Peeking in the window

The featured woman is Samuel Clemens' secretary, Isabel V. Lyon. I enjoyed the opportunity to peek in the window on the people who visited Clemens at his various homes, especially Helen Keller. The love triangles were lovingly fleshed out. The descriptions of the places, people, interiors of homes, gowns, and activities were well done.

The narration was pleasing to hear. The different voices were distinct enough to follow along effortlessly.

Love it but..

This is an interesting book that explores the lives of Cleopatra's sisters, and I really liked it. But rather than firmly setting the story within the cultural aspects of Ancient Egypt, it also felt like a lot of contemporary sensibilities were weaved into the story. While it may seem like that would add relatability to the story, it was distracting for me.

Just ok...

I couldn't find myself caring for these characters. I was very interested in hearing from the perspective of these two characters...but I just couldn't get into the story or make myself find them interesting. Just meh.

Surviving The Blitz In WWII Great Britain

This novel puts a flawed but human face on the good, the bad and the ugly of WWII England survival and family life. At first I hated the characters and thought seriously twice of abandoning the book. I encourage others to keep going with the story and push past the unlikable early few hours of listening. To me, it was more than worth it in the end. The writing is pithy, funny, poignant and really good.

The narration was top notch. Perfect timing, accents and voice changes for different characters. The excellent narration was the driving force behind my sticking with the book.

Recommended if you are interested in stories about WWII and life during the Blitz. Engaging, balanced and touching without any sugary sweetness. This was a book I went from really just hating to loving over the course of listening. Excellent.

Fifty shades of right and wrong

Going into this I think I had an idea it might be a riff on Oliver Twist and Fagin, but that wasnt the case (thankfully). But this also wasnt a hearty pep rally for noble sacrifices made during the Blitz. This showed the seamier side of people already living on slim margins made nearly unbearable by wartime shortages and restrictions. Creative survival was not always nice and was often dark, ugly and dangerous.

Vera Sledges acceptance of orphan Noel as her foster evacuee was no altruistic wartime contribution it was an opportunity to exploit him for fraudulent fund raising. Thing is, everyone else in the picture was finding their own way to scam the system Veras son, shopkeepers, the Home Guard - everyone seemed to be on the make. Half way through the story I wondered where was Londons make-do resilience? The stiff upper lip for King and Country? I couldnt feel connected to anyone mainly because none of the characters really connected emotionally to each other. It was All for One as long as the One is Me.

But there are shades of right and wrong, and Noel can make the distinction between what was legally wrong but morally right, and what was just plain wrong.

I'm speechless, but I have to write something.

The few times I got to see Nixon up close gave me a sort of sympathy for the man. I almost cried when this book came to an end. It made him so human. The demon story takes a huge back seat to the delightful insights into the political process in general, and the presidency in particular. Loved it!

Excellent narration

The book captures the essence of Nixon: angry, self-righteous, and deceitful, but also surprisingly human.

Just a perfect story

Leaves you wanting more. A alternative history that doesn't change the final out come of historical events just how and why they occurred. Grossman's dark humor is subtle and intelligent. VandenHeuvel Nixon is spot on and manages to convey a spectrum of emotions without going over the top with what can be one of most cliche impressions of our time.

And amusing exploration of an alternate version of Nixon, but lacking in plot substance

I walked away from this book feeling like I've been given a really great exploration of a hypothetical Nixon character, and not the redemptive version that's talked about in the book's synopsis. This is still the redbaiting, almost sociopathic, power-hungry vision of Nixon. It's more like a fantasy exploration of what if the Nixon we knew had faced the ancient ones. Very amusing, but the supernatural elements in the story are completely underdeveloped. They indicate at conspiracies and myths instead of exploring and fleshing them out.

The narrator does an exceptional job, and the character development is superb, but the end of the book did leave me feeling like something was substantially missing.

I'm so sad at its done

As the HPS of Celtic Arthurian mystery tradition, I didn't expect to love so much a series so steeped in Jewish and Christian myth, even though I am also a Kabbalist too. However, this tapestry is so well-woven I will never again see the three spiritualities as entirely separate, and I so strongly feel the truths, that I have no doubt of the lessons gifted to us through these books. Simply put, this series is sublime!!!!

