Very Disappointing

Overwritten, overly boring. I cannot imagine how a Pulitzer Prize-winning author could write such an uninteresting memoir. It is, and by far, the worst memoir I have ever read. I only wish I had heeded the poor reviews on Amazon.com before wasting my monthly credit on this one.

Conroy shares his storytelling

This is one of Conroy's best works. My Reading Life breaks down Conroy's writing background and tells how his mentors had an inpact on him. Conroy tells much about what he felt about his many experiences reflected in his books. He also goes into wonderful detail about a great mentor, Gene Norris.

Some sparkles

Mr. Conroy provides some moments that sparkle; most enjoyable were his moments of humor and honesty. I found the review of Gone with the Wind too lengthly. At the end he seemed to get caught in a net of melancholy metaphors; but overall I thank him for the insights. His voice told the story best.

What a Storyteller!

I became interested in the book after hearing Pat Conroy speak about it online somewhere. I really enjoyed this audiobook. I will never forget his story about his mom reading Gone With The Wind to him for the first time when he was 5, and how she made it come alive.

He's a dynamic person and a terrific storyteller, and I'm glad he narrated his stories himself. What a life! What passion for the books he's read and the people who have taught him! I still occasionally "flip through" this audiobook if I'm running around town and need something satisfying to listen to. Very satisfying.

Simply Outstanding - Loved It, Over and Over Again

I have heard more than 240 books on Audible. Right now, this is my favorite.

This short, but rich and honest book is full with content. If you have ever wondered what inspires a modern writer to write than this is the book for you. By its end, you may want to be a writer or be a better writer.

This book should be required reading for all English students, lovers of literature, teachers, and parents. Yesteachers and parentsbecause as Conroy beautifully explains, it is because of these peoplebecause of the actions they took to enrich his reading lifethat he is one of today's best storytellers. And why he is with us still (listen to the book to learn more).

And if you love rare book stores, then youll enjoy chapter six. But it is after chapter 12 that youll want to read War and Peace.

nothing new here

Wish I'd known this book was over 30 years ago. I was truly not surprised by anything, except the fact that her husband clubbed a dog to death for barking. Just lost any respect for a man who is questionable in his treatment of his wife, people, and now animals. Uggghhh, disgusted.

Such an uplifting, inspiring book based on the life and career of the great Loretta lynn. Sissy spacek makes the book even more interesting due to her sounding very familiar to Loretta. Worth the listen or even a read great book!!!

A rare insight into a rock legend

This is the finest audible book I've listened to. The narrators (Depp and Hurley) although diametrically opposed in terms of vocal style, both add so much to the listening experience. This is an experience not to be missed. Imagine yourself sitting with Keith in front of a roaring fire in the middle of winter and Keith is reminiscing about the many milestones in his professional and personal life.

The Audible novel puts you there.. seriously. On top of everything else, Keith shares his techniques, guitar tunings, and songwriting methods with ease. As an amateur guitarist, I have learned more about the instrument and various tuning methods (specifically Open G) in a week of listening to the book than I have in over 30 years of trying to teach myself.

In this book, Keith openly discusses his drug habits, but always counsels the listener to stay away from drugs. This is no mean feat.... the book is full of stories of what happened under the influence of Heroin, cocaine, marijuana and various other uppers and downers, but amazingly you come away from the experience with some understanding of why Keith (and others) would subject themselves to the problems that this lifestyle introduces, without the feeling that Keith is in any way endorsing this lifestyle.

I have to say, prior to the book, my impression of Keith Richards was that of an aging rock star who should have quit long ago in his prime.

Very Touching

Wonderful Book. Very calm study by Rob Chapman. Giving due respect to Syd Barrett and his family. Simon Vance is a pleasure as always.

Syd is an interesting character but a genius?

Where does A Very Irregular Head rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This was a fairly easy listen and ranks somewhere in the middle.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Chapman spends a great deal of time fleshing out Syd's background and youth growing up in Cambridge. It is interesting to learn about the formation of Pink Floyd and his career in the aftermath of his madness. Chapman is evidently a huge fan and spends a bit too much time comparing Syd to great artists like Robert Rauschenberg and authors like Charles Dodgson. Syd wrote a few cool pop tunes but nothing as iconic as "Alice in Wonderland".

