"The risk projections suggest that by now Chernobyl may have caused about 1,000 cases of thyroid cancer and 4,000 cases of other cancers in Europe, representing about 0.01 percent of all incident cancers since the accident. Models predict that by 2065 about 16,000 cases of thyroid cancer and 25,000 cases of other cancers may be expected due to radiation from the accident, whereas several hundred million cancer cases are expected from other causes." (Findings in an article published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2006)
Uranium is best known for the destructive power of the atom bombs, which ushered in the nuclear era at the end of World War II, but given the effectiveness of nuclear power, nuclear power plants were constructed around the developed world during the second half of the 20th century. While nuclear power plants were previously not an option and thus opened the door to new, more efficient, and more affordable forms of energy for domestic consumption, the use of nuclear energy understandably unnerved people living during the Cold War and amid ongoing nuclear detonations. After all, the damage wrought on Hiroshima and Nagasaki made clear to everyone what nuclear energy was capable of inflicting, and the health problems encountered by people exposed to the radiation also demonstrated the horrific side effects that could come with the use of nuclear weapons or the inability to harness the technology properly.
The first major accident at a nuclear power plant took place at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania in 1979, which took nearly 15 years and $1 billion to fully clean up, but Three Mile Island paled in comparison to Chernobyl, which to this day remains the most notorious nuclear accident in history.

zero mention of the cause of the disaster
don't waste your time, not informative. just discussion. of people dealing with the disaster. there are much better options for learning about Chernobyl.
    Almost comical
This being a digest version of the story, my expectations were low. The book does a decent enough job of essentially summarizing Grigori Medvedevs The truth about Chernobyl, adding some accounts of eye witnesses excerpted from Voices from Chernobyl .
What is peculiar is having someone perform the narration with a southern drawl and butchering every name beyond recognition. Example: Sergei sound almost like sergeant. Not to mention how he pronounces the arguably weird names of government bureaucracies, such as Soyuzelektromontazh. Youd think you could get someone whod put in perhaps a little effort to pronounce Russian names correctly, given this happened in the USSR.
    Interesting Story.
The story was interesting but I feel this book was a quick book. Feel like it could of been better in the story to details
Good book - just a little too short
Great book but it feels like it's a summary. There was so much more depth they could have gone into but just didn't. Shame really, but worth the listen

    Publisher's Summary:
"Since it is opportunity which makes not only the thief but also the assassin, such heroic gestures as driving in an open, unarmoured vehicle or walking about the streets unguarded are just damned stupidity, which serves the Fatherland not one whit. That a man as irreplaceable as Heydrich should expose himself to unnecessary danger, I can only condemn as stupid and idiotic." - Hitler
Cloak and dagger adventure, with daring commandos parachuted deep behind enemy lines to kill a sinister mastermind, belongs chiefly to the realm of thriller novels or films. However, World War II stretched over such vast territories and affected so many hundreds of millions of people that nearly every possible human interaction, from the vilest to the noblest, and from the most pedestrian to the exotically adventurous, achieved reality at some point during the conflict. The assassination of Reinhard Heydrich stands out as one of the war's most remarkable secret operations.
"The man with the iron heart," as Adolf Hitler dubbed him, made a fitting target for the dramatic events which unfolded in Prague on May 27, 1942. According to testimony by the historian Michael Freund, "He is one of the greatest criminal figures of the Third Reich. Nowhere in the histories of the Third Reich has [Heydrich] been awarded his rightful place. He is a man of outstanding significance, a criminal mind of Luciferic grandeur." (Dederichs, 2009, 17).

    good but way too short.
this was very intriguing however it was so abbreviated that it was not possible to put yourself into the situation or into the lives of the individuals who were being dealt with.
The narrator is so horribly bad. It ruined it.
I cannot begin to describe how bad the narration is on this. it's as if Mel Blanc , during a World War II Bugs Bunny cartoon, narrated the read.

