    Narrator: Fred Stella
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-24-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
A journalist explores his familys history to reveal the hybrid cultural and political landscape of Pakistan, the worlds first Islamic democracy
Shahan Muftis family history, which he can trace back 1,400 years to the inner circle of the prophet Muhammad, offers an enlightened perspective on the mystifying history of Pakistan. Mufti uses the stories of his ancestors, many of whom served as judges and jurists in Muslim sharia courts of South Asia for many centuries, to reveal the deepest roots - real and imagined - of Islamic civilization in Pakistan.
More than a personal history, The Faithful Scribe captures the larger story of the worlds first Islamic democracy, and explains how the state that once promised to bridge Islam and the West is now threatening to crumble under historical and political pressure, and why Pakistans destiny matters to us all.

    a deep and important book
That is also a fast read. Mufti links the personal story of his family with historical and political events of the centuries that influence us all. I learned so much from this riveting, beautifully written memoir and political history!

    Enlightening book...perfect for 2016
Really impressed with the writing style, and how the history is simply explained...and in an entertaining fashion that isn't boring, but illuminating.
    History in context
Writing in the context of his family's history in Pakistan, Mr. Mufti tells a great and understandable story. I'm beginning to really get a picture of all the hopes for that new country and an insight into governing in a modern age.
Let faithfully scribble what I can.
There is beauty, there is continuity in family line of work, there is injustice and justice. There is more beauty. There are mysteries to be solved. There are puzzles. There are surprises. Read it.
    Fantastic.
This is a great story and a great book. You can really feel yourself walking back into history and you will come away with a new view of Pakistan. Not all roses but also not all violence.

    Title: Dreams of Other Worlds
Subtitle: The Amazing Story of Unmanned Space Exploration
    Author: Chris Impey, Holly Henry
    Narrator: Matthew Josdal
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 15 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-06-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 23 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Dreams of Other Worlds describes the unmanned space missions that have opened new windows on distant worlds. Spanning four decades of dramatic advances in astronomy and planetary science, this book tells the story of eleven iconic exploratory missions and how they have fundamentally transformed our scientific and cultural perspectives on the universe and our place in it.
The journey begins with the Viking and Mars Exploration Rover missions to Mars, which paint a startling picture of a planet at the cusp of habitability. It then moves into the realm of the gas giants with the Voyager probes and Cassini's ongoing exploration of the moons of Saturn. The Stardust probe's dramatic round-trip encounter with a comet is brought vividly to life, as are the SOHO and Hipparcos missions to study the Sun and Milky Way. This stunningly illustrated book also explores how our view of the universe has been brought into sharp focus by NASA's great observatories--Spitzer, Chandra, and Hubble--and how the WMAP mission has provided rare glimpses of the dawn of creation.
Dreams of Other Worlds reveals how these unmanned exploratory missions have redefined what it means to be the temporary tenants of a small planet in a vast cosmos.

You won't learn anything new here..
What disappointed you about Dreams of Other Worlds?
If you're an engineer looking for behind the scenes stories of the trials and tribulations of these impressive programs, or a lay person wondering how these missions go from concept to operations, look elsewhere.
There is very little content wrt the design conceptualization, development, and operations, the political battles, etc etc that the scientists and engineers both at NASA and its contractors surely go through.
The author, instead, just gives us a chronological list of unmanned exploration programs, talks briefly about their science packages, and discusses how various programs get kids from around the world involved and interested. Great [to be read with sarcasm].
In short, very little useful information, not too many good stories, etc.
    A good primer
The book seems like it is written to engage the imagination and enthusiasm of the general public. As such, it contains tidbits of information and anecdotes ranging from philosophy to technology. While, due to the broadness of scope, some topics were inadequately explored, other topics were presented that proved both intriguing and interesting in their own right. A few slip-ups in the writing that might have been caused by the co-authorship or not, enough to pull the 'story' down from a 5 to a 4 as more stringent editing should have eliminated these small blemishes.
This is a broad overview, and serves quite well in that respect. Recommended.
It didn't need to be so long
Whilst the book covers all the interesting missions promised in the title, the authors clearly felt this wasn't enough. For some reason they had to make the book longer and have done so by apparently padding it with many, distracting and long-winded digressions. These range from lengthy explanations of the background science in each story to long essays on the cultural associations of the subjects of the book. In one chapter they even quote at length the lyrics of a rock song that was inspired by the featured galactic phenomenon.