What about Simon Vances performance did you like?

Wonderfully read and paced. Simon Vance is a joy to listen to.

Good stuff!

A great glimpse into American history, as Twain tells his own really interesting story (who knew it was so rich?). I'm not a big history buff, but Twain can tell a story and he's got lots of them, which makes fun! The narrator is really good as well - pleasure to listen to.

Like spending an evening with Sam himself

I am looking forward to reading the new complete and authorised version appearing on the 100th anniversary of Twain's death, but I couldn't resist listening to this "self-censored" version read with such skill by Bronson Pinchot. Twain's humor is legendary, but here we get a close look at his tender side as well, as he writes about his family. The quotes from his daughter Suzy's childhood biography of her father add special depth and the narrator does an excellent job of communicating how Twain must have felt as he revisited her writings years after her death. The details of his travels, daily life and professional and political considerations are so lively it's hard to believe that he is describing events that took place more than a century ago. Pinchot is wonderfully present too.

Fabulous Performance AND Read

I have to admit I was a tad put off that "Cousin Balky" was the narrator, until I began to listen, and without exaggeration, this has to be about the best, most consistent long-term performance I've ever heard. This is probably as close as currently possible to actually sit down in Samuel Clemens' presence and hear him humorously relate hitherto unknown details of his life. Pinchot is that good in his reading. Remarkable feat. The southern-fried accent is never overdone, but more growled and grumbled in a lovable singularity (you can almost smell the cigar smoke). Mark Twain's material is wonderful, as always, but Bronson Pinchot's performance is what both seals and steals this production as an Audible.com classic (and it should win many awards). Heart-breaking in parts, laugh-out-funny in many parts (and that's not the usual review hyperbole), and always historically engrossing, I highly recommend "Chapters from My Autobiography" (and keep your eyes, especially ears, on Bronson Pinchot).

Get this and get it now.

Crosley is fantastic in her second book. You can tell she has matured some since I Was Told There'd be Cake. The writing in this book is a better and a bit more personal. Not all the stories/Essays are as hilarious as her first book, however I feel that How Did You Get This Number stands up well as a follow up book.

Just blah

It's mostly New York cliche problems.

The writing is good, but I don't feel like I got anything out of it. There are a couple about non-new York issues but they didn't do anything for me. I like to take something away from essays. This was just a long winded monologue that I felt like was a waste of my time. If I lived in New York maybe I would feel differently.

Compelling listening most of the way...

Great narrative with insights regarding Roth, fiction and autobiography, New York Jews and gentiles and Roth's characterisation of them. I liked the references to characters in novels and links to Roth's personal story. Surprisingly little on some periods and if and how they affected Roth - McCarthyism, Vietnam War and the anti-war movement and more. Interesting even if only some of Roth's voluminous output has been read. However... the beginning for some reason was more engaging than the latter half. Nevertheless well worth a read 'n listen.

One good story, but mostly ho hum.....

Overall, I can't really recommend this book. I found only a couple of the stories really interesting. My favorite was the story of the sand hogs and New York's water storage system. For the most part you can hear more interesting stories on weekly TV news magazines, such as 60 Minutes. The rather dull narration hurt the book and the lack of distinct pauses, breaks or lead-in's between stories was also annoying. If I had it to do over, I'm not sure I'd buy this book. The premise was promising, but the author didn't really deliver as promised. Sherlock Holmes was much more exciting than this guy.

A box of nonfiction candy

This is one you can dip into whenever you feel like it and enjoy it. Strong narration.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I awaited each new chapter wondering what the next topic was going to be. The narrator did an excellent job. I was sad when it ended.

Great stories... But rather random

I thought this book would connect Sherlock a lot more, though it is well written, and the stories are captivating. I think the title should include " short stories of..."

Interesting style

Thoroughly enjoyed this compendium of short stories. Some, I enjoyed more than others. Just a bit disappointed that there wasn't more on the Sherlock Holmes note. Sometimes the role of Holmes in the big picture could be confusing. All the same, I think I liked this piece because it is so different. Learned a lot. I like Grann's literary style.
