Would you consider the audio edition of The Gospel of the Twin to be better than the print version?

The narrator gave life to the insightful message this book was intended to portray. That integral message could not have been achieved without the audio version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jesus because he found insight in the most dire of circumstances. His enigmatic thinking gave great purpose to this book.

What does Charles Henderson Norman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He did a great job! His voice brought the story alive.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I loved it! I wish it could have been longer. The message was invaluable.

Muddled and Outdated

The first thing you need to know about this book is that it's from 2008. That was the same year Tim Keller published his first major book, Barack Obama began his first presidency, and Lecrae released Rebel. In other words, it's ancient history in the brief life of the emergent church. Many of the superstar evangelical leaders critiqued in this book have since faded into obscurity, and newer currents within the emergent church obviously aren't addressed. Some of the names DeYoung and Kluck drop in passing in association with the emergent church are perplexing, and many of the jokey jabs they take at emergent Christians feel like the jokes the Babylon Bee currently makes about young Reformed Christians; a demonstration, perhaps, that some of the impulses that drive young Christians to the emergent movement can be and are being more constructively redirected.

The second thing you need to know is that, although the premise is that DeYoung and Kluck should be emergent based on their personal background, DeYoung in particular doesnt seem like hes actually attracted by emergent theology at all. In fact, DeYoung is something of a doctrinal hardliner even when compared to other members of The Gospel Coalition, and perhaps most famous now for his seeming belief that refusing to watch Game of Thrones is a fruit of the spirit. So, when it comes to addressing some (in my opinion, legitimate) critiques of traditional evangelical theology and culture, DeYoung brushes them aside. Do evangelicals overemphasize the Atonement and underemphasize (or ignore) Jesus teaching of salvation as a kingdom? DeYoung acknowledges as much, but it doesnt seem to bother him. Not nearly as much as the emergent practice of denying the atonement and waffling about Hell does. Similarly, Kluck spends must of his section mocking the emergent obsession with cultural relevancy, and often misreads a desire to be involved and conscientious as a Christian in the secular world as pointless "dialoging." Does Kluck really relate to the desire of young Christians to approach their own calling seriously? It sometimes doesn't seem like it.

The final thing you need to know is that DeYoung and Kluck focus almost exclusively on the weird fringes of the emergent church and then infer guilt by association.

Owen Strachan does us all a great service by bringing Chuck Colson's life and legacy alive for today's Christians. Colson lived as a man redeemed, and he brought that gospel of redemption and renewal to prisoners and the world at large. Colson not only witnessed to the gospel's transformative power through his own story, but he provided a robust intellectual defense of that same gospel and the worldview principles it engenders. Strachan brings the man's life together with his ideas to provide an accessible and compelling account of his work in this world.

An Excellent Account of the Life of Chuck Colson

Strachan paints the picture of a man who was sold out to the gospel that saved him from himself and dedicated to proclaiming it to the broken world that he knew all too well. He uses the accomplishments of this hero of the faith to stir evangelicals to action in the public square, confronting the world in the most loving way possible by speaking the truth that it desperately needs to hear. The last thing the Church needs to be in the cultural conversation is silent, and even if we do not see it prevail as we would have it, we will still hold to it, knowing that there is a final victory in the kingdom that is not of this world.

Colson Explained for the Next Generation

Numerous personal friends have been deeply impacted by the work and life of this unique man. Until reading this book I was left scratching my head wondering, "what's the big deal?" Strachan does a wonderful job of explaining what drove this complex man. The narrative of redemptive mission is especially poignant throughout the book. I also found many of lessons that the author pulls out for today's evangelicals meaningful and timely. I have already recommended this book and I will continue to do so.
