Nuts! SoI eventually went into business to support my family, to be realistic about my career, and try forgetting about the "Story Teller." The schoolhouse, the teacher, and most of the students are gone, but I have not forgotten this Story Teller from long ago. I have made and kept notes about people, places, events, and animals over the years, always secretly hoping I could someday retire and be a Story Teller. I have shared most of my stories with friends, co-workers, employees, and family during all these intervening years, and have thereby polished them sufficiently to receive a knowing smile, some laughter, an agreeing nod, and a few gratifying compliments.

Adventuresome, entertaining and fun!

I've known Vern for nearly 50 years and always admired his adventuresome spirit, the desire to reach out and challenge the norms, and the ability to embrace life fully. I have known about the uniquely full life this family has lead, with all the trials. But, now to be able to read some of the personal stories at the heart of these adventures tells a wonderfully intimate and important aspect of how we need to embrace the simple blessings of life. The read is entertaining and fun!

Real Life adventures can be exciting and fun

Having known the author for nearly 35 years I was surprised I had never heard these remarkable stories firsthand.

Vern's gift for sharing real life experiences that can and do happen to us all makes it an enjoyable detour from the

Like No Memoir You've Ever Read

This extraordinary account of the author's early childhood skirts the edge of the believable and does so beautifully. The list of personal and deeply spiritual illusions/hallucinations/miracles (the choice is up to you) described in the four year span of this book will raise questions which only faith may be able to answer. The author immediately points out that not everyone will buy his account. Nevertheless, he is compelled to share his experiences, many of which will raise the hairs on the back of your neck whether you believe them or not.

Young Patrick, led by voices no one can hear and people who move in strange ways, must come to terms with a world more otherworldly than most sci-fi novels. Each chapter presents new and evolving experiences - ghost ships, strange messages, and events too serendipitous to ignore. Detailed and profound, Illusions By Design is guaranteed to peak the interests of both believers and skeptics alike.

Mind-Boggling & Amazing

This was a very easy read. At only about 100 or so pages, I was able to read it in one sitting. It was very enjoyable. I find it very interesting that the young boys first memories are not until the age of 6 or so. The author does an excellent job of making you feel as though you are there sharing the same experiences as the boy in the book. There were several parts through the reading that had me questioning what was going on and almost life in general if that makes sense. There were events in the book that didn't seem real and then at the same time they did and I was questioning what I had just read and rereading to better understand. I relate well initially because the boys father is an American in the military, and I am an American in the military. The boy seems to almost have powers of sorts, not having to eat or drink and yet he still was comfortable with his being. He believed that even if he was spoken to in Italian, he heard the words being spoken in English. I'd be very curious what ended up happening with the boy as he got older and reading a sequel if there was one...

Spiritual experiences

I really enjoyed this book. Although it's fiction, the writing style makes you feel like it's real. This memoir-style book gives detailed accounts of a boy's spiritual experiences. Each one is very different, and makes you wonder what will happen next. I got hooked early in the book, and had trouble putting it down. It was a very interesting story about spirituality, life, and miracles.

I couldn't put this book down. I read this book from beginning to end in one sitting which is rare for me. It was an easy read for me because it was written in a memoir style.

Amazing!

This book is an inspirational story. The author tells her story in vivid detail and sometimes the images will take your breath away. This is the story of a young woman trapped in a war torn country that must find her way to a safe place. She allows God to guide her on this journey and with his guidance, she makes it to a new life.

A Stirring Lesson of Life Worth Reaching For

Reaching. What does a child reach for when her mother is callously indifferent to even the most basic of her emotional needs? Where does a child reach safety when she has a father who would toss her into a river repeatedly-- simply for the amusement of watching her nearly drown? For some, the abuse ends in childhood. For author Grace Peterson, the psychological pummeling went on. As a social worker I wondered, given a lifetime of repeated experiences of having absolutely no impact whatsoever on her environment, how does this person ever reach a sense of self? Peterson's poetic and yet starkly vivid memoir yanked me into warzone of her life. I ached, and yet, I could not put it down. As a person who has suffered abuse, I was reaching as well. Stretching out from that core of me there was the stalwart belief that yes--the underdog can overcome indeed. I recommend this book for both mental health professionals and for everyone else who wants to learn through Peterson's example how from even the most toxic of environments, the power of reaching out to hope can emerge.

A Riveting Memoir

In rational tones the author takes you on a boat ride into the netherworld of a life coming apart at the seams. Piece by piece the âties that bindâ are broken, so that even in a secure marriage with a man who loves her, she is ripe for the final break. Her childhood years are devoid of love, and at times frightening. Her only solace is in the outdoors, along a river and in the gardens of a relative. She is reaching â reaching always for connection, reaching through the night for the light. The only good friend she has, when she is a teenager, dies in a tragic accident.
