Interesting but I can't help feeling a bit disappointed

What made the experience of listening to SS-GB the most enjoyable?

James Lailey's reading. I also have his reading of The Ipcress File by the same author and he did such a good job with that so I felt sure he would do a good job with this one too. He did but this book gave him less scope as the characterisation is weaker and gave him less scope for the sardonic humour that he was able to bring to Ipcress.

What was one of the most memorable moments of SS-GB?

The earlier sections were stronger as they were more atmospheric and Deighton did a very good job of recreating the mood of London under Nazi rule. It then rather tailed off as the lack of characterisation became more obvious as the book went on. It also became too embroiled with so much in-fighting between the various Nazi and resistance factions and police man just trying to do his job that I stopped trying to work out where we were and who was fighting against whom.

What does James Lailey bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?

He has a lovely voice and gives distinct characterisation. His women's voices are just right and he did a good job with the accents.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I did find the ending unepxectedly moving but it was rather spoilt by being rather rushed. Deighton spent a lot of time setting up the various factions and then seemed suddenly to remember that the opening scene had involved a murder and the solution to that seemed rather tacked on.

Any additional comments?

This was, I believe, one of the earliest 'what if Hitler had won the war' novels. I had been curious about it for some time, I am glad to gave read it and I think it is worth my four stars.

Good story

This tale, although long, kept my interest throughout. It deserved better narration as the intonation was clueless, and some of the pronunciation was hilarious.

However, the content was an interesting and knowledgeable portrayal of the times, and it was worth listening to.

Good story

I love historical fiction and this is a great find. There are not many books told about a woman's life, and even fewer from the viewpoint of a non-noble woman. The story keeps you listening with its twists and turns.

Listenable

Good enough story but not the best reader. It took me many hours to get used to the rushed way that the reader reads. I wish she would have read just a bit slower.

Sarah Lark is my new favorite author!

Any of Sarah Lark's books. All available audio versions are done by the same narrator and she's perfect.

This book is written in 3rd person. I don't care for 1st person novels, so in case you are like me, I wanted to mention this. I absolutely can't wait for more of Sarah Lark's books to be translated into English, and for more audio versions. I could read and listen to her books over and over and over, and I'm a very picky reader. Her books are very well researched, and although she takes some liberties with history, I like that the basic history is authentic. Be sure and listen to the afterword, for the author's detailed explanations of her research and the actual history of the time and characters.

Her characters are all so well developed that you feel like you know them all. I miss them!

You should know that the main subject of this book is slavery in Jamaica, in case you find the subject upsetting. Without spoiling the story, though, all of the slaves are not victims.

good reading

Good historical facts. Interesting story I like this author stories. All of her books are good.

My favourite to date of Sarah Lark books

This historical fiction book is excellent. read to me brilliantly and the end section by Sarah to explain how she created the book very useful.

I believe everyone should read this book, it provides an insight into life on the plantations and how very cruel white people where to black people all down to the colour of ones skin. A truly good read.

Awful awful narration

Lasted about 3 minutes. Awful narration. Having read other Sarah Lark books it seemed so wrong.

Another Superb Sharpe Tale

Sharpe's enemy is another example of Bernard Cornwell's excellent work. Written with such great detail, I always feel like I'm there with Sharpe and Harper. This story is no different. It's gripping from the start and fast paced enough to keep you enthralled. Yes, if you read all the Sharpe series there are parts of repetition, but you get that in most series - new readers need some feel of depth to the characters.

The narration is brilliant and in Rupert Farley, they have found a perfect match for Sharpe. He portrays all the characters well, and for me, puts real feeling into the story.

25 years ago at the age of 17, I read my first Bernard Cornwell book, which also happened to be my first ever book I'd read! Since then I've brought every single book he's written and read them all with same amazement and excitement as the first - 'The Winter King'. I can't thank Mr Cornwell enough for doing what 11 years of teachers could do, and that's encourage me to read.

Magnificent beyond measure!

Noble Cause is magnificent beyond measure, an epic story that reaches out to seize your heart and soul with a power that takes your breath away. The Passion of the Roman

What did you like best about The Roman? What did you like least?

The story revolves around the early church from the perspective of a noble Roman.

Mika Waltari misses the mark with this piece of historical fiction. I enjoyed his other work "The Egyptian" however, though I was able to complete this work, I found myself more often than not waiting for the story to progress in a meaningful way in relation to the protagonist to no avail.

The introduction is strong, as Waltari has a wonderful style that lends well to the description of youth, ignorance, intelligence, passion, depression and courage. Midway into the story the theme comes into focus and shines a heavy light on Christianity. The classical historical perspective is lost and the tale becomes a kind of Christian church history in the time of Claudius and Nero. The trials and tribulations of the Christians takes center stage and envelops the narrative several times, completely eclipsing the secular classical history.

I think this could be an enjoyable tale for someone who is uplifted by tales of Christianity. Tales of the church do not inspire me in any way, no matter how fond I may be of the authors style.

Any additional comments?

Beware of the dated references to negroes and of the jews. Waltari applies the racial thinking of his time directly to the time he writes about it seems.

Disappointing

Really a wast of time. Not entertaining at all. Didn't even finish it. wish I could get a refund!

Poor narration choice

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would have enjoyed reading this book more than listening. I don't think the narrator was a good fit and her Chinese accent was horrible, offensive, and off-putting.

Twelve Dancing Princesses and Speakeasy's!

This is historical fiction and a fairy tale retelling. Combine the prohibition era with 'The Twelve Dancing Princesses' and you get 'The Girls at the Kingfisher Club.' The roaring twenties is a perfect setting for this Grimm fairy tale. The reality of restriction and prohibition in the society of day leading to an overwhelming majority of citizens rebelling by drinking at the speakeasy's at night. Politicians and policemen frequented the speakeasy's while their political platforms railed against corruption and the vice of drink. Bootlegging alcohol across state lines was a booming trade, and the speakeasy that got raided was the one that didn't pay protection or a bribe. Now, add the state of women's rights.

I truly mourn the loss of Mr. Pope

One of the best Ramage novels!

Finally! Ramage is in a ship of the line, a 74; and he puts it to very good use in this stirring sea tale. Ramage continues with all the characters we've cone to know and love over time. The only real complaint is that this is the last audiobook available in the series and leaves things hanging for the avid audio listener. There are more Ramage printed books, but those do not fill the drudge on the commute home as these have for the last few months. Audible, how about some more Alan Lewrie and Ramage novel???

Another great action in the Ramage series of novels. I do wish however that Pope would have continued the series to some logical conclusion. Leaves you hanging and wanting for more.

I have finished all 18 of the Ramage Novels. Every one was great! Better than the Hornblower series.

Would you listen to Ramage and the Dido again? Why?

Yes, this was a pleasant adventure in a new ship. Unfortunately, it is the last in what is over all a very entertaining series.

What does Steven Crossley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Steven Crossley has become one of my favorite narrators. His work on the Ramage series has been excellent. He gives life to the characters.
