  • Teacher Man Audiobook by Frank McCourt

    Title: Teacher Man
    Author: Frank McCourt
    Narrator: Frank McCourt
    Format: Abridged
Length: 5 hrs and 24 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-04-13
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A third memoir from the author of the huge international best sellers Angelas Ashes and Tis.
In Teacher Man, Frank McCourt reads his own account of his illustrious, amusing, and sometimes rather bumpy long years as an English teacher in the public high schools of New York City.
Frank McCourt arrived in New York as a young, impoverished and idealistic Irish boy - but who crucially had an American passport, having been born in Brooklyn. He didn't know what he wanted except to stop being hungry and to better himself. On the subway he watched students carrying books. He saw how they read and underlined and wrote things in the margin and he liked the look of this very much. He joined the New York Public Library and every night when he came back from his hotel work he would sit up reading the great novels.
Building his confidence and his determination, he talked his way into NYU and gained a literature degree and so began a teaching career that was to last 30 years, working in New York's public high schools. Frank estimates that he probably taught 12,000 children during this time and it is on this relationship between teacher and student that he reflects in Teacher Man, the third in his series of memoirs.
The New York high school is a restless, noisy and unpredictable place and Frank believes that it was his attempts to control and cajole these thousands of children into learning and achieving something for themselves that turned him into a writer. At least once a day someone would put up their hand and shout 'Mr. McCourt, Mr. McCourt, tell us about Ireland, tell us about how poor you were.' Through sharing his own life with these kids he learnt the power of narrative storytelling, and out of the invaluable experience of holding 12,000 people's attention came Angela's Ashes.
Frank McCourt was a legend in such schools as Stuyvesant high school - long before he became the figure he is now he would receive letters from former students telling him how much his teaching influenced and inspired them - and now in Teacher Man he will share his reminiscences of those 30 years as well as revealing how they led to his own success with Angela's Ashes and 'Tis.
    Critic Reviews:
    Praise for Angelas Ashes:
An astonishing book completely mesmerising you can open it almost at random and find writing to make you gasp. (Independent)
Brilliant and seductive. (Thomas Keneally, author of Schindlers List)
The most remarkable thing about Frank McCourt, apart from his survival, is his lack of sorrowfulness. Angelas Ashes sings with irreverent Limerick wit. It makes you smile at the triumph of the storyteller. (The Times)
Writing in prose thats pictorial and tactile, lyrical but streetwise, Mr McCourt does for the town of Limerick what the young Joyce did for Dublin: he conjures the place for us with such intimacy that we feel weve walked its streets and crawled its pubs. (New York Times)
    Praise for Tis:
Tis is a work of great charm and power, perhaps even more so than its predecessor. (Mail on Sunday)
Few will be able to resist this pacey and fluent sequelMcCourts gift lies not simply in having lived through interesting times, but in having developed his skills as an editor and narrator to produce two fine, funny and moving slices of a past that is not simply Irelands, but everyones. (Guardian)

  • Mr. Gig Audiobook by Nige Tassell

    Title: Mr. Gig
    Author: Nige Tassell
    Narrator: Ben Elliot
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-28-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Roadie. DJ. Promoter. Reviewer. Punter. Nige Tassells adult life has been defined by live music. Its the fabric of his being, his bloodline, his DNA. He is Mr Gig or at least he was. A few years ago, Mr Gig hung up his backstage pass and headed off to raise children in rural isolation. Now, with house renovated and kids domesticated, he turns back to face the music and barely recognises his former love: the astronomical ticket prices; the sea of mobile phones obscuring the view; the once-iconic venues selling naming rights to drinks companies.
On a mission to rekindle his passion for live music, Nige embarks on a round-Britain trip from super-sized arena shows to microscopic folk festivals, from blacker-than-black death metal gatherings to brightly coloured 80s pop revivals in an attempt to get his groove back. Along the way, he finds himself the recipient of a Michael Eavis practical joke, scoffs his way through Elbows backstage banquet, endures a near-death experience en route to a festival on a remote Hebridean island, and even goes gladioli shopping with a Smiths tribute band. Will Nige fall back in love with live music? Can he make peace with middle age? And will he ever again be able to rightfully call himself Mr Gig?
Nige Tassell is a freelance music journalist whose work has appeared in The Word, Q, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, New Statesman and Paste. He has also presented music documentaries for BBC Radio 4. His journalistic highlights include scoffing cake in the Test Match Special commentary box, interviewing Boy George while pushing his son around the aisles of Morrisons and being (surely!) the only person ever to travel to The Ivy by National Express coach.
    Critic Reviews:
"Mr Gig is a sweet and tender paean to a very particular lost love, the live gig, and a wise and witty account of how one man set about rekindling that youthful romance" (Stuart Maconie, radio DJ, author and TV presenter)
"Written with enthusiasm and nostalgic curiosity, Mr Gig is an affectionate celebration of live music in all its forms" (James Fearnley from The Pogues)
"Mr Gig perfectly captures what its like to become a hopeless live music addict: the anticipation, the expense, the social ineptitude, the adrenalin and the utter, unexplainable elation of it all" (Steve Lamacq, DJ)
    Members Reviews:
    Entertaining, amusing, educational, and inspiring
What made the experience of listening to Mr. Gig the most enjoyable?
Being exactly the same age as the author and sharing a similar trajectory through the Music Industry - I knew I'd either love or hate this. The handful of rave reviews convinced me to take a punt and I'm grateful that they did.
What did you like best about this story?
Where do you start? It was perfect from beginning to end, reader is excellent (on the strength of this, one of my new favourites), the story hooks you in with an original premise and then takes you on a 7 hr 'blue Honda Civic' powered, odyssey through the UK's contemporary live music scene(s). I have quite an extensive audio book collection, many of them I have to admit, I've only got part way through.

    Any additional comments?
Brilliant.... What better way to sell more of your product or get more people to sign up to be a distributor than to have a book written about your story. This book is nothing but an ad for the guy's business. I was able to listen to the whole book at one sitting. There are a few tidbits of good information...basic information about advertising and marketing. The audio quality is tough. You can here the narrator banging on the table..... several times. Again, this is just a 2+ hour ad for the business.....
