    Title: Saving Israel
Subtitle: How the Jewish People Can Win a War That May Never End
    Author: Daniel Gordis
    Narrator: Robert Blumenfeld
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-28-10
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 36 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The Jewish State must end, say its enemies, from intellectuals like Tony Judt to hate-filled demagogues like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Even average Israelis are wondering if they wouldn't be better off somewhere else. A country which once restored hope to Jews world-over now feels itself slipping. Increasingly, Israelis wonder how much has really been accomplished and whether they ought to persevere.
Can Israel win the next military war for survival, whomever the foe? Can Israel defuse the demographic time bomb of a growing Arab population? Can Israel, a country that's come so far and sacrificed so much, keep up the will to fight? Daniel Gordis is confident his fellow Jews can renew their faith in the cause, and in Saving Israel, he outlines how. Gordis has written many popular personal essays and memoirs in the past, but Saving Israel is a full-throated call to arms. Never has the case for defending -- no, celebrating -- the existence of Israel been so clear, so passionate, or so worthy of wholehearted support.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent!
As a politically conservative American, I do not agree with every idea floated in this fine book, nonetheless Gordis' book (Saving Israel) is a must-read for every American Jew, every Christian, as well as every non-Christian who is interested in Israel, the Middle East and the conflict in the Middle East. I go back and re-visit chapters from this book often. The narrator, Robert Blumenfeld, is superb.
    Over promises and under delivers
An intellectual exercise that left me continually wondering what the author was going to propose. Left me without any practical outlook on what to do while it painted broad brush strokes about the challenges faced by current- day Israel. A most challenging topic that gives over to a disappointing delivery.
The narrator's vocal style was contrived and irritating.
    Excellent!
This should be a must read for every one who is interested in world peace!!

    Author: Sarah Murgatroyd
    Narrator: Catherine Milte
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 25 mins

    Release date: 01-04-10
    Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 29 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1860, an eccentric Irish police officer named Robert O'Hara Burke led a cavalcade of camels, wagons and men out of Melbourne. Accompanied by William Wills, a shy English scientist, he was prepared to risk everything to become the first European to cross the Australian continent. A few months later, an ancient coolibah tree at Cooper Creek bore a strange carving: 'Dig Under 3ft NW'. Burke, Wills and five other men were dead. The expedition had become an astonishing tragedy.
Sarah Murgatroyd reveals new historical and scientific evidence to tell the story of the disaster with all its heroism and romance, its discoveries, coincidences, and lost opportunities. This is a spell-binding book.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sarah Murgatroyd deftly captures the foolishness, suffering and hapless heroism of one of the 19th-century's least-known, but most epic, undertakings. I can almost guarantee that you will be biting your nails by the time you reach the Dig Tree of the title - and more than that I cannot say without spoiling this remarkable and addictive tale." (Bill Bryson)
"Conveys an experts grasp of her material. The Dig Tree is unlikely to be superseded...instinctive and convincing." (Times Literary Supplement)
"Sarah Murgatroyd was a splendid writer. This book is a masterpiece of exploration history - entertaining, trenchant, a marvel." (National Geographic)

The race to cross the Australian interior
This is a fascinating glimpse at early Australian history. The race to cross Australia and some of the characters and personalities involved. Extremely well written and narrated. Left one wondering about the pursuit of progress at any cost and the ego's of some of the early players in Australian history.
Essential Reading for Vistors to the Key Sites
I wish I had known about this book before my recent visit to many of the significant sites of the Burke and Wills saga; it would have made the journey much more enjoyable.
    Entertaining History
Murgatroyd has done a superb job depicting in graphic detail the disaster that was Burke and Wills. A fascinating piece of Australian history.
Great History - the real truth!
Love learning about burke and wills - how amazing that they were basically jerks lol. It is incredible to think that not that long ago people were dying trying to find out what was in the centre of Australia. It is also amazing how ignorant they we were to our indigenous people. Had they valued their friendship and knowledge- they would have lived. Thanks to the theory of evolution that made white men think that they were inferior.
    Good but not great
Good story but not amazingly great like others I have heard. Interesting facts within but very dry ( no pun intended)

    Critic Reviews:
"A clear, fascinating look at an aspect of climate studies - and of El Niño - mostly ignored by science." (Amazon.com review)
"Fagan describes the mechanisms and effects of El Niños, La Niñas and other far-reaching meteorological events and then discusses how several societies have coped with them. Could severe climatic change topple a modern civilization? 'No one force--overpopulation, global warming, or rapid climate change--will destroy our civilization. But the combination of all three makes us prey to the knockout blow that could.'" (Scientific American)

    Potentially excellent, heavily flawed
I have no complaints about the actual text- interesting subject matter and the text is on the whole well written. Unfortunately, the well-written prose and fascinating facts are robbed of any interest by the turgid and monotonous narration. I found myself getting frustrated at how boring this otherwise excellent book was being made simply by a poor choice of narrator.
    Meh.
Rambles alot. Doesn't seem to come to a conclussion. I normally like Fagan's work, but this...