    Title: Decoding the Heavens
    Author: Jo Marchant
    Narrator: Julie Eickhoff
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 36 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-20-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
In Decoding the Heavens, Jo Marchant tells for the first time the full story of the 100-year quest to decipher the ancient Greek computer known as the Antikythera Mechanism. Along the way she unearths a diverse cast of remarkable characters and explores the deep roots of modern technology in ancient Greece and the medieval European and Islamic worlds. At its heart, this is an epic adventure and mystery, a book that challenges our assumptions about technology through the ages.

Very satisfying account of an ancient mystery
The book describes the finding and investigation of one of the most enigmatic ancient artifacts. Many theories have swirled around it (Aliens!) but in 2006 a group of math, astronomy and imaging specialists finally determined the purpose of the existing fragments.
She does a great job of describing the initial find and the first enthusiastic but erroneous interpretations of what the device was. All of the standard academic personalities are here--the Dreamer, the Enthusiastic Amatuer, the Double-crosser, the Possessive Curators, the serendipitous encounters.
I was particularly impressed by how she explained the subtleties of translating irregularities of lunar and solar motion into clockwork. Her descriptions of the actual bronze fragments were less clear, but since they are apparently barely recognizable as gears this is easy to forgive. She also describes future possibilities for investigation since there may have been more to the device than was recovered.
I was less happy with the performance. The reader has a whimsical delivery that the text really doesn't support, but her reading is accurate and easy to understand.
I would recommend this to someone interested in classical Greece and science history in general.

    Title: The Rule of Empires
Subtitle: Those Who Built Them Those Who Endured Them and Why They Always Fall
    Author: Timothy H. Parsons
    Narrator: Thomas Fawley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 25 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-06-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
In The Rule of Empires, Timothy Parsons gives a sweeping account of the evolution of empire from its origins in ancient Rome to its most recent twentieth-century embodiment. He explains what constitutes an empire and offers suggestions about what empires of the past can tell us about our own historical moment. Parsons uses imperial examples that stretch from ancient Rome, to Britain's "new" imperialism in Kenya, to the Third Reich to parse the features common to all empires, their evolutions and self-justifying myths, and the reasons for their inevitable decline.
Parsons argues that far from confirming some sort of Darwinian hierarchy of advanced and primitive societies, conquests were simply the products of a temporary advantage in military technology, wealth, and political will. Beneath the self-justifying rhetoric of benevolent paternalism and cultural superiority lay economic exploitation and the desire for power. Yet imperial ambitions still appear viable in the twenty-first century, Parsons shows, because their defenders and detractors alike employ abstract and romanticized perspectives that fail to grasp the historical reality of subjugation.
Writing from the perspective of the common subject rather than that of the imperial conquerors, Parsons offers a historically grounded cautionary tale rich with accounts of subjugated peoples throwing off the yoke of empire time and time again. In providing an accurate picture of what it is like to live as a subject, The Rule of Empires lays bare the rationalizations of imperial conquerors and their apologists and exposes the true limits of hard power.

    Terrible narration ruins book
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narration in this book is the worst I've heard from Audible. I wish I could get a refund as it makes the book absolutely unlistenable in my opinion. Fawley reads at a snail's pace, with flat monotone, over-enunciated diction and absolutely no emphasis or colour. It is like listening to a text-to-speech computer program, there's so little connection with the text, or sense of pacing or atmosphere. It was bitterly disappointing. I strongly recommend listening to a sample before wasting a credit on it.
    Please Don't Buy This Book!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If this had been written by one of my undergraduates, I would have given it an "F" and handed it back. While there are a variety of problems, I'll point out only a few that are indicative:
    1) Research - the book claims that Constantine the Great made Christianity the religion of the Roman Empire. He did not - he legalized it. This occurred under Theodosius. That's shoddy research and makes most claims in the book suspect.
    2) Logic - Parsons bases his argument on the romanticized view of "empire" in the West (which I think is accurate). However, when discussing the Umayyad Caliphate, he dismisses outright the possibility that modern groups (i.e. Al-Qaeda, ISIS, etc.) do not have a similarly romanticized view of this Caliphate, even while offering quotes that support a romanticized view.

