quality (4) format has consistent low-bitrate digital distortion throughout. Since I find the introduction of either version to be sub-academic (and thus not worth the bother), my recommendation would be the Reese narration.
    Jonathan Reese narrates Douglass Autobiography
Would you consider the audio edition of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass to be better than the print version?
No; I could never denigrate Douglass's original writing, although the audio is great.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass?
Douglass writes persuasively of the horrors of slavery; one of the memorable examples is the beating of Frederick's Aunt Hester.
Which character as performed by Jonathan Reese was your favorite?
Douglass, as expressed in first person
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Douglass' book is analagous to Martin Luther King's speeches in influencing American equality of races.
    Any additional comments?
The narration was so effective that as I was using the audible.com version to help my Engish III students, someone in the hallway thought that I was simply showing movies to my students on those days, and I had to explain to my supervisor that we were using audible.com to help my students understand Douglass's writing. Thanks for a great job!
    INSPIRING!
This book is very inspiring. Some of his quotes will have you change your way of thinking. It makes you want to let go of your fear, and go for what you want; no matter the consequences. I picked this book up only to know more about my history.

John Sergeant's acclaimed memoir takes us from his somewhat eccentric childhood to his 30 years' service with the BBC. Memorably hand-bagged by Margaret Thatcher on the steps of the Paris Embassy as she lost the leadership contest, and the man to whom Ron Davis confessed his midnight perambulations on Clapham Common, Sergeant has been the man on the spot in most of the major news stories of the last 20 years. His mordant wit, keen sense of the absurd and acute powers of analysis pervade this audiobook, and his understanding of the labyrinthine workings of Westminster, and of the corridors of Broadcasting House, is second to none.
