    Language: English
    Release date: 02-15-12
Publisher: Wisconsin Public Radio (To the Best of Our Knowledge)
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
In this hour, are we alone in the universe? Almost certainly not. For thousands of years, humans have wondered who and what might live beyond the confines of our planet. Now, a generation of out-of-the-box scientists are using everything in the worlds toolbox to develop the new science of astrobiology and bring us to the edge of the biggest breakthrough since Copernicus and Galileo. Science writer Marc Kaufman gives us an overview.
Then, Sara Seager is one of the world's great planet hunters. A planetary scientist and astrophysicist at M.I.T., she's one of the leaders of the hunt for new exoplanets -- planets the orbit stars other than our earth. She's analyzing them for bio-signatures: evidence of life.
Next, are we alone in the universe? Astronomer Dimitar Sasselov is leading the hunt for "super-Earths" -- rocky planets like our own that orbit other stars. He and his colleagues believe it's only a matter of time before they discover a super-Earth that is not only habitable, but home to some form of life. He explains that the search for extraterrestrial life takes to forms: planet hunting, and the creation of the world's first artificial cells.
After that, "Brother Guy" Consolmagno is a Jesuit priest and a planetary scientist at the Vatican Observatory. He grew up in America, got his Ph.D. from M.I.T., then joined the Jesuits. He tells Jim Fleming why he feels his science and his faith complement each other.
Following that, what if we find life on another planet? What will we do next? Science fiction writer Orson Scott Card has thought extensively about the politics and ethics of first contacts. His award-winning classic, Ender's Game lays out a few possibilities. He's just published a new addition to the Ender series. Steve Paulson takes the opportunity to ask him how he'd respond to news of the discovery of an alien civilization. [Broadcast Date: February 15, 2012]

  • To the Best of Our Knowledge: Writing Nature Audiobook by Jim Fleming
Listen to this audiobook free with a 30-day trial. Go to http://hotaudiobook.com/free
Title: To the Best of Our Knowledge: Writing Nature
    Author: Jim Fleming
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-11-11
Publisher: Wisconsin Public Radio (To the Best of Our Knowledge)
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
In this hour, David Gessner wants to change the way people write about nature. Instead of the traditional stories about wild animals in pristine landscapes, he calls for a style of nature writing that's messy, even raucous, and includes an often-overlooked animal: people. He talks with Anne Strainchamps about his book My Green Manifesto, the story of a kayak trip down Boston's charles River with his friend Dan Driscoll.
Then, nature writer Robert Finch gives Steve Paulson an insider's view of the ecosystem of the Cape Cod town of Wellfleet. They walk along the outskirts of Wellfleet, and visit shellfish growers Pat and Barbara Woodbury, who are raking for clams. Finch reads from his collection of essays A Cape Cod Notebook and he reflects on the ways that people have changed the Cape's landscape.
Next, Lauret Savoy believes too many nature writers focus on pristine wilderness and neglect the gritty reality of the places where people actually live - in cities, for instance, maybe even near toxic waste sites. And writing about these places means grappling with difficult questions about race and poverty. Savoy talks with Jim Fleming about her book The Colors of Nature.
And finally, Gary Snyder occupies a unique place in American letters. A Pulitzer prize-winning poet and a friend of the Beat writers, he has carved out a distinct literary voice in poems and essays about Buddhist spirituality and the natural world. Steve Paulson talks with Snyder about what it means to be a Buddhist animist, his Zen training in Japan, the meaning of gratitude, and the importance of exploring "the wild areas of the mind." Snyder also reads two poems. [Broadcast Date: November 11, 2011]