    Publisher's Summary:
Although a couple of wars were fought on the European continent during the 19th century, an uneasy peace was mostly maintained across the continent for most of the 19th century after Napoleon. Despite this ostensible peace, the Europeans were steadily conducting arms races against each other, particularly Germany and Britain. Britain had been the world's foremost naval power for centuries, but Germany hoped to build its way to naval supremacy. The rest of Europe joined in on the arms race in the decade before the war started.
With Europe anticipating a potential war, all that was missing was a conflagration. That would start in 1908, when Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Balkan Peninsula, drawing it into dispute with Russia. Moreover, this upset neighboring Serbia, which was an independent nation. From 1912-1913, a conflict was fought in the Balkans between the Balkan League and the Ottoman Empire, resulting in the weakening of the Ottoman Turks. After the First Balkan War, a second was fought months later between members of the Balkan League itself.
The final straw came June 28, 1914, when a Serbian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Austria-Hungary immediately issued ultimatums to Serbia, but when they declared war on Serbia July 28, 1914, Russia mobilized for war as well. The Germans mobilized in response to Russia on July 30, and the French, still smarting from the Franco-Prussian War, mobilized for war against Germany. The British also declared war on Germany on August 4. Thus, in the span of one week, six nations had declared war, half of which had no interest in the Balkans.
Though nobody can know for sure, it's altogether possible that World War I would have still broken out even if Franz Ferdinand had not been murdered. Regardless of events in the Balkans, Germany was already bellicose, France and Austria were concerned and involved, Russia was outwardly aggressive but also dealing with internal dissatisfaction, Italy was poised on the brink, and Britain was desperate to remain aloof but committed to its continental allies and a host of smaller countries clamoring for independence. Europe was too explosive to be rescued by any but the best of diplomats, if at all.
The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand: The History and Legacy of the Event That Triggered World War I chronicles the history and legacy of one of the 20th century's most important events.

    Account of History
Good account of history. Details that will help you understand what occurred that contributed to WWI.
Brief, but with enough detail to appreciate its significance.
As with other Charles River Editors publications, "The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand" is a brief, but information packed review of historically relevant events. The book does a nice job of framing the historical and political culture at the time, background into the planning and execution of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and his wife, and the impact it all had leading into World War I. For anyone looking for a good overview of this historically significant event with the desire to dedicate only a small amount of effort and time commitment should consider this book.
    Informative and interesting.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 2011, Egypt quickly became one of the most active countries during the Arab Spring, with Tahrir Square in Cairo becoming the focal point of both violent protests and peaceful political demonstrations. Inspired by the protesters in Tunisia, beginning in January 2011, Egyptians rallied to the square and in the streets by the thousands, marching, protesting, and calling for the fall of then-President Hosni Mubarak. Throughout the next several months until the overthrow of Mubarak in February 2011, millions of protesters from a wide range of socio-economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds demanded a regime change across Egypt.
As significant as it was for the Egyptian people, the Egyptian Arab Spring was a key turning point for the Muslim Brotherhood - Egypt's largest and long-oppressed opposition group. The Brotherhood played a key role in organizing demonstrations, pitting the Egyptian and world media against the Mubarak regime, and orchestrating violent riots and clashes between civilian protesters and the Egyptian security forces, further portraying the regime in a negative light. But it was after the revolution that the Brotherhood truly reaped its rewards; it formed a legal political party and ran in the subsequent parliamentary elections, winning a large number of seats that were previously unavailable to them. Then, in June 2012, the Brotherhood made history in Egypt when it successfully managed to install its candidate Mohamed Morsi as president.
Perhaps no group was more surprised by the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's swift and largely unopposed rise to power than the Brotherhood itself; for decades, the group had suffered a long history of severe oppression and internal crises, but in the political environment created by the Arab Spring, it only took less than two years for the Brotherhood to control the Egyptian government.

Excellent summary of a critical organisation
This brief, conscise overview of the Muslim Brotherhood is timely and informative. The author accomplished an interesting, insightful and revealing narrative that spans a tremendous amount of material. The story starts in Egypt and spreads throughout the globe. The author explores the variety of different philosophical ideas and the different objectives that the Brotherhood adheres to. In addition, the unadorned prose allows the reader to grasp the somewhat confusing and unfamiliar philosophical arguments. I especially respected the balanced and non judgemental manner in which the material was presented.
    Interesting Read
Good historical background for the Muslim Brotherhood. Some apparent bias towards the organization is apparent. No mention of global interactions between the Brotherhood and Germany before, during or after WWII.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Toltec are one of the most famous Mesoamerican groups in South America, but they are also the most controversial and mysterious. The Toltec have been identified as the group that established a strong state centered in Tula (in present-day Mexico), and the Aztec claimed the Toltec as their cultural predecessors, so much so that the word Toltec comes from the Aztec's word Tltcatl, translated as artisan. The Aztec also kept track of the Toltec's history, including keeping a list of important rulers and events, that suggest the peak of the Toltec occurred from about AD 900-1100.
From the moment Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes first found and confronted them, the Aztecs have fascinated the world, and they continue to hold a unique place both culturally and in pop culture. Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as being fierce conquerors of the Valley of Mexico who often engaged in human sacrifice rituals. Ironically, and unlike the Mayans, the Aztecs are not widely viewed or remembered with nuance, in part because their own leader burned extant Aztec writings and rewrote a mythologized history explaining his empire's dominance less than a century before the Spanish arrived.
Thus, even as historians have had to rely on Aztec accounts to trace the history and culture of the Toltec, they have had to deal with the fact that the evidence is fragmentary and incomplete. Given the fact that the Aztec leaders engaged in revisionist history, it becomes even more difficult to be sure that the Aztec accounts of the Toltec are accurate, with some scholars going so far as to call the Toltec culture nothing but myth.

