One of the best leadership books I have ever read, and THE best of 2017!

Wow. Jeff has a clear writing style that's easy to understand and his information is gold.

He has obviously researched his subject for years and crafted his book carefully. He gives you a practical guide with actionable steps on how to lead a company without burning yourself out. I particularly liked how he broke the information down to where people who are not already business leaders can understand it. There aren't any trendy corporate buzz phrases that don't mean anything. It's all down-to-earth, practical information, delivered in a friendly style.

I read a lot of self-published books and I was blown away by both the amazing content and professionalism of this one. The formatting is excellent.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a leader or be a better one.

Excellent Book for Entrepreneurs!

I just Started reading this and I can't stop! Jeff breaks it down in a personal and relatable way.... I think how he thinks and I kept thinking "YES- spot on" - at many points while reading! This book has excellent advice and simple steps to get to the next level without killing yourself or burning out. I agree with Jeff, We all want time freedom and financial freedom, but sometimes we make it harder to get from point A to point B.... Jeff shares his experience and knowledge and teachable outline. I am a entrepreneur and this book came at the right time! This book will bring value to you if you are a business owner or entrepreneur, or looking for a way to become the BEST Leader possible!

A helpful book for entrepreneurs stuck doing everything!!

I wish I'd had this book a few years ago! Jeff's advice for getting away from working in your business so you can work on it and enjoy more of what you love is spot on. I found the job description section especially helpful with useful tips for coming up with accurate job descriptions to benefit both the employer and the employee. This is a helpful step-by-step guide for setting goals for your business and then using them to create your perfect team!

One of my favorite quotes from Jack Welch is, "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others."

Why is being solid from the inside out so important? Excellent description of Toyota's training method

Liker and Meier did it again and wrote again an excellent book. This time it's the first in a new series about Toyota. I cannot wait for the next ones to be released.

Toyota Talent's main content is the training methods used by Toyota which originates from the Training Within Industry, Job Instruction module. Training within Industry was a US program to help the war effort. After the war, they send the trainers to Japan to help the Japanese industry. The TWI material made it in Toyota and they improved it and started using it.

I was aware of the TWI JI module before reading this book. I always found it interesting, however, my main job has always been in product development. So, before reading this book, I was quite biased that "it will not work for product development".

Liker and Meier gradually tackled my bias. In chapter 5 they introduce the excellent task variety table. This makes a distinction between the different type of tasks, from routine to nonroutine. Then they continue describing that every job consists of all the different types of tasks. More mechanical jobs contain more routine tasks, more engineering will contain more craft tasks. I slowly move over my prejudice and start to see that even my own job has a whole bunch of routine tasks. Doing this in the beginning of the book made me more open towards reading the rest.

After this Meier and Liker go into very much detail on how to standardize work, break it down and how to train it to other people. The descriptions are incredibly detailed, concrete and clear.

In the end, it shortly talks about the talent development approach to nonroutine work, but unfortunately this was only 3 or 4 pages. The books could have included more on that subject also still.

Anyways, I learned a lot.

Highly Recommended - Even for the most experienced Leader.

Having worked at Stryker during the tail-end of John Brown's historic 29 years of 20% Earnings Growth in Stryker EMS, I can say that Gary accurately captures the environment of the John Brown Era Stryker in a 20% Earnings Growth (for 29 years). He also boils the driving forces behind the historic performance to three meta-themes, or principles. Gary's comparison to his Army Task-Force 4-68, the application of the three themes, and the resounding success of the task force at the NTC against the OPFOR creates an engaging, lesson-filled leadership manual settling on 3 uncommon, key elements to drive sustainable success in business, or in the battlefield. This book instantly made my top-10 reading list for leadership development because of the simplicity of concept and the practicality of the analysis. As accurately as the book describes the success at Stryker, it equally describes the challenges large companies can face in sustaining success when a key theme is not executed, or executed appropriately. I highly recommend this book.

The power of focus

Focus an organization on a simple goal. (Not to be confused with an easy goal.) 9-0 or 20%. Plan and provide resources. Hire the right people - and value them. Mix these ingredients and magic happens.

This book provides inspiration to make this happen in any organization, regardless of type. I was fascinated by the parallels between Army Task Force 4-68, led by Fred Dibella and Stryker, led by John Brown.

Not a lot of new insight. Ties together concepts that are already well-established and simply places new labels on them. I think there is better (and better delivered) content out there that is more impactful. Nice concept, though.

Extremely Judgemental

The book was written based on authors experiences, therefore is full of judgements and without any case-based arguments.

Content is interesting but should be reduced to 1/5 of the current size

Best book I have read on Digital Transformation

Several points set this book apart from some others that I have read.

First, the author is technical, and has actually been hands-on for at least three transformations. Some CIOs are not technical, but this author can speak with authority because he has been deep enough in the weeds for the reader to trust his analysis and recommendations.

Second, I agree completely with the authors statements on Agile, Quality Assurance Teams, and DevOps as a whole. I have experience in a few of the areas, and he is spot on with his analysis. One cannot run a digital transformation without embracing Agile, QA, and DevOps. This book reinforces why.

I learned a lot from this book regarding Agile Portfolio Management and transformation into a data-driven organization. After reading the book, I learned why some regular practices will cause long-term problems.

I also really like how author speaks with candor, especially in both the introduction and the closing. I appreciate that he is a straight-shooter and tells it like it is. There needs to be more candor like this in many organizations.