I am a grateful recipient of Elizabeth Cunningham's 20 years of research, travel, intuitive creativity, and writing. This is an enticing story of our 1st century CE European and middle eastern suppressed history: goddesses, gods, and the authority of women. Heather O'Neill brings her captivating characters to life.

I have read 2 of the books in this series and have loved them. I love the history I have learned by reading these books. this series is definitely worth reading!

Excellent, highly recommend

Wonderful read. This book is a continuation of The Butterfly and the Violin and intertwines the lives of Sara and William with Kaja's life. I would highly recommend reading the books in order. The second hinges on the first, but oh how good the book is. It helps us remember how many lived and what they went through during the war times. Then it helps us see how Sara and William take the hard times in their lives and slowly work through them. Kristy Cambron is a relatively new author to me, but I will be reading more of her books!

Would you consider the audio edition of A Sparrow in Terezin to be better than the print version?

Oh yes, I get so caught up in the characters voices that you cannot wait for the next book to hear the rest of the story.

What did you like best about this story?

How the characters lives were pulled together from the past and it was a mystery but with each new character introduced it pulled the puzzle together.

What does Carrington MacDuffie bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The range of characters and voices she can do brings such enjoyment to the story. I will look forward to more audio books by her.

Great book

Great book! Great series.

Favored heroine and favored writer

This book transported me to another time and space. Visions and battles so beautifully described i visualized them and feel i know my favorite wonder woman, Tomoe, like a sister.

It was ok, but nothing spectacular.

The protagonist wasn't particularly likeable switching between overpowered Mary Sue and helpless baggage being dragged about by fate and duty. A bit of a letdown after reading Yamada Monogatori and falling in love with the genre.

A good read

I really liked this book. It's hard to find something in this genre so I was very happy to find this book. It's well written with good characters and a lot of action.

Good book about a female Japanese samurai based on a real person

Jessica Amanda Salmonson has written three earlier books about Tomoe Gozen, who was a real-life samurai during the Heiki wars of about 1185. Her novels are not exactly history but alternate reality because they take place in a country called Naipon which is modeled on Japan but not the real country. For one thing Japanese mythical creatures such as Tengu and Kappa are real in Naipon and interact with the characters. I've enjoyed all of the Tomoe Gozen books. (Tomoe Gozen is one of women warriors I include in a chapter on female warriors in one of my books. Some of the others include Ahhotep I from Egypt, Artemesia from Halicarnassus, Boudicca from England, Lozen a female Apache warrior, and Zenobia who ruled about half of the Roman Empire and came close to ruling all of it.)

A Very Good Civil War Novel

Rather than give an historical view of the conflict in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, Mr. Peters uses the thoughts, analyses and feelings of the generals (mostly) as they advance their armies in this very bloody conflict. It really works and he has no qualms about showing the foibles and miscalculations of many (Jubal Early for example), the skill of others in spite of their less than admiral personalities (Custer, Albanys own Phillip Sheridan) and true heroes (future presidents McKinley, Hayes) and John Brown Gordon and James Ricketts. Not bad for a guy who has called for the assassination of Julian Assange, being anti-Israel is anti-Semitic [count me in] and that Barack Obama was date raped by Cuba, Iran and Russia. The year this book was released he called President Obama a total pussy on Fox News. Im surprised hes not an Ambassador.

1st time listening to a Peters' book

A great way to spend a long drive. Very educational and engaging. Well written and performed.

Valley of Anger

I have read 2 of Peter's books and there is a common thread: everybody is pissed off. Almost all conversations are in anger. All private thoughts are about anger at others. My one take away of Peter's view of the Civil War is that it was a time when everybody hated everybody else.

Effektive Hörprobe...

Es gab nicht genug für mich gut zu schätzen, ob die Geschichte interessant ist, deswegen hab ich Story nur 3 Sternchen gegeben. Performance war aber spitze, also kaufe ich das komplette Buch. Falls die ganze Story langweilig ist, wird es immer noch (hoffentlich) eine gute Hörerfahrung.
