    Title: Inventing the AIDS Virus
    Author: Peter H. Duesberg
    Narrator: J. Arthur Tripp
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-16-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
An eminent scientist and pioneer in the discovery of retroviruses challenges the widely accepted belief that HIV is the cause of AIDS. Duesberg argues that HIV is merely a harmless passenger virus that does not cause AIDS. Sure to spark intense debate, this provocative book offers an original and incisive critique of the rise and fall of HIV.
    Editorial Reviews:
For all the wonders and advancements the science world has given us, scientists can sometimes fall into the trap of consensus beliefs, which is exactly what's at the heart of Peter H. Duesberg's Inventing the AIDS Virus. Known for his cancer research, Duesberg, in this audiobook, challenges the wildly held view that HIV is the cause of AIDS. Accomplished narrator, J. Arthur Tripp, handles the challenging text with the appropriate aggression needed for this controversial subject matter. Listeners are sure to be intrigued by this lesser-heard side of the AIDS discussion.
    Members Reviews:
A must read! Even if you don't agree with Dr. Duesberg's theory for the cause of AIDS.
Duesberg plainly describes the systems in place which are used to manipulate and control the narratives and silence dissent of the medical industrial complex and control the founding and/or release of new technologies. This technique is not only used in the so called medical industry, but in all areas of industry such as energy and defense.
    Must read/listen for everyone!
If you could sum up Inventing the AIDS Virus in three words, what would they be?
    Factual, Frightening and Infuriating
What was one of the most memorable moments of Inventing the AIDS Virus?
The moment you realize we have ALL been lied to for all these years.
What about J. Arthur Tripps performance did you like?
His voice is easy on the ears and consistent.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. It made me even more furious than I already was about this topic.
    Any additional comments?
It is obvious to see why Dr. Peter Duesberg has been ostracized all these years for daring to stand up to the establishment. After all, AIDS is a business first!
Hyperbole at its Best, But Sounds Plausible
The first thing that struck me as I listened to the book and its hyperbolic claim that HIV does not cause AIDS, was that the book was written 15 years ago. And of course, 15 years of medical research is nearly an eternity; consequently, I would have preferred a book making such a brazen claim that had a more recent copyright. I found one on Amazon, Science Sold Out by Rebecca Culshaw (2007); however, it is not available on audio or digital, so I was limited to Duesberg's research if I was staying with audio. Although most of the book was too detailed for my taste buds - quoting stats and referring to studies - his premise seems to be plausible.
After listening to Inventing the AIDS Virus, I was reminded of the old saying, "It was worth the price of admission." Despite the chock full of statistics, there is plenty to like about the book. I found a number of items that made the listen worth while. For instance (and I don't think this is a spoiler), Duesberg questions the notion of a virus causing a terminal disease that lays dormant in the body for more than 10 years. Typically a virus manifests its symptoms within days or weeks.

