    Title: The New Leadership Literacies
Subtitle: Thriving in a Future of Extreme Disruption and Distributed Everything
    Author: Bob Johansen
    Narrator: James Gillies
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 52 mins

    Release date: 08-02-17
    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 12 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
A rapid and massively disruptive shift from centralized to distributed organizations has already begun. But current leadership practices were designed for large centralized organizations, making them increasingly obsolete. Bob Johansen, who has been projecting future trends from Silicon Valley since 1968, outlines five literacies leaders need to develop to cope with this brave new world.
Johansen says leaders need the literacy of projecting themselves into the future and "looking backwards" to make sure they are preparing for potential new developments. They have to cultivate the literacy of voluntarily engaging with their fear in a safe way, using simulations and gaming, so they can immerse themselves in the things they're worried about and deal with them. Distributed leadership is a third vital literacy - leaders need to know how to guide organizations that have no center, grow from the edges, and can't be controlled. In a globalized world they must master multimedia leadership - the literacy of having presence and influence even when they're not physically present. And finally, to stay on top of all this they need the literacy of creating positive energy: leaders have to be extremely fit, physically and mentally, to keep their own energy and that of their organizations high to cope with this era of extreme disruption. Johansen presents dramatic and mind-expanding examples of how forward-looking organizations are developing these literacies and offers listeners sage advice on how to cultivate them.

Companies need high potential leaders (Hi-Pos) more than ever before to help them adapt to today's tumultuous, digitally-driven business environment. If you meet the Hi-Po criteria, you're in high demand - and this book explains how to fast-track yourself.
Criteria for Hi-Pos are changing markedly. In the past, fast-track leaders were tapped mainly because of their cognitive abilities, analytical skills, imagination, thoroughness in finding solutions, and even perfectionist tendencies. In the new climate, other attributes will count more heavily: relationship skills, experience, judgment, abilities to engage, motivate, and draw out the best performance in others, strategic skills and even personal habits and behavior style. Above all, companies see Hi-Pos as people who have the capacity to grow quickly and step into new leadership roles competently. This book is a step-by-step guide to becoming a high potential leader.

If Your HR Department Gives You This Book, They Want to Keep You!
I first met Ram Charan when he was on the faculty for American Hospital Supply Corporationâs (BAXTER) first Executive Leadership program at Northwestern University. He closed out our week at NU with a full afternoon on strategic planning.
Strategic planning had been recently adopted by AHSC and all struggled with it. It was passed down by âcorporateâ with little or no instruction on how to use it effectively. On that afternoon, however, Ram changed everyoneâs thinking. He provided a simple template, which I use to this day, that made sense of the âwhy?â and the âhow?â He connected the dots and clearly showed how strategic planning can be used to create long term value.
I have been a âstudentâ of Ramâs ever since. I can guarantee that one hour with him will leave your brain scrambled with many new ways to look at business, career and life. He is a treasure.
From those early days, I have followed him as he went beyond strategy to tackle board performance, execution leadership, globalization and now, leadership development for those who will lead in a time of relentless change, complexity and uncertainty. Ram begins âThe High Potential Leaderâ by redefining what it means to be a successful leader in the 21st century.

The Wisdom of Teams is the definitive work on how to create high-performance teams in any organization. Katzenbach and Smith's comprehensive classic is the essential guide to unlocking the potential of teams in your organization.

Invaluable Contribution towards Understanding Team Dynamics
As a corporate trainer for over 15 years, I have repeatedly experienced the power of teams. This ability to deliver excellence under change, challenge, and pressure, and actually enjoy it, has been behaviourally demonstrated and reinforced consistently by hundreds of teams and thousands of participants spanning a wide range of culture, industry, and hierarchy. However, all I had with me was behavioural validation till I had the good fortune of discovering this wonderful book.
"The Wisdom of Teams" offers rich and invaluable research validation on the critical ingredients of high performance teams. The authors, Jon Kastenbach, and Douglas Smith, have researched teams from a wide range of industry, both high performance teams as well as teams that have failed, and listed very clear parameters that make teams either powerful or ineffective. The findings point to one of the prime responsibilities of leadership as the formation of 'teams'. Once a group of people become a team, they invariably find the competencies, and get the resources needed. Simply because the basic instinct of a 'natural' team is to win. No team is comfortable being second. Integration, collaboration, communication, creativity, managing time, enjoying change, taking on challenge, are attitudinal traits naturally available to a team.
This invaluable book defines what converts a group of people into powerful 'natural' teams. This is a must read for all team players, team builders, and leaders of teams and organizations.
Highly detailed framework for team development
    Overview:
The Wisdom of Teams presents Katzenbach and Smith's contention that real teams are the best approach to building a high-performance organization. The authors blended together their highly detailed framework for team development with examples of how several corporations successfully or unsuccessfully implemented these team principles. While acknowledging that teams may not be the best solution for every organization's problems, the authors unashamedly insisted that businesses do themselves a disservice by not considering the team-based approach. The book's twelve chapters are organized into three parts: Understanding Teams, Becoming a Team, and Exploiting the Potential.
    Summary:
Part One, Understanding Teams, introduces the reader to the authors' thesis that teams present the best approach to creating a high-performance organization.