Length: 9 hrs and 13 mins
    Language: English

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 9 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
An engrossing history of the voyages of exploration that ignited curiosity about nature and gave birth to modern science.
When Columbus first returned to Spain from the Caribbean, he dazzled King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella with exotic parrots, tropical flowers, and bits of gold. Inspired by the promise of riches, countless seafarers poured out of the Iberian Peninsula and wider Europe in search of spices, treasure, and land. Many returned with strange tales of the New World.
Curiosity began to percolate through Europe as the New Worlds people, animals, and plants ruptured prior assumptions about the biblical description of creation. The Church, long fearful of challenges to its authority, could no longer suppress the mantra Dare to know! Noblemen began collecting cabinets of curiosities; soon others went from collecting to examining natural objects with fresh eyes. Observation led to experiments; competing conclusions triggered debates. The foundations for the natural sciences were laid as questions became more multifaceted and answers became more complex. Carl Linneaus developed a classification system and sent students around the globe looking for specimens. Museums, botanical gardens, and philosophical societies turned their attention to nature. National governments undertook explorations of the Pacific.
Eminent historian Joyce Appleby vividly recounts the explorers triumphs and mishaps, including Magellans violent death in the Philippines; the miserable trek of the new Argonauts across the Andes on their mission to determine the true shape of the earth; and how two brilliant scientists, Alexander Humboldt and Charles Darwin, traveled to the Americas for evidence to confirm their hypotheses about the earth and its inhabitants. Drawing on detailed eyewitness accounts, Appleby also tells of the turmoil created in the all societies touched by the explorations.
This sweeping, global story imbues the Age of Discovery with fresh meaning, elegantly charting its stimulation of the natural sciences, which ultimately propelled Western Europe toward modernity.

    Well worth listening to
Would you consider the audio edition of Shores of Knowledge to be better than the print version?
No. The print version would be better for names, but audio is easier on the eyes.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Bartolomé de las Casas, the first to revolt against the atrocities of the Spanish conquistadors and do something against it.
What about Joel Richardss performance did you like?
He spoke clearly and pleasantly. However, he did not do too well with foreign names, especially French.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. It is full of interesting material. I may well listen to it again.
    Any additional comments?
I am always grateful for books that put historical events into perspective. This one helped me to understand better the development of the modern world. I could have give it 5 stars, but it did not make me quite as excited as some other books I've listened to, so I somewhat reluctantly reduced it to 4 for the sake of making the distinction. However, I do recommend this book.

Title: The War that Ended Peace
    Author: Margaret MacMillan
    Narrator: Richard Burnip
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 31 hrs and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-17-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
The First World War followed a period of sustained peace in Europe during which people talked with confidence of prosperity, progress and hope. But in 1914, Europe walked into a catastrophic conflict which killed millions of its men, bled its economies dry, shook empires and societies to pieces, and fatally undermined Europe's dominance of the world. It was a war which could have been avoided up to the last moment - so why did it happen?
Beginning in the early nineteenth century, and ending with the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, award-winning historian Margaret MacMillan uncovers the huge political and technological changes, national decisions and - just as important - the small moments of human muddle and weakness that led Europe from peace to disaster. This masterful exploration of how Europe chose its path towards war will change and enrich how we see this defining moment in our history.
Margaret Macmillan is an acclaimed historian and has won the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Duff Cooper Prize and the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for Peacemakers: The Paris Conference of 1919. She is the author of numerous books, and she is the warden of St Anthony's College, Oxford.

    Magisterial Book Read Brilliantly
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. First of all, it's a great book. I took a deep breath earlier this year and plunged headlong into the great coursing centenary stream. Have read five or six books Hastings', Hochschild's, Paxman's, etc. all of them good. But this is the best. It's unfailingly intelligent. It's wonderfully clear. It's brimming with marvelous, telling details. (The best sort of details - illustrative nuggets.) And, yes, it's gripping. And part and parcel of the whole package, so to speak (so to speak indeed), it's beautifully read, performed, not quite sure what the word is. Richard Burnip is a joy to listen to. His voice is clear. He's got great range. He's got authority. And best of all, perhaps, there was nothing show offy about the read. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be: thoughtful, intelligent, clear, nuanced, assured. I thought it was perfectly judged. He does Margaret Macmillan's words justice. What more could you ask? For the record, I didn't find his reading slow. I thought it was timed to perfection. It peered into the book's depths, it brought out nuance. Writing of this calibre has its own cadence. That needs to be respected. Honoured even. This did. This isn't a canter-through book. Everything about it - from subject matter to phrasing - commands one's deepest admiration. And needs to be savoured. The "performance" was absolutely right for the book.
What other book might you compare The War that Ended Peace to, and why?
Any of the one's I've already mentioned. All of them were, well, worthwhile. But this one takes the laurel. Why? Because it was more thoughtful, more measured, more perceptive - ultimately more intelligent. World War I is a huge subject and the book opened up more of it than the others.
