Funny stories - But not as funny as I expected.

I live in the mountains in Colorado and bears are a common sight in our little town. Those of us who live with wildlife know how unpredictable they can be and live our lives accordingly. I am always shocked by stories of people who approach the wildlife in our National Parks. It is astonishing that people do not understand the dangers.

Having said that, I expected this book to be funny rather than shocking, based on the publisher's comments. It is funny. The stories made me smile. But it isn't as funny as I expected. The lessons that this wildlife ranger tries to teach are reiterated with nearly every story and I started to feel as though I was being lectured rather than entertained. In fact, it didn't even feel as though the reader was being taught, after reading the moral the third time. Honestly, I believe that those who choose to read this book probably already understand the seriousness of the issues and could be told once or twice at most and have taken the lesson onboard. I really wanted more humor and less moralizing. I also wanted the stories to be more unique, one from another. I think, perhaps, the book would be better if he included fewer stories and gave them more attention.

The narrator has a deep, silky voice and sounds exactly the way I picture this type of man to sound. Strong, outdoorsy -- based on this voice I picture someone who looks like Sam Elliot.

This was great

If any of you are of an age to remember Disney nature programs from the seventies, and you loved them as I did, this book and narrator will make you very happy.

This was an enjoyable trip into the woods with the ranger I enjoyed the description of the area, having been there myself. His experiences were humorously told. My brother recommended the book.

Quick and Clever

I hesitated about listening to this because it uses the word "Unauthorized." I associate that word, plus the name of an A-list celebrity, with Harvey Levin/TMZ sleaze mongering.

Belmont and Belcourt's "Tony Parker: An Unauthorized Biography" (2014) was a pleasant surprise. It's a lively, easy listen and must have been written by someone who loves sports as much as he or she loves writing. Parker's marriage to Eva Langoria - and his later infidelity and divorce - are mentioned, but not with as much excitement and detail as some of Parker's greater NBA games and plays. If I'd listened to this with one of my kids, I wouldn't have had difficult things to explain.

It was a little bit of a hagiography, but I'd sure rather listen to that than the snarky cruelty of a TMZ piece.

Roy Lunel's a sports announcer, so he was a good choice as narrator.

My rating of this book

This book was amazing. I am always in awe of people that have gone through things such as these and have STILL flourished. They have scars and have been affected but they don't let others see it, they move forward, they keep going and they still succeed in life. I feel that he has so much to give to the world. I look forward to many more books from him. I see him travelling the world mentoring to young athletes, people in shelters, single dads and definitely people addicted to drugs. People in each of these categories need to see what could happen if you persevere and not give up. Excellent read.

A good look into the life of an underprivileged young man thrust into the lime light just to face the bigotry of the times, and how he dealt with it.

Lacked alot of detail

The story line was great however it lacked a lot of specificity. He skirted the surface of a lot of areas of his life and should have given the reader/buyer more detail.

A true life story I know I am one of his brothers

I am going to get straight to the point. My brother is telling the world in his book the truth about his life experience. I rate this book a 100 if the rating when that high. What I like about this book he letting the world know exactly what happen to him while growing up to become one of the best athlete in really the world. Because if you check the statistic doing his career of the 70's in basketball, it speak for itself, it's in black and white. For those who read this book some will say to themselves," whow, that happen to me" What dislike about this book the publisher did not include photos of his athlete career. I highly recommend for the young generations, teenagers, adults and older to read this book. What you learn is you will see my brother for who was and is now. He has a beautiful heart,Humble, he smart, God Fearing, very athletic just a well as I was and still is.

A different view of Al Murray

Not quite what I expected. Al took a while to get me comfortable, but I would certainly buy another of his books now.

Excellent voice and delivery - I always prefer books read by the author. The footnotes were excellent and Al's grasp of historical events is very deep. Made more interesting by the fact that we have similar interests in military history, although Ihave to say that his go deeper than mine.

Not heavy, but serious enough with some very funny parts , very well delivered. No big surprise there.

Worth a listen.

Really interesting way of learning about the war

Gave some great stories about the war , the techy side was really interesting and I learnt a lot of stuff I didn't know

His pretense to be a jellied eel salt of the earth sort of guy ,rings hollow considering he's a public school boy though :/

Books worth a read

Not entirely what I had in mind

The first half or so is very much the memoir advertised, being written/read by a chap I vastly admire, who is of a similar age to me, so the Airfix and Action Man tales wee delicious. Then we become rather bogged down in Arnhem battles which, while fascinating, should have been in a different book. Not exactly packed with vicarious chuckles. Poignant and moving, yes; funny, no. And Im afraid funny, or at least heartwarming, was what I was after.

Al Murry narrated the work. He brought a lot to his material.

The antidotes. Al Murry made the peice personal in a way more conventional historians never do. I appreciated that. Though at times the history was a little thin when it needed to be fatter. Though he was honest about not being an expert.