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-02-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Ancient Iran: Cosmology, Mythology, History presents Iran's pre-Islamic history within the context of both its complex cosmology and rich mythology. The audiobook uses the concept of farr to show how authority, finding guidance in the cosmic realm, organized the lives of Iran's hero-saints in the mythic realm. It also discusses how historical monarchs organized their hierarchical societies according to the dictates of Ahura Mazda.
The audiobook is divided into three parts. The first part examines cosmology, concentrating on Ahura Mazda and the Ahuric order that emanates from him. The next section addresses mythology and describes how the rulership of hero-saints promoted the farr, culminating in the unique creed of Zoroaster. The final section tells the history of pre-Islamic Iran. It begins with a study of life on the plateau, moves on to the stages of empire and concludes with the rule of the Parthians and Sassanids.
Additionally, through a new interpretation of Firdowsi's Shahname, the volume shows how the prophet Zoroaster reorganized Mazdian cosmology to fit the ethical, philosophical, and sociological dynamics of Achaemenid and Sassanid Iran.
    Members Reviews:
    Very disappointing
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
To make the theological (he called it cosmology) narration and explanation clearer and simpler. To give reference for all the rulers history, which was given as facts without supporting evidence. Less confusing new names that kept being introduced, without making emphasis on who are the main characters to concentrate on. Also, the narrator was not familiar with how to pronounce the names as we are used to call them in other history books (may be he was using Iranian way of pronunciation, but it was difficult to follow).
What will your next listen be?
Another book on ancient history, but from Great Courses library.
What didnt you like about Mark Delgados performance?
Too quick in reading especially with many new names (some are trivial characters) and pronouncing their names in a different way than other history books do.
What character would you cut from Ancient Iran?
To shorten the theology (cosmology) and to emphasise who are the main characters in the story.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
It was the last refuge of the desperate Jews-the warren of sewers underneath their city. Above, the Nazis implemented the destruction of their friends and relatives in a final Aktion against the ghetto in the Polish city of Lvov. A small band of Jews, however, escaped into the grim network of tunnels, there to live for fourteen months with the city's waste, the sudden floods that washed some of them away, the fumes and the damp, the rats, the darkness, and the despair.
Their only support was a sewer worker, an ex-criminal who constantly threatened to leave them if they ran out of money. Many died; some of cyanide in mass suicide, some of falling into the rushing waters of the river, some simply of exhaustion. A baby was born and then murdered almost immediately. The group quarrelled, split into factions and threatened each other at gun point. The survivors found themselves at one point, trapped in a chamber filling to the roof with storm water.
Yet survive they did, even infiltrating themselves into the camps above to find their missing relatives. When the Russians liberated Lvov, they emerged from the sewers filthy, bent double, emaciated, unrecognizable. When they opened their eyes their eye seemed blood red. Robert Marshall, author of All the King's Men, has written the harrowing story of the survivor's ordeal based on a long series of interviews and a hitherto private diary, creating a blazing testimony to human faith and endurance.

    Read the book!
Sadly, an amazing book about survival, luck of the draw,
making your own luck, and tale of sacrifice by others to save holocaust victims.
Not sure in my best days I would have had the will power to survive.
The luck to survive, in intelligence to make my own luck to survive.
And I wrestled through college, played rugby D1 men's USA for 10 years and
30 yr excellent career as a fee based/commission based financial advisor.
I still wonder as now in my 60s if I could have from age 40-60 had I been a victim during those ages in my life.
READ THE BOOK forget the film IMO
    III
Powerful story, beautifully written and well researched.
Very much enjoyed this book. It is well researched, drawing from interviews of several of the survivors. It is the story of a small group of people who managed to survive the liquidation of the Lvov ghetto by hiding in the sewers for 18 months. Aided by a polish sewer worker and true hero, Leopoldo Socha, the book deals with the delicate balance of mans worst and best inpmpulses. While the accounts of the survivors, did not always agree when interviewed years later, the author takes great pains to arrive at an ultimate truth. It is the story of courage in the face of horrific circumstances and is deeply moving. I have read a great deal about the camps, but did not know as much about the ghettos and the actions the Nazis took there. I had heard and been taught mostly about Warsaw, but knew nothing about Lvov. This is an important bit of history, and shouldn't be missed by anyone who has an interest in the Holocaust. There was a movie made, in Polish called "In Darkness" which I had heard of, but wanted to read the book first, so that I could get a move accurate accounting. The movie actually honored the truth of the book to a surprising degree and is well worth seeing. There is also another book called The Girl In the Green Sweater by the young girl who survived the atrocities in this story.