Publisher's Summary:
Africa may have given rise to the first humans, and Egypt probably gave rise to the first great civilizations, which continue to fascinate modern societies across the globe nearly 5,000 years later. From the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Ancient Egyptians produced several wonders of the world, revolutionized architecture and construction, created some of the world's first systems of mathematics and medicine, and established language and art that spread across the known world. With world-famous leaders like King Tut and Cleopatra, it's no wonder that today's world has so many Egyptologists.
Some of the most recognizable images of ancient Egypt, from the mummies to the pyramids, make clear how important religion was to the Egyptians. Unlike modern Western countries, Ancient Egypt was not a secular society but one where religion played a role in even the most mundane daily occurrences, and religion and myth were used to explain how and why the Nile River flooded. It also justified the absolute power of the king, who was considered not only divinely chosen for the role but divine himself. As a result the pharaoh was expected to serve as a sort of intermediary who curried the gods' favor through rituals, sacrifices, offerings, and other practices, even while various cults and temples also sought the same goals and engaged in religious practices.
    Members Reviews:
    Very Poor Narration
This book is presented with an old English Shakespearean style narration which is not consistent with the Ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) language. It felt like I was listening to a dramatic play production at times. The author also appears to be making a subtle attempt to mythologize the spiritual and religious contributions made by these highly advanced ancient African people. From the ancient mysteries system, to the great pyramids, to science, medicine, mathematics, astrology, magic, philosophy, agriculture, religion and spirituality, etc. The whole world remains in awe. And many nations have borrowed or taken fragments of the foundation laid by ancient Africa and claimed them as their own.
    Very basic
Very basic, but good quality. The information did not really differentiate between religion, mythology or practice

    Genres: History, World
    Publisher's Summary:
Following the publication of Jules Verne's novel Around the World in Eighty Days in 1873, Americans had an increasing interest in travel. World travel was becoming even easier with the faster steamships of the day.
In 1888, Nellie Bly, a feisty, investigative reporter for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World newspaper, pitched a story idea of traveling around the world in 75 days to beat the record achieved by Phileas Fogg, the character in Verne's book. While the editor thought it a great idea, he naturally thought the trip should be made by a man. The idea was shelved for over a year.
One day in November 1889, Bly's editor told her the trip against Fogg's time would occur, and she would be the reporter to go - in just two days! She sailed east toward England on 14 November, 1889.
The Cosmopolitan was a rival magazine in New York. Not to be outdone by Pulitizer, the Cosmopolitan editors suddenly decided - seemingly within minutes of Bly's departure - to send their own female reporter, Elizabeth Bisland, on a world trip with the intent to return to New York before Bly. Bisland left that evening on a train going west to San Francisco.
Both reporters wrote detailed accounts of their journeys. For the first time, their writings have been combined in this book so that a consistent timeline is maintained between both women. The listener can feel the urgency and uniqueness of their travels while fully enjoying the similarities and differences in the authors' styles and their experiences.
    Who will win the race?
Elizabeth Cochrane adopted the name of the Stephen Foster song Nelly Bly as her pen name. This famous song is performed in the credits by noted musicians Vivian and Phil Williams and is used with their gracious permission. You can hear more of their music at VoyagerRecords.com.

Thanks be for public domain & ingenuity of editor!
Even if you are uninterested in history or sociology, I'd be willing to bet money that you'll enjoy this!
The original writing was done by Nellie and Elizabeth in 1890. The editor has spliced them together into a coherent whole with dates being the defining factor.
Nellie is a working class young woman who finally gets to take the trip of a lifetime and tries to beat the time of Jules Verne's fictional traveler (See the old movie Around the World in 80 days if you don't want to read the original book) despite objections, delays, and budget by her sneaky newspaper editor. Elizabeth is a more affluent young lady who is coerced into the adventure by her manipulative magazine editor who has attempted to smooth the way and with a far less stringent budget in order to call it a race. Each starts out from New Jersey. Nellie begins her trip by heading to England (where she actually gets to meet Verne and his wife despite going sleepless for 2 nights to do it!). Elizabeth begins by heading west to San Francisco.
Each tells her story from her own perspective and unique personality.