    Release date: 06-25-09
    Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
'In a Nutshell', the new audiobook series from Naxos AudioBooks, continues with a fascinating history of Tibet.
Part of China for many years, yet with a clearly distinctive culture (with the central devotion of its people being to Buddhism and the Dalai Lama), Tibet has a unique character in the panoply of world nations. Here we have an independent view of its history and the customs and beliefs of its people - and a commentary on the current situation.
    Editorial Reviews:
A comprehensive and concise snapshot of the country of Tibet. Anyone traveling to this mysterious and remote land, "at the roof of the world," would benefit from the thorough descriptions of geography and geology, flora and fauna, and the nation's political and religious strife. The production begins with poignant and atmospheric percussion and sacred chanting by the Tibetan Sherab Ling Monks, then flows to vivid descriptions of the harsh environment and climate, extreme altitudes, diet, customs, and dress. David Rintoul's modulated narrative pinpoints Tibet's contrasts and beauty with audible awe as he marvels at its many surprises. This sympathetic portrait of the plight of the Tibetan people and the Dalai Lama is underscored by Rintoul's gentle vocal elegance.

    Good, but not great.
I would have preferred the 5 gallon bucket version of this book to the nutshell. Much of the information is extremely valuable but some of the information is obviously bias, and could use a deepening of cultural context. This book has a very English colonialist format. Tibet is so rich, it is hard to grasp in such a short snapshot, and you would be doing yourself a disservice if this is your primary source on this culture.

Would have been great 25 years ago
This would have been a great listen were it 1985 or so. The material is very dated and I expect Africa is very different now than it was 25 years ago when this book was written. It's based on the author's experiences in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
    Enough said.
Sad but true observation of Africa then
The more things change the more they remain the same. Africa now is not the Africa David Lamb wrote about yet some of the ailments that bedevilled it still exist - corruption, rulers with lesions of grandeur and unfulfilled potential. Bright spots have arisen in more democracy, greater access to international trade, a growing middle class, a free South Africa and a more engaged African Union. I would love a sequel looking at how Africa has performed since the last time he wrote this book!

    Publisher's Summary:
There have been many invasion threats to Britain. This programme dramatises one of the most potent: the mighty Armada sent by Philip of Spain against the navy of Elizabeth I and her sea captains, led by Sir Francis Drake. This is a crucial narrative of stirring history, relived with verve and freshness.
© and (P)1982 Ivan and Inge Berg
    Editorial Reviews:
The Spanish Armadas disastrous invasion of England marked a seminal shift in European military might: one naval power confronted another, with Britain emerging the dominant sea power for centuries to come. Spains King Phillip II had lost his claim to Englands crown upon the death of Mary Tudor, his royal spouse. Marys successor, Elizabeth I, seemed an easy target: female, unwed, protestant, and heirless. Philip, however, would only see his power diminish, his hapless fleet outmaneuvered, out-gunned, and even looted under lantern light by the stealthy Sir Francis Drake. Sonorous and sprightly actor Edward de Souza hosts this lively reenactment of European sea-change. Francesca Annis shines as the newly crowned Elizabeth, capturing the regal composure and assertive rhetoric of a young monarch consolidating her power.

    history as entertainment
I would like the dramatization more if the propaganda was muted slightly, the presentation less chauvinistic and facts respected. For instance, to say there were no English casualties is to ignore the huge mortality rate of the English soldiers, of whom half died of disease made worse by poor supplies and little food, during the mobilization. So many sailors perished during 1688 that England would have been incapable of further defense had it been necessary. Certainly, there were no sailors to man over half the vessels the crown requisitioned.

    Publisher's Summary:
The novelist Susan Goodman, herself a child of the Second World War, wanted to commemorate and celebrate the experiences of a special generation before they were lost to history. When she appealed for stories, she was overwhelmed by the response. This remarkable book is the result, a rich tapestry of the dramatic, amusing, poignant, and everyday during the 20th century's greatest conflict, through a child's eyes. Its compelling first-hand stories reflect not only British life in the towns, suburbs, and countryside, but also the experience of those who arrived as refugees. Matter-of-fact, nostalgic, fresh, funny, tragic, evocative: these voices form a narrative that brings back to life an era that shaped a generation.

"A remarkable book on childhood recollections of the Second World War." (Mail on Sunday)

    Excellent Personal Perspectives
This book was very interesting to listen to because it let the reader get a feel for the war experience from the down to earth perspectives of ordinary citizens caught in the fray. For those of us who have only seen the battles on History Channel, it made it all seem more real. There is a lot to be learned from the experiences of others. I admire the attitude and perspective of those she interviewed. I would like to know more.
    Social history in the raw
Clearly read accessable and expansive in its' depth, this book is well worth listening to. It explores the social history of the 1930s and contrasts this with the experiences, tragic and funny, of children during the war. Most of the book is a reading of transcripts from the children who were there. The reader adds some variety to these by adding appropriate, (though occasionally unconvincing) regional accents. It makes you realise how lucky you've been. If you have an interest in British social history it is recommended
An excellent collection of childhood memories
An interesting and at times both humorous and sad read brilliant by the excellent and easy to listen to narrator Anne Dover