Length: 9 hrs and 46 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-25-17
    Publisher: Penguin Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Good people are your organization's most critical asset. But what does it really mean to be good?
Leaders love to say that any company is only as good as its people but tend to evaluate candidates and employees more by their measurable accomplishments than by their "softer" qualities, like integrity, compassion, and other values. Best-selling author Anthony Tjan is leading a movement to change the way we think about goodness so that we can become better judges of people and create more goodness in ourselves, in others, and in our organizations.
Tjan argues that while competence is necessary, real goodness must also encompass values; a fantastic résumé can never compensate for mediocre character. In Good People, he provides a clear language to discuss goodness, redefining it as a lifelong, proactive commitment that, like any skill, can be exercised, honed, and taught. When leaders prioritize goodness in themselves and in others, they can create lasting cultures and tremendous value.
Drawing from his own experiences as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, Tjan also taps in to the wisdom of his relationships and interviews with extraordinary innovators, executives, artists, academics, teachers, and role models from all disciplines and walks of life.
The cases and profiles shared include: Harvard Business School dean Nitin Nohria, who has called for balancing leadership of competency with leadership of character; Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who has never forgotten her roots and shows profound kindness to her staff and clerks; Hollywood talent manager Shep Gordon, who has counseled his clients on the importance of generosity and gratitude; legendary venture capitalist Henry McCance, whose success proves that humbly ceding the spotlight to others makes room for their greatness; and master jazz musician Clark Terry, who devotedly mentored the young, blind pianist Justin Kauflin.
Packed with practical yet often surprising advice, Good People establishes a new language and framework you can use to evaluate, develop, and lead with goodness. Tjan will convince you that there is a hard truth in the "soft stuff" of business and that choosing and working well with good people is truly the only leadership decision that really matters.

    Good People Better Than Good
Good People seems like a simple enough proposition. No leader deliberately picks mugs. Anthony Tjan takes it a fair bit deeper, defining "goods" in a holistic manner in which the term embraces people, purpose and process in business. Tjan dissects each aspect (like a good McKinsey alumni) and while this can sometimes make the book a bit laboured it does reflect intense reflection, research and interview. The author has credibility as an entrepreneur as well as an analyst and anyone looking for confirmation that business can succeed as a social as well as a profit making process without contradiction will find support here.

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 8 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
This book is a practical guide that explores how startup entrepreneurs and business leaders, who hold no design degrees, can integrate service design into their development cycles to create sustainable, desirable, and profitable new services.
In the first part, Tenny explores the reasons why startups need to move away from the make and sell, industrial logic we've been exploiting over the last century. To take its place, he proposes a new service-oriented mindset that carries the idea of learn, use, and remember users' journeys. He also discusses the challenges our industrial society is facing and how the combination of design with a service-oriented mentality can be key to help new and existent businesses make this shift.
In the second part, he will take you on a journey through the MVS - Minimum Valuable Service - model. This model can seamlessly integrate service design into the Lean startup or any Agile development cycle. It adds the human values needed to foster service innovations within the Lean's scientific approach. In this part of the book, you will learn tools, methods, and practices that will help you get your hands dirty with design.

    Go beyond Lean Startup thinking
This guy is smart enough to realize that Design Thinking didn't really start a few years ago, and goes back a long way. He details the history of design, and how it got relegated to aesthetics.
He acknowledges the value of Lean Startup, but takes us many steps beyond that; into a set of empathic processes that help us develop things in a much more collaborative way. From his viewpoint, the Lean Startup MVP is much too late in the game to start building prototypes! Life is about services, not products. Even products are really services!
I found this book clear, actionable, and applicable as a brilliant addition to Lean Startup/Design Thinking type methods, and also stands on its own. This book should give you some real insights towards a deeper wisdom of how to design products and services that are truly useful, efficiently and wisely.