    Publisher's Summary:
This companion provides a comprehensive survey of the life, work and legacy of Benjamin Franklin - the oldest, most distinctive, and multifaceted of the founders.
    Members Reviews:
A great and slightly more academic collection of perspectives on the multi-faceted Franklin...
Anyone who has studied Ben Franklin for any period of time knows that there just isn't one Franklin, there are many. His various personae, styles and dispositions seemed to suit more his current goal or project than to foster a unique and homogeneous identity. As many have said, Franklin resists easy categorization. Arguably considered the "most approachable" founding father, the one we would want to drink ale with and chat with for hours, Franklin's historical persona nonetheless remains enigmatic on many levels: ferociously serious, almost pedantic at times, childishly adolescent at others. That this highly revered, almost worshiped, wizard of electricity also wrote satirical pieces saturated with fart jokes and puns provides a case in point. As such, his prose displays familiarity and comfort with high and mighty rulers as well as with workers and laborers. Just when Franklin seems to reveal himself, another facet appears that contradicts, or at least undermines, a previous conception. Pinning him down seems impossible.
Perhaps that's why "The Cambridge Companion To Benjamin Franklin" does not attempt to sum up Franklin's work, life or philosophy. Its essays instead look at singular parts of the Franklin that reaches out to us from vast volumes of letters and mostly short literary works. Not to mention his one book, his Autobiography. The essays don't build on one another, so readers can pick up and browse with ease. Though most of the essays number 10 - 20 pages and the book itself numbers only some 200, the collected scope and depth belie the book's thin wiry spine.
Numerous topics receive attention: the fate of Franklin's library, for one. He had a wing built on his house to hold his substantial collection that reached four thousand volumes by the late 18th century. Sadly, his original house no longer stands in Philadelphia (visitors will see a large ghostly wire frame reproduction in its place), but this essay gives a good idea of what that rather modest (for a founding father, at least) dwelling may have contained. Upon Franklin's death his library stayed intact only until 1801 when the books were sold.
Essays follow on Franklin's conception of virtue, his voluminous satiric works and fictional personae, including his famous "Silence Dogood" letters, the "Speech of Miss Polly Baker," "Dialogue between Britain, France, Spain, Holland, Saxony and America," "A Conversation on Slavery" and his final 1789 work "An Address to the public" that satirizes slavery. These satires often have political or social motives, either on the state of Britain and the colonies or on a particularly polarizing topic, which America never seems to lack.
Another essay explores Franklin's alter-egos and his entry into the "republic of letters." Alter-egos apparently were preferred for print and personal names for more "serious topics." Franklin fell right into this tradition as even a cursory glance at his literary output will show.

    Title: The Siege at Peking

Length: 10 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-23-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
In June 1900 the foreign legations at Peking were attacked by troops of the Boxer rebellion and Imperial Chinese troops. The ensuing siege lasted 55 days and shook the world. In this work, Peter Fleming traces its history and impact.
    Members Reviews:
    Old school, but engaging
One can certainly find many more current and more scholarly studies on the Boxer Rebellion. For a work written in 1959, however, Fleming's treatment of China's reaction to European imperialism is remarkably sympathetic and balanced. Moreover it's a great read so far as military history goes. The book's one bothersome issue is giving a number of quotes in French without offering translations. The narration is a perfect match for the subject.
    The History Behind the Movie
For fans of Charlton Heston's movie "55 Days at Peking", this is the history that inspired the movie. I knew something of the history of the Boxer Rebellion and the Allied efforts to relieve the besieged legations. Fleming's book gives great detail of the intrigue in the Chinese Imperial Court, the dithering of the Allied ministers and the bravery of the soldiers and residents of the foreign legations. Shaw-Parker's narration was a bit dry at times, but good overall.
So, THAT'S where they got the movie from!
As a youth I was thrilled by the (now) old-fashioned derring-do, color, and bravery of the movie "55 Days in Peking" with Charleston Heston, David Niven, Ava Gardner et al. The story of the "Boxer Rebellion" and its siege of the foreign legations in Peking in 1900 was drawn from this book. Well-written, well-paced, and very well read!
The only quibble is that the book reflects its provenance ( UK, 1959) when the author quotes Frenchmen in their original French and leaves their words untranslated. One supposes Peter Fleming assumed any educated person could handle a few sentences in French ;-) However, at least the French is well-pronounced by the narrator.
    Recommended!
    Insightful
Informative and insightful. Peter Fleming's eye and pen misses little. Concise yet thorough. Good narration. Kudos.
    Thoroughly entertaining.
This is a jolly good piece of work, narrative history of another generation, the kind of which fell from popularity for many years. Reading like an adventure story, the author marshals his material with all the skill and pace that one might expect form his more famous relative. It's well read and well paced and will suit those who like their history to be easily comprehensible and fun; those looking for a more dense analysis of China at the time might find it a little wanting, however. For me, a really good listen.
