Today we pay tribute to the late folklorist, author and investigative historian Stetson Kennedy. In the 1940s, Kennedy infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan, passing on information about the group to the FBI and the writers of the Superman radio program. The result was a four episode series in which Superman took on the Klan. Details of actual Klan rituals, code words and secret handshakes were written into the Superman scripts. Soon the Klans mystique was trivialized and membership plummeted. Kennedy went on to write a number of books dealing with human rights and he was Zora Neal Hurstons boss for a while. Stetson Kennedy died on August 27 at age 94. [Broadcast Date: August 31, 2011]

  • Studio 360: Gary Shteyngart & Amanda Palmer Audiobook by Kurt Andersen
Listen to this audiobook free with a 30-day trial. Go to http://hotaudiobook.com/free
Title: Studio 360: Gary Shteyngart & Amanda Palmer
    Author: Kurt Andersen
    Narrator: Kurt Andersen
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 50 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-31-10
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
Gary Shteyngart set his new novel, Super Sad True Love Story, in a dystopian, not-too-distant future where books are passé and social media reigns supreme just like the present, only worse. Shteyngart tells Kurt how the reality of America's decline ended up outpacing his fiction and why love in the face of authoritarian systems is especially romantic.
Next, summer is touring season for musicians, and Studio 360 is asking what they like to listen to on the road. Thao Nguyen, of the band Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, relies on the Zombies song "This Will Be Our Year." It's a tune about starting fresh, and Thao explains that's necessary when living like a nomad. Produced by Michael Raphael.
Then, Amanda Palmer, best known as the front-woman of the punk cabaret band The Dresden Dolls, just released an album of covers where she re-imagines Radiohead's dour electro-rock with cheery ukulele. She performs live in our studio and tells Kurt that the collision between light and dark is where magic really happens.
Finally, when the author John Irving was still a young man, his father disappeared. Irving tells Kurt that absence has informed his fiction ever since: inventing fathers through all his novels. Kurt talked to Irving in 2005 when he'd just published Until I Find You. John Irving's latest book is Last Night in Twisted River. [Broadcast Date: July 31, 2010]

  • Studio 360: Time Travel Audiobook by Kurt Andersen

    Title: Studio 360: Time Travel
    Author: Kurt Andersen
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-02-10
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
Kurt Andersen thinks time travel is the ultimate fantasy. He's made peace with the fact that he probably won't be climbing into a time machine any time soon - because, he explains, he already has. The past isn't nearly as dead as we thought.
Next, Simon Wells (the great-grandson of H.G. Wells) directed the 2002 film adaptation of his ancestor's classic novel, The Time Machine - he explains his design for the time machine. David Goldberg thinks it will actually look more like a spaceship; he and Connie Willis also debate whether a visitor to the past would be able to reshape the future.
Finally, Connie Willis, a winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula awards, admits she was first drawn to time travel out of a desire to go back and fix her own mistakes. Now she loves using it to allow her characters to experience history. She reads from her upcoming novel, Blackout, in which she sends time travelers back to World War II.