Length: 6 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-15-17
    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Most organizations are terrified of conflict, seeing it as a sign of trouble. But clinical psychologist and transformative communication expert Dr. Nate Regier says conflict is really just a kind of energy that can be used for good or ill. With the concepts and tools he shares in this book, you can turn conflict into a partner for positive change.
Handled incorrectly, conflict becomes drama - people struggle against themselves or each other to feel justified about their negative behavior. It's immensely costly to companies, teams, and relationships at all levels. Regier illustrates the interpersonal dynamics that perpetuate drama through a concept called the Drama Triangle and offers an alternative: compassionate accountability.
Compassionate accountability is the engine that turns conflict into a creative force. It's a process of holding people accountable while preserving their dignity. It balances caring, concern, empathy, and transparency with boundaries, goals, aspirations, and standards. Regier shows how the destructive dynamics of the Drama Triangle can be transformed using its constructive counterpart: the Compassion Cycle. Provocative and illuminating, this book helps us replace the unrealistic, sometimes punishing, even crushing demands we exact on both our colleagues and our loved ones with openness, resourcefulness, and persistence.

Scared of conflict? It can be handled with compassion and leave a positive mark!
âNegative conflict, manifested as workplace drama, costs the US economy more than $350 billion per year in the currency of broken relationships, dysfunctional teams, morale and engagement problems, and failure to thriveâ
Not many people truly enjoy conflict. Conflict seems to bring out the worst in people and so many of us donât know how to react to it or realize that it can be used as a catalyst for change. Growing up, I never liked conflict and tended to morph into the background whenever it reared its ugly head. As I jumped into the real world I ran smack into conflict coming at me from many directions. It was a changing life lesson and I had no choice but to swim with the sharks. Ultimately, I grew to embrace conflict to as a means to unite people and work on problems. Surprisingly, this little conflict avoidance girl was a dynamo at actually stepping in to resolve conflict with a clear head and open heart.
When I had a chance to read the new book coming out soon Conflict without Casualties A Field Guide for Leadership with Compassionate Accountability by Nate Regier Ph.D. I rejoiced. Conflict doesnât need to be a dirty word and we should snap to attention when it rears up because it means that people may be passionate about something and willing to stand up for what they believe. Nate shows us how conflict should be viewed as a creative force because there is often so much energy behind it. Nate asserts how conflict can be turned around and utilized to grow innovation, build trust, and further engage people. His views will help you change your perspective on conflict, people, and how it can be used to make us more accountable.
Conflict without Casualties is an effective tool kit for managing conflict. Nate introduces us to the nuances of drama through the âdrama triangleâ resulting from conflict and the roles people take on in the process.

In this behind-the-scenes look at the making of a champion, the coach of the Villanova University men's basketball team shares his competitive and cooperative philosophy along with lessons from his coaching career and the story of his personal road to success.
When Kris Jenkins sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to win the 2016 NCAA Tournament, it was a victory not just for a team and its coach but for an entire program. In his 20th season with the Villanova program, including a five-year stint as an assistant to Coach Rollie Massimino, Coach Jay Wright had achieved his lifelong dream - and witnessed the culmination of a decades-long effort to build a culture of winning around a set of core values.
In Attitude, Coach Wright shares some of the leadership secrets that have enabled Villanova, a private university with an undergraduate enrollment of less than 6,500, to thrive in the hypercompetitive world of college athletics. As he recounts the story of the 2015-2016 Wildcats, Coach Wright offers anecdotes from his own journey up the ladder of success, with lessons learned on the Little League playing fields of his youth and wisdom passed down from his coaches and mentors.
Each step of Villanova's journey to a national championship incorporates a signature term torn from Coach Wright's own motivational playbook. Here are key principles that aspiring leaders can apply not only on the basketball court but in the boardroom, the classroom, and the living room. From learning to accept your role to remembering to honor those who came before you, Jay Wright's core values provide a positive blueprint for transformational team building based on the idea that anyone - from the head coach to the last player on the bench - can be a leader when the moment demands it.
The product of a lifetime's worth of championship-level preparation, Attitude is perfect for anyone looking to build a team, achieve a goal, or nurture their own winning culture.
Read by author Mike Sheridan, with the introduction read by author Jay Wright and the foreword read by Adam Lazarre-White.
