    Excellent introduction to George Washington
Good book on one of the most fascinating characters in human history. But be warned: it casts Washington in a positive light and dares to suggest that he was actually a great man. Some modern readers would be disappointed with the lack of sordid details about his personal life, but if you want a good overview of his life, give this one a shot. Recommended.

    Publisher's Summary:
Svetlana Grimm has recently discovered she's a vampire. The clues are all there: she can eat only red foods, has to sleep under the bed because of her heightened sensitivity to light and noise, and can read others' thoughts.
But this new discovery is making her transition from home-schooling to attending sixth grade at Sunny Hill Middle School that much more difficult. After all, what can she possibly have in common with those jellybean-eaters in her class? She prefers to watch them from afar in her hidden lair atop the Oak of Doom in her backyard.
But things get more interesting when Svetlana's cruel yet beautiful science teacher, Ms. Larch, reads her thoughts. Svetlana is excited to have found another of her kind - until her new neighbor, The Bone Lady, fills her in on Ms. Larch's true identity and her own. What happens when your sixth-grade science teacher might also be your immortal enemy?

Your Vampire is Funnier if She's Home-Schooled
Self-named and self-proclaimed, Svetlana Grimm is a charming and clever girl who believes she is a vampire. Consequently, she can only eat red things...or white, because white is neutral. What makes Lewis Harris' "A Taste for Red" stand out is that the funny parts come out of Svetlans's compulsions and idiosyncrasies, rather than merely out of snarkiness. The story begins on Svetlana's first day in public school after having been home-schooled her entire life. At first, it's hard to tell if she really is a vampire or if her behavior is a result of her insecurities about being at school - either way...VERY FUNNY. Her superior intelligence, a result of the home-schooling shows in her everyday observations, such as when her father wipes his brow (glandular problems). This is a wonderful book for young readers, featuring a funny, inquisitive, and ultimately courageous girl.
Quirky, different... but just didn't deliver a punch.
Svetlana Grimm is a vampire... or... at least she thinks she is. She can't sleep anywhere but under her bed, she can read people's thoughts and only red foods satisfy her hungers. Certainly these are all signs that she's become a vampire.
Starting the sixth grade at Sunny Hill Middle School after being homeschooled would be a big enough transition without her new status. But when Svetlana's new science teacher, Ms. Larch, shows signs of being a fellow vampire she may have to question everything she thinks she knows about their kind. Especially when it becomes apparent that Ms. Larch doesn't have the nicest intentions.
Conceptually this story sounded like a lot of fun. Kids in this age group who are looking for a vampire read will likely find this one an okay read. There's mystery, humor and vivid characters to keep them entertained. A girl with a snarky attitude and a penchant for quirky things should certainly appeal to the targeted age group. What didn't work for me (as a parent reading it) was that Svetlana isn't really snarky... after a point she's just plainly disrespectful and bratty to her parents and peers. The only niceness I really saw was with her neighbor, Ms. Bones.

Good for a short car trip to PA
We listened to this short primer on the early history of Pennsylvania on our way from Maryland to Pennsylvania for vacation. It helped get us in the proper mindset to appreciate the state's history since we also planned to hit a few historical sites.
The audiobook is aimed at an general all ages group so it just covers the basics but isn't dumbed down. I also liked the narrator's deep rich voice and the story left us wanting a bit more.

    Publisher's Summary:
Morris Gleitzman's brilliant comic style has endeared him to adults and children alike and made him one of Australia's favorite authors.
Bumface! That's who Angus wants to be. He dreams of being bold, brave, wild and free. Like the pirate in the stories he tells his younger brother and sister.
Instead, Angus is just plain tired from changing nappies and wiping food off walls. His mum calls him Mr. Dependable, but Angus can barely cope. Another baby would be a disaster. So Angus comes up with a bold and brave plan to stop her getting pregnant.
That's when he meets Rindi And Angus thought he had a problem before...
    Editorial Reviews:
Angus Solomon, 12, aches to be a fearless and free pirate like Bumface, hero of stories he tells his younger brother and sister. But he cant. He has to mind them while his mother is busy being a famous television mom. His father and stepfathers have other kids, too. Its a sad situation turned kooky when Angus also chases after a part in the school play, plots to keep his mom from getting pregnant again, and struggles to keep a new friend, Rindi, from an arranged marriage with a much older man in India. Morris Gleitzman, notably honored for his books for kids, as well as his internationally acclaimed novel, Two Weeks with the Queen, delightfully performs his own work.

    All time favorite YA book!
All you have to do is listen to the first paragraph of this audio book and you'll be cracking up! It runs the emotional gambit from hilarious to poignant, and back again. You'll love the innocent, often overwhelmed young protagonist. Narrated by the author who is an amazing voice actor and writer.

A good one for your class or school library!
I'm writing this review as an ESL secondary school teacher in Hong Kong. It is not easy to find "real" English books which can interest our local secondary students here but at the same time written in simple enough English. Therefore, I think this book is a rare find. Even though not all the stories are equally fun to read, most of them are and they are all very imaginative.
My favourite story in this book is "The Hat". It really touches my heart. It is a more serious story in this book and it may not be the favourite of many teenage readers, but from a teacher's point of view, I think there are a lot of interesting issues and features that can be dealt with in class with my students.
If you've never read Paul Jennings' stories before, you can visit British Council's BritLit website. You'll find at least two of his stories there with some teaching ideas provided. You can get a feel for the kind of stories he writes before deciding whether to purchase this book or his other books for your class and school libraries.
    Tongue-Tied!
"Tongue Tied" is Paul Jennings tenth (more or less) collection of eight short stories for kids, published in 2002. I don't know why it's called "Tongue Tied". Most of the books in the series are called "Un" something, like "Uncanny!", "Unreal!" and "Unseen!". Is it that Paul ran out of "Un" words? It could have been "Unspoken!" "Untouched!", "Unused!" "Unnamed!" even. Ah well. They're fun for all ages, and I've been a fan of his since I was a kid. This one was a bit of a mixed bag though.
"Tongue-Tied", the title story, is my favorite, and features a boy who wants a kiss and a girl who wants a fish. It's a cute one...
"Lennie Lighthouse" is about a boy who has glowing teeth, and features a bit of storytelling in Melbourne, which is always nice.
"Sniffex" is a sequel to the story "Ex-Poser" (from 1991's "Unmentionable"), and has Boffin hunting down the "Phantom Farter" of his class at school, using a special formula called Sniffex...
"The Hat" is set in Queensland, and has a whole bunch of Australian wildlife, and deals a lot with death. Bit flat, I thought.
"Spot the Dog" has an illustration where you, and the character in the story, get to spot the dog. Bit flat too...
    "Hailstone Bugs" is interesting.
